Ogloblin, University year-mates and life-time friends. Since their graduation in 1961 from the Indonesian philology department, Oriental Faculty of St.Petersburg State University, these two powerful characters have dominated St. Petrsburg Indonesian studies. They have shared with their numerous followers and colleagues their brilliant knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia, deep understanding of traditional and modern life of Nusantara and in the best traditions of hereditary St.Petersburg intelligencia. The present collection of papers resulted from a conference in honor of these, our teachers, mounted by their ex-students and colleagues in 2004. We caught our teachers at surprise, knowing their modest ways and opposition to any kind of celebrations in their honor. This is the reason why there are papers by jubilars in this volume.
After a long preparation period this collection of papers finally appears just before the 70-year birth anniversaries of Elena V. Revunenkova and Alexander K. Ogloblin.
The present book starts the new series of publications named «Maclayevsky Sbornik» for papers and monographs on Insular Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific.
The book will be of interest for anthropologists, philologists, linguists, historians and the general reader, interested in traditional and modern culture and languages of Southeast Asia and beyond.

"The present collection of papers is dedicated to a prominent linguist Dr. Gennadiy E. Rachkov, t... more "The present collection of papers is dedicated to a prominent linguist Dr. Gennadiy E. Rachkov, the founder and the head of Tagalog Philology Department (since 1967) in the School of Asian and African Studies of St. Petersburg State University. The book contains the writings of experts in folklore, literature, history, linguistics, anthropology and Russian art related to the Philippines, as well as bibliographies, lists of ethnographic collections and other data on sources for Philippine materials in St. Petersburg.
The two goals of the publication are to give tribute to our teacher and colleague Dr. Rachkov and to present a comprehensive picture of the history and the present state of Philippine studies in St. Petersburg. Papers written by our colleagues from the Philippines, as well as from Moscow, UK and USA, with whom we have long-time scholarly ties, are included.
The present book is the forth issue of the series of publications «Maklayevsky Sbornik» (‘Maclay Publications’) for papers and monographs on Insular Southeast Asia, Australia and the Pacific.

The paper deals with the role of the dog in everyday life, past and present, as well as in Philip... more The paper deals with the role of the dog in everyday life, past and present, as well as in Philippine folk beliefs, ritual and mythology. There is a particular emphasis of its importance as a hunting companion of old, and as one of the main agents in the creation of the present-day world, of human beings in general and of certain ethnic groups in particular. We start with a short overview of the history of the dog and its perception through the lens of language.

В публикации представлен краткий обзор трех конференций, проведенных Отделом Австралии, Океании и... more В публикации представлен краткий обзор трех конференций, проведенных Отделом Австралии, Океании и Индонезии Музея этнологии и антропологии им. Петра Великого (Кунсткамеры) РАН в 2021-2023 гг.: Маклаевских чтений-2021 и 2022 и секции по этноботанике в музее на Радловских чтениях-2023. Ведущим направлением отдела является полевая работа в странах Юго-Восточной Азии и Океании. Ограничения на передвижение, связанные с пандемией Covid-19, сократили количество экспедиций в эти годы. Главной в тематике конференций 2022-2023 стала этноботаника, которая и раньше была одной из основных тем наших исследований. Прозвучали доклады по другим аспектам исследования традиционной и современной культуры юга Азии и Океании, языков австронезийско-австроазиатского ареала.
The paper presents a brief overview of three conferences
organized by the Department of Australia, Oceania and Indonesia
of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera)
of the RAS, St. Petersburg, in 2021–2023, Maclay Readings 2021
and 2022 and a panel on ethnobotany at the Radlov Readings 2023.
Fieldwork in the countries of Southeast Asia and Oceania is the
main focus of our Department. However, since Covid restrictions
reduced our possibilities for travel during that period, ethnobotany,
another topic traditional for our studies, was chosen as the
main theme of the conference. Also, a number of papers dealt with
the history, art, traditional and modern culture of the South of Asia
and Oceania, as well as Austronesian and Austroasiatic languages.

