Miki Kiyoshi (1897–1945) is arguably one of the most underappreciated thinkers of the Kyoto School—certainly outside of Japan. This collection examines his life and thought as someone who “continuously wandered in search of his own path.” The first three essays examine his confrontation with Neo-Kantianism, Heidegger, and Marxism. The next four essays focus on his philosophy history, technology, anthropology, and the logic of imagination. The final three essays present Miki’s intellectual journey beyond the confines of the Academy: his work as an editor, journalist, and public intellectual, and the reception of his thought in Korea.

do pós-guerra.

do pós-guerra.

To understand Miki’s originality, it is important to contrast his conception of history with that of Rickert’s, one of Miki’s professors during his stay in Germany. Although scholarship about the Kyōto School does not mention these texts, between 1932 and 1935, Miki’s writing focuses on the importance of myth as a manifestation of the historical consciousness during periods of social crisis. Thus, myth, as a form of knowledge tied to the most fundamental ontological level of human existence (that Miki calls ‘fact’), was able to serve as an operationalization of social change.

Since the nineteenth century, Latin American philosophy has developed through an ongoing confrontation between conceptions of "civilization and barbarism." This tension in turn has impacted the relationship between Latin American philosophy and technology. Consequently, a certain "absence of technique" is visible as a recurring topos in Latin American philosophies. To overcome this apparent absence, this paper criticizes the notion of mestizaje using Silvia Rivera Cusicanqui's concept of ch'ixi ('motley') as an alternative framework. From this perspective, Guaman Poma de Ayala's description of colonial violence reveals some hints for deconstructing the idea of "Latin Americanness", while retaining the notion of cosmotechnics. Thus, this paper goes beyond geocultures and metatechnology by formulating a theory of cosmotechnics that is able to articulate politically antagonistic narratives in terms of technical materiality.

In order to do so, I will focus mainly upon two texts: Historical Materialism and Present-Day Consciousness (1928) and Preparatory Concepts in Social Science (1932) respectively. Although these two works belong to very different periods of Miki’s life, I will argue that it is possible to trace a continuity between them by means of the concept of ideology. In a nutshell, this discussion shall reveal that, according to Miki, ideology and myth do not represent modes of false consciousness, but rather praxis-oriented operationalizations of social knowledge that are particularly important during periods of political dislocation.

Many of the most relevant postwar Japanese philosophers, with the exception of Karatani Kōjin, remain largely untranslated into European languages. Matsui Nobuyuki's latest book offers not only a scholarly approach to some crucial philosophical problems of postwar philosophy, but also a critical investigation of what the postwar period meant and an attempt to highlight its relevance for understanding today's post-industrial societies. World War II and the defeat of Japan were historical events of not only political and social importance, but also of intellectual and cultural importance. Postwar philosophy defined itself in opposition to wartime philosophy, especially in contrast to the philosophers of the Kyoto School. This constellation of philosophers, which included Nishida Kitarō, Tanabe Hajime, Nishitani Keiji, Miki Kiyoshi, and Kōsaka Masaaki, represented for postwar philosophers the failure of reason in the face of sentimentalist patriotism. Indeed, many of the philosophers of the Kyoto School tried to interpret philosophically the historical moment in which they lived. This was often expressed in defense of Japan's leadership as the guide of the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. Of course, this heroic voluntarism was shattered with the Allied victory as a result of the horrendous attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Matsui's book investigates the echoes of the tension between prewar and postwar in the form of different aspects; the main one being the tension between pathos and logos. According to Nishida's disciple, Miki Kiyoshi, who had also been an intellectual and political personality of great importance during the 1930s and 1940s, human existence is characterized by the dialectical struggle between pathos and logos, between embodied subjectivity and the objectivity of reason. The "rift"-as Matsui (7) calls it-between pathos and logos is the conceptual mark of the historical tension between wartime and postwar philosophy. Even if it deals mainly with authors of the postwar period, the specters of the Kyoto School are still present throughout the book.