В культуре народов Лусона присутствуют все составляющие этого комплекса. По местоположению и назначению мегалиты данного региона можно разделить на три группы.

The most ancient genres of oral literature date back to the time when one ritual specialist perfo... more The most ancient genres of oral literature date back to the time when one ritual specialist performed the functions of epic singer, shaman, and priest. Once studied in Siberia and Central Asia, these ancient forms are better preserved nowadays in insular Southeast Asia (Stanyukovich forthcoming). The Ifugao hudhud oral tradition, which I have been studying for the last two decades, is the core of ritual and ideology among highlanders of Northern Luzon, Philippines. The Ifugao are wet-rice cultivators who until the early twentieth century practiced headhunting, preserving their traditional society with no political and very loose territorial organization. The hudhud meets all the standards typical of heroic epic patterns, including plot structure and formulaic style (Stanyukovich 1983). At the same time it is a highly archaic combination of heroic epics and shamanistic narratives. The folklore of the Cordillera of Northern Luzon is abundant in variations of the ‘lonely/low her... more The folklore of the Cordillera of Northern Luzon is abundant in variations of the ‘lonely/low hero’ – a personage depicted initially as a pitiful, isolated, friendless, sad orphan or foundling, but who appears to prove himself to be a powerful representative of a high-ranking family as the story unwinds. We find those personages in different genres: ritual myths, epics, charms, curses and tales. Betel chewing as a cultural practice is of great importance in the depiction of key mythological figures, lonely heroes in particular. Red saliva, produced in abundance while chewing, is equated to semen and blood, and associated with fertility, life, death and immortality. Betel nut plays a crucial role in motifs of magic birth (conception by betel-chewing) and in defining the kinship ties of a lonely hero. The dog followed Homo sapiens on his journey from the tropics to the Polar zone. Interaction, coo... more The dog followed Homo sapiens on his journey from the tropics to the Polar zone. Interaction, cooperation, and personal relationships of humans and dogs — as with a cow or horse — were combined with dog meat consumption. Food prohibitions are always a way to structure the world, often framed as religious regulations. Dog meat was largely banned in Europe and the Near East by the Abrahamic religions and was stigmatised. The forbidden practice became, in turn, a point of colonial discourse, contrasting “civilized” nations to “savages”. In Asia-Pacific, Southeast Asia, China, and Korea, dog meat is still used. However, it is considered shameful and attributed exclusively to indigenous ethnic groups. Dog meat is endowed with medicinal properties, often seen as “male” food and an aphrodisiac. The only country that openly fought for the legitimization of dog eating was South Korea. There, it was seen as a tradition and part of national identity. However, even there, the pressure of Westernization and the influence of champions of animal rights is so strong that the battle is probably lost. Dog meat consumption moves into a grey zone. This paper looks into the aforementioned issues, using the author’s materials collected in the course of anthropological fieldwork in Southeast Asia, primarily the Philippines from 1995 to 2020 and in Cambodia in 2015, 2017. Правда ли, что ранняя литература строилась на доиспанских эпических сказаниях архипелага? Если нет, то откуда возникла идея преемственности и почему удерживается?
Актуальность темы обусловлена необходимостью исправить повторяющиеся ошибки в трактовке роли филиппинского эпоса в формировании книжной словесности. Постулат о существовании древних литературных записей на архипелаге, как показал А. Окампо, восходит к романтическому допущению Хосе Рисаля. Письменная литература возникла на Филиппинах во времена колонизации в среде, ориентированной на христианские ценности и испанскую
культуру. Решающую роль в ее развитии играли заимствованные образцы – церковные и светские литературные жанры европейского происхождения.
Возведение филиппинской литературной традиции к местному древнему эпическому наследию – некритическая экстраполяция европейской модели, возникшая в период романтизма и поддерживаемая идеологией национализма. Европейская литературная традиция формировалась на основе античной,
европейского эпоса и христианства. Филиппинская же литература вплоть до нового времени исключала собственные источники как языческие, сохраняя лишь элементы их поэтической формы. Наличие устной эпической традиции у равнинных народов Филиппин сомнения не вызывает, однако она была утрачена в процессе христианизации, не сохранилось ни одного текста на языке
оригинала. Российские работы по истории филиппинской литературы также возводят истоки филиппинской литературы к местному эпосу, повторяют утверждения о существовании древних манускриптов на пальмовых листах; нет ясного понимания того, что филиппинская эпика – устная, а не письменная традиция, что ее первые записи появились совсем недавно. В статье использованы полевые материалы автора (1995–2020), работающего с эпическими
сказителями разных районов архипелага с целью записи живого исполнения эпоса, его текстуализации и выявления его прагматики – обрядовых связей и меняющихся функций в социуме.

The paper presents a brief review of the work of the Department of Australia, Oceania and Indones... more The paper presents a brief review of the work of the Department of Australia, Oceania and Indonesia of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the RAS, St. Petersburg, during recent years in the context of the history and current state of Russian studies of the Southern Seas countries and the cultures and languages of Austronesian and Austro-Asiatic peoples of Southeast Asia and Oceania. The authors describe the major directions of this work, including fundamental and field studies in anthropology, ethnography and folklore, as well as publishing and exhibiting activities related to the jubilee year of Nikolai N. Miklouho-Maclay (2021). The article contains a review of the conference “Maclay Readings” that was held at the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) on November 11 and 13, 2020, and was dedicated to the memory of Alexander K. Ogloblin (1939–2020), an outstanding scholar and teacher of many modern Russian specialists in Indonesian and Malaysian Studies.

В культуре народов Лусона присутствуют все составляющие этого комплекса. По местоположению и назначению мегалиты данного региона можно разделить на три группы.

The most ancient genres of oral literature date back to the time when one ritual specialist perfo... more The most ancient genres of oral literature date back to the time when one ritual specialist performed the functions of epic singer, shaman, and priest. Once studied in Siberia and Central Asia, these ancient forms are better preserved nowadays in insular Southeast Asia (Stanyukovich forthcoming). The Ifugao hudhud oral tradition, which I have been studying for the last two decades, is the core of ritual and ideology among highlanders of Northern Luzon, Philippines. The Ifugao are wet-rice cultivators who until the early twentieth century practiced headhunting, preserving their traditional society with no political and very loose territorial organization. The hudhud meets all the standards typical of heroic epic patterns, including plot structure and formulaic style (Stanyukovich 1983). The folklore of the Cordillera of Northern Luzon is abundant in variations of the ‘lonely/low her... more The folklore of the Cordillera of Northern Luzon is abundant in variations of the ‘lonely/low hero’ – a personage depicted initially as a pitiful, isolated, friendless, sad orphan or foundling, but who appears to prove himself to be a powerful representative of a high-ranking family as the story unwinds. We find those personages in different genres: ritual myths, epics, charms, curses and tales. Betel chewing as a cultural practice is of great importance in the depiction of key mythological figures, lonely heroes in particular. Red saliva, produced in abundance while chewing, is equated to semen and blood, and associated with fertility, life, death and immortality. Betel nut plays a crucial role in motifs of magic birth (conception by betel-chewing) and in defining the kinship ties of a lonely hero. The dog followed Homo sapiens on his journey from the tropics to the Polar zone. Interaction, coo... more The dog followed Homo sapiens on his journey from the tropics to the Polar zone. Interaction, cooperation, and personal relationships of humans and dogs — as with a cow or horse — were combined with dog meat consumption. Food prohibitions are always a way to structure the world, often framed as religious regulations. Dog meat was largely banned in Europe and the Near East by the Abrahamic religions and was stigmatised. The forbidden practice became, in turn, a point of colonial discourse, contrasting “civilized” nations to “savages”. In Asia-Pacific, Southeast Asia, China, and Korea, dog meat is still used. However, it is considered shameful and attributed exclusively to indigenous ethnic groups. Dog meat is endowed with medicinal properties, often seen as “male” food and an aphrodisiac. The only country that openly fought for the legitimization of dog eating was South Korea. There, it was seen as a tradition and part of national identity. However, even there, the pressure of Westernization and the influence of champions of animal rights is so strong that the battle is probably lost. Dog meat consumption moves into a grey zone. This paper looks into the aforementioned issues, using the author’s materials collected in the course of anthropological fieldwork in Southeast Asia, primarily the Philippines from 1995 to 2020 and in Cambodia in 2015, 2017. Правда ли, что ранняя литература строилась на доиспанских эпических сказаниях архипелага? Если нет, то откуда возникла идея преемственности и почему удерживается?
Актуальность темы обусловлена необходимостью исправить повторяющиеся ошибки в трактовке роли филиппинского эпоса в формировании книжной словесности. Постулат о существовании древних литературных записей на архипелаге, как показал А. Окампо, восходит к романтическому допущению Хосе Рисаля. Письменная литература возникла на Филиппинах во времена колонизации в среде, ориентированной на христианские ценности и испанскую
культуру. Решающую роль в ее развитии играли заимствованные образцы – церковные и светские литературные жанры европейского происхождения.
Возведение филиппинской литературной традиции к местному древнему эпическому наследию – некритическая экстраполяция европейской модели, возникшая в период романтизма и поддерживаемая идеологией национализма. Европейская литературная традиция формировалась на основе античной,
европейского эпоса и христианства. Филиппинская же литература вплоть до нового времени исключала собственные источники как языческие, сохраняя лишь элементы их поэтической формы. Наличие устной эпической традиции у равнинных народов Филиппин сомнения не вызывает, однако она была утрачена в процессе христианизации, не сохранилось ни одного текста на языке
оригинала. Российские работы по истории филиппинской литературы также возводят истоки филиппинской литературы к местному эпосу, повторяют утверждения о существовании древних манускриптов на пальмовых листах; нет ясного понимания того, что филиппинская эпика – устная, а не письменная традиция, что ее первые записи появились совсем недавно. В статье использованы полевые материалы автора (1995–2020), работающего с эпическими
сказителями разных районов архипелага с целью записи живого исполнения эпоса, его текстуализации и выявления его прагматики – обрядовых связей и меняющихся функций в социуме.