The first symposium, titled ‘The Standpoint of World History and Japan,’ positioned Asia against Europe and advocated for Japan’s historical role in reshaping world history and overcoming Western decadence in view of the decline of the Occident. This narrative purportedly justified Japan’s military activities in Asia. The subsequent year (1942) saw the convening of a symposium titled “Overcoming Modernity” by Bungakukai, featuring participation from philosophers, historians, and critics of music and literature, in which Western modernity is posed as a problem to be resolved. The Kyoto School philosophy fell out of favor in the post-war philosophical landscape, only resurfacing in the past decade with growing international interest. While the legacies of the Kyoto School and the “Overcoming Modernity” movement warrant attention, they must be contextualized within a historical process that demands reassessment today; in other words, we have to overcome the “Overcoming Modernity” in order to shed light on distinct paths toward the future.

Today, we are witnessing the consequences of another historical process: planetarization. Unlike the desire for the consciousness of world history starting from Hegel to Kojève and further, we are now called to a planetary consciousness. Since the launch of Sputnik in 1957, it has become impossible to comprehend the world solely from the perspectives of Hegel’s Berlin or Kojève’s Paris, even though nation-states continue to grapple with their obsolescence. The modern individual is becoming increasingly displaced or disoriented, a predicament foreseen by Martin Heidegger in his “Letter on Humanism” (1946): “Die Heimatlosigkeit wird ein Weltschicksal (Homelessness will be a destiny of the world).” Modern individuals are experiencing a sense of homelessness due to planetarization (formerly referred to as globalization, often seen as a milestone marking the end of history), a process of homogenization that, coupled with the exploitation of natural and human resources, manifested in extractionism and real estate speculation, inevitably leads to exhaustion.

The theme of “Overcoming Modernity” has resurfaced repeatedly, particularly in recent decades, echoing the “ontological turn” movement associated with anthropologists such as Bruno Latour and Philippe Descola, as well as the critique of the Anthropocene. Additionally, it has become intertwined with reactionary politics largely fuelled by an ideological war between the East and the West. In this symposium, we propose a shift in our standpoint from a world history oriented towards the Absolute or the concrete universal to one that acknowledges inevitable homelessness, and from the standpoint of a nation-state to that of the planet. This new situation necessitates a renewed framework for understanding the planetary condition, prompting an actualization and critique not only of Kyoto School philosophy but also philosophy in general: What might philosophy’s responses be to the current planetary condition? How might Asian thought contribute to this reflection on the planetary?

In the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the work of Miki Kiyoshi (1897-1945). A prominent member of the Kyoto School of Japanese philosophy founded by Nishida Kitarō (1870-1945), Miki was a prolific philosopher and militant socio-political thinker. His philosophy provides a bold and original account of the human that seeks to establish the ground for a critical and creative politics. Once seen only as a student of Nishida, Miki is now recognized to have in fact exerted a great influence on the development of Nishida’s philosophy and thus on the Kyoto School.
Miki’s work provides us with a philosophy of ‘action’ and ‘creation.’ Miki was convinced of the critical role of philosophy in the critical question not only of authority but of the self, and in this way in the fundamental transformation of the socio-political sphere. His existential philosophy did not admit metaphysical presuppositions and challenged both naturalism and romantic mysticism which he saw as the root of fascism.

This workshop is part of a series of events that seek to highlight the philosophical importance of Miki Kiyoshi. Together with the Toshiba Foundation and the Society for Intercultural Philosophy, we are also planning the first collection of critical essays on Miki's philosophy.

Furthermore, in this workshop, we will also focus on the following questions: What kind of roles do political myths play today? Moreover, is it licit to speak of “myths” in an era where Twitter and social networks play a central role in the distribution of information? What is the difference between “myths”, “slogans”, “fake news”?

Populism is usually thought of as based on the figure of a charismatic leader who functions as a Signifier in capital letters, guiding and manipulating the rest of the electorate. Is it also possible to investigate the production of myths and narratives “from below”? Both right-wing and left-wing movements can be “popular” and can receive support from the most economically vulnerable strata of society. Is there still a place for revolutionary myths or is all political fiction tied to dominant power, irrationalism and being an instrument of real power?

This program is managed by the Center for the Promotion of Interdisciplinary Education and Research (CPIER) and the Kyoto University Research Administration Office (KURA) and supported by the MEXT-sponsored program for promoting the enhancement of research universities (Kyoto University).