The paper presents a brief review of the work of the Department of Australia, Oceania and Indones... more The paper presents a brief review of the work of the Department of Australia, Oceania and Indonesia of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the RAS, St. Petersburg, during recent years in the context of the history and current state of Russian studies of the Southern Seas countries and the cultures and languages of Austronesian and Austro-Asiatic peoples of Southeast Asia and Oceania. The authors describe the major directions of this work, including fundamental and field studies in anthropology, ethnography and folklore, as well as publishing and exhibiting activities related to the jubilee year of Nikolai N. Miklouho-Maclay (2021). The article contains a review of the conference “Maclay Readings” that was held at the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) on November 11 and 13, 2020, and was dedicated to the memory of Alexander K. Ogloblin (1939–2020), an outstanding scholar and teacher of many modern Russian specialists in Indonesian and Malaysian Studies.

ваниях, обрядах, мифологии австронезийских народов. Собака была одним из трех домаш-
них животных, сопровождавших австронезийцев в процессе расселения в Юго-Восточной
Азии и Океании. Основными функциями собаки были охрана и помощь в охоте, которая
играла большую роль в хозяйстве мотыжных земледельцев. У горных австронезийцев охота
с собаками сохранялась до недавнего времени. По мере роста плотности населения и свода
тропических лесов на равнинах Нусантары (островной ЮВА) охотничья роль собаки сни-
жалась; у переселенцев на малые безлесные острова Океании она исчезла совсем. Собаку
также приносили в жертву и использовали как источник белка в рационе. Автор вводит
понятие регулярной жертвенной пирамиды и показывает, что собака находится вне ее.
В отличие от других жертвенных животных собака — не дар духам и не вестник; ее посы-
лают в мир духов как бойца, защитника. Там, где охота по-прежнему имеет хозяйственное
значение, связи между человеком и его ближайшим помощником и защитником носят не
только функциональный, но и эмоциональный характер. Когда охота утрачивает значи-
мость, эмоциональные связи между человеком и животным слабеют. В австронезийской
мифологии собака играет важную роль в сюжетах о формировании ландшафта, в мифах
о потопе, о получении человеком огня; она также выступает как прародитель человека
или отдельных этнических групп.

The paper treats about the most essential issues of bringing the recently discovered and document... more The paper treats about the most essential issues of bringing the recently discovered and documented oral epic traditions to the world.
Cultural input of the peoples of the Philippines have been largely underestimated by the Southeast-Asian research community as well as by the general public in the Philippines itself. The lack of ancient written sources on epics is erroneously taken for an evidence of lack of ancient epic tradition in the archipelago.
It is not questionable that many of peoples of the Philippine islands enjoyed using their own syllabaries, and literacy was very widespread in the pre-contact period. However, neither these syllabaries nor the Arabic script that came with Islam since the XVth c. were ever used to put down the treasures of oral epics. Some of the latter were described and even recorded in early Spanish records about the archipelago. Being intimately connected with local polytheistic and shamanistic religious systems, oral epics of the lowlanders were exterminated in the process of rapid Christianization of the archipelago.
In early XXth c., with the change of colonizers, the language of research tradition has shifted from Spanish to English. That was the second crucial blow that distanced the Filipinos from their ancient traditions recorded mostly by Spanish friars and largely kept in the archives unpublished until the present day.
The Philippines of today is still a treasury of oral epics that survived against all odds among the ethnic minorities that dwell in the mountain regions of Luzon, Panay, Mindanao, Palawan, as well as among the Moro – Muslims of the South. A general overview of recent findings of oral epics among these ethnic groups is given.
The presenter gives a perspective of issues that she encountered while recording, transcribing and translating the new epic genres that she was lucky to ‘discover’ and document in course of her continuous fieldwork since 1995 in the mountains of Northern Luzon. Special emphasis is given to hudhud –shaped ritual genres shared by the Tuwali Ifugao of Kiangan, the speakers of a language of Central Cordilleran group, and the “Hanglulu” – speakers of Yattuka and Kelei-i dialects of Asipulo municipality, known under the umbrella name of Kallahan or Kalanguya, that belong to Southern Cordilleran languages. All the named dialects did not have traditional writing systems; literacy was introduced here recently on the basis of Latin alphabet. Grammar studies and orthographic criteria have been developed for the Tuwali Ifugao and Kelei-i (cf. works by Fr. Lambrecht, L. and R. Hohulin, H.C. Conklin), while the Yattuka dialect, which is essential for the hudhud epic tradition, remains linguistically unstudied.
Documenting oral epics is being done in continuous competition with the process of elimination or at least deritualization of the highland traditions in the course of “Filippinization”, Christianization, globalization and development.
Доклад посвящен наиболее насущным проблемам исследования филиппинского эпоса и вопросам документации современных живых ритуальных традиций архипелага.
Филиппины – Золушка Юго-Восточной Азии. Отсутствие древних письменных источников привело к ошибочным представлениям о том, что на Филиппинах не было достойной внимания древней культуры, государственности и развитой традиции эпических сказаний.
Межу тем на Филиппинах доконтактного периода были широко распространены собственные силлабарии, и уровень грамотности был очень высок. Письменность использовалась для записей экономического характера и личной переписки. Эпические сказания никогда не записывались ни этим письмом, ни распространившейся с XV века арабицей, которая использовалась в основном для записи мусульманских религиозных текстов. Из ранних испанских источников достоверно известно о широком распространении эпических сказаний на архипелаге; сохранился пересказ одного из них – бикольского Хандионга - на испанском языке. Эти сказания, носившие ритуальный характер и тесно связанные с «языческими» верованиями, были утрачены в процессе стремительной христианизации архипелага.
Смена страны-колонизатора в начале XX нанесла еще один удар усиливший пропасть между современной и древней культурой архипелага: смена языка обучения и исследования с испанского на английский отрезала филиппинцев от ранних письменных источниках об их доконтактном прошлом. Значительная часть записей XII-XIII века, сделанных монахами, до сих пор не опубликована и хранится в архивах Филиппин, Мексики и Испании.
Тем не менее Филиппины – по-прежнему сокровищница устного эпоса, сохранившегося в непокоренных испанцами районах архипелага: в горных районах Лусона, Паная, Минданао, Палавана, и в южных районах, сохранивших ислам. В докладе дана общая картина исследования эпоса у этих малых этнических групп.
В докладе рассмотрены проблемы, с которыми автор столкнулась в ходе многолетней полевой работы по исследованию, записи, расшифровки и переводу эпических сказаний горцев Северного Лусона. С 1995 г. автор занимается в длительных стационарных экспедициях жанром худхудов – эпических по содержанию и форме или только по форме ритуальных сказаний. Они исполняются по сей день носителями языка ифугао, принадлежащего к центральнокордильерской группе языков, и их соседями, говорящими на «ханглулу» - диалектах яттука и келей-и, принадлежащим к языкам, известным под общим термином каллахан или калануйя, относящимися к южнокордильерской группе языков. Все названные диалекты не имели собственной традиционной системы письма. Грамотность распространилась здесь сравнительно недавно на основе латинской письменности. Были созданы грамматики и выработаны критерии передачи на письме диалектов тували ифугао и келей-и (работы Фр. Ламбрехта, Л.и Р. Хохулинов, Г. Конклина). Диалект яттука, роль которого особенно важна для худхудной эпической традиции, до сих пор не исследовался и остается бесписьменным.
Документирование бесценной устной эпической традиции происходит наперегонки с процессом исчезновения традиционной культуры и языков, деритуализации еще существующих традиций горцев под натиском «филиппинизации», христианизации и распространения современной городской культуры.

du linguiste Gennadiy Y. Rachkov. D’abord spécialiste de coréen, Rachkov s’est par la
suite lancé dans l’étude du tagalog, puis fonda le Département de tagalog de l’École des
Études Asiatiques et Africaines de l’Université de Saint Petersburg et le dirigea de 1967 à
2011. L’ouvrage rassemble des articles émanant d’experts en folklore, littérature, histoire,
linguistique, anthropologie venus tant de Russie, que des Philippines et des États-Unis, ainsi
que diverses bibliographies et catalogues de collections ethnographiques de Saint Petersbourg
ayant rapport aux Philippines. Ce recueil, qui nous semble très intéressant, ne contient que
quatre articles en anglais écrits respectivement par des Philippins et une Anglaise, aussi vaisje essayer de donner ici une idée du contenu en suivant le plan en quatre parties du recueil, afin de montrer la diversité et la richesse des études russes sur les Philippines.

The authors' interest in the history of the term "tirade/tirada" emerged in the process of joint ... more The authors' interest in the history of the term "tirade/tirada" emerged in the process of joint work on the metrics of hudhud, an Ifugao ritual epic genre, in the Philippines. The understanding of the term appeared to be different from the perspectives of textological folkloristics and ethnomusicology. Moreover, while presenting the results for the international audience, we discovered that the term "tirade", which is very common and conventional in Russian (Soviet and post-Soviet) ethnomusicology, is little known in the Western tradition. The paper reconstructs the history of the term "tirade/tirada" from both philological and ethnomusicological perspectives, using the authors' field recordings for demonstrations.

Лексические заимствования в языках Юго-Восточной Азии как свидетельства древних культурных контактов / XIII Конгресс антропологов и этнологов России: сб. материалов. В докладе прослеживается судьба ряда лексем, обозначающих ключевые понятия традиционной материальной культуры народов ЮВА, говорящих на австронезийских, мон-кхмерских и тайских языках. Рассматриваются лексемы, относящиеся к сфере жевания бетеля и употребления рисовой браги-древних практик, характерных для большинства коренных народов ЮВА. Так, в филиппинских языках многие названия кувшинной рисовой браги восходят к прото-западномалайско-полинезийскому *tapay, рефлексы которого в современных языках островной ЮВА означают ферментированный рис, закваску, тесто, хлеб. В южных и восточных бахнарических языках (Вьетнам, Камбоджа) обнаруживаются рефлексы этой же формы, но в значении 'закваска для браги' (dəpɛ 0 2 D 0 тьру, paːj мнонг, tapɛː/kapɛ 0 2 D 0 куа). На периферии мон-кхмерского ареала-Никобарских островах фиксируется слово topa в значении 'алкогольный напиток' (язык нанковри). Аналогичное исследование возможно и в отношении термина для гашеной извести-обязательного компонента бетельной жвачки. Древнеяванский термин для извести apuː/ hapuː/apuh восходит к праавстронезийской форме *apuR 'бетельная жвачка'. Этот корень есть в древнекхмерском языке (1 E 4 3 ka pur / 1 E 4 3 ka por) и в ряде мон-кхмерских языков разных групп. Название гашеной извести в юго-западных тайских языках (ср. тай., лао 0 2 D 0 pu n) также связано с исходным праавстронезийским корнем. Интерес представляет и частое направление заимствований: австронезийские языки-мон-кхмерские языки-тайские языки. Исследование выполнено в рамках Программы фундаментальных исследований Президиума РАН «Памятники материальной и духовной культуры в современной информационной среде» (I.25).__

Poetic language and music of the hudhud ni nosi, a Yattuka funeral chant, the Philippines The pap... more Poetic language and music of the hudhud ni nosi, a Yattuka funeral chant, the Philippines The paper treats about the correlation of text and melody in a hudhud-shaped dirge of an indigenous group of Philippine highlanders. The Yattuka live in the municipality of Asipulo, the Southern part of the Ifugao province. Even within that small territory they constitute a minority: there are only two Yattuka-speaking villages surrounded by the speakers of Keley-I, Kalanguya, Ayangan and Tuwali Ifugao. The Yattuka language and culture are highly endangered. Hudhud ni nosi is performed very rarely because of ritual restrictions and the pressure of Christianization. Only three recordings of that genre have been made so far [Stanyukovich field archive]. We will concentrate on a song performed in February 2012 at the funeral of an old woman at the sitio of Boco, Nungawa village, Asipulo municipality. Hudhud ni nosi was sung by a female soloist with a mixed male-female chorus. The chant follows the general pattern of the Yattuka/Tuwali Ifugao heroic epic genre in regard to poetics and music. However, there are significant peculiarities rooted in the specifics of the sub-genre. By contents hudhud ni nosi is not an epic but a shamanistic journey from the world of the living to the abode of the dead. The paper discusses these peculiarities focusing on the role of music in the metric organisation of the text.

Появление ее можно только приветствовать: в Европе почти нет полевиков­специалистов по ифугао. Однако у читателя, хорошо знакомого с куль­турой описываемого общества и с литературой по теме, при чтении постоянно возникает недоумение. Ремме позици­онирует книгу как переворот в понимании культуры ифугао: до него все исследования были посвящены примату куль­ туры риса, он же показывает, что основополагающей ценностью для ифугао обладают именно свиньи. Первое попросту неверно, второе, по мнению рецензента, доказать не получилось. Культура — многоканальная система, ис­следование одного из кодов весьма похвально, но объявление его основным не выдерживает критики, не говоря уж об этическом моменте — по понятным причинам книга не получила теплого приема в обществе ифугао. В сочетании с рядом фактологических ошибок, положенных в основу теоретических обобщений, работа вызывает разочарование. Книга заставляет задуматься о тревожной тенденции в современной антропологии: маркетинговые приемы подачи своего «научного продукта», ослабление внимания к предмету исследования (в том числе и к верификации фактов, на которых строятся теории) и перенесение его на инструменты, фетишизация языка исследования, введение нарочито усложненной «новаторской» терминологии на смену укорененной в данной исследовательской области, обрывание традиций и изобретение новых.
