This involves providing the current user with automated assistance in carrying out his usual tasks, so as to make him more efficient, in particular by reducing his mental load or the number of his actions. This adaptive paradigm combines in a flexible way: adaptive guidance, adaptive shortcuts, and adaptive automatisms. This paradigm is domain-independent and can be applied to a mobile or web application. These different modes of adaptivity are managed by the system during the interaction, in a reliable and reactive manner on the basis of adaptive machine learning leveraging Bayesian theory and dealing with uncertainty in a rigorous way. The architecture of the solution is based on a predictive navigation model underpinned by a finite state machine, and integrating adaptive mechanisms. Our paradigm thus integrates a user activity model, a navigation task model within an interface, and an adaptive interaction model. It offers dynamic navigation assistance by jointly optimizing the nature of the adaptations and the distribution of initiatives between the user and the system, depending on the part of the interface explored and its use. We will endeavor to describe and justify this paradigm from ergonomic and technical angles, supported by a demonstrator running on a touchscreen tablet.

List, focus, multimodal feedbacks and several action means are the keys. A generic touchbased interface component (MenuDfA) was designed, offering hierarchical navigation with continuous and secure gestures along with a high level of flexibility. A novice user profile was set. A comparative test to a classical tactile interface shows that the optimized interface for novice users solves difficulties, but generates also some issues. These latter have been easily resolved through parameters adjustment.

Few studies however have investigated semantic discrimination effects. We report the findings of two experiments that were carried out in order to demonstrate the influence of semantic relatedness between a target word and distractor words in interaction with perceptual discrimination. The results demonstrate perceptual discrimination effects within a semantic task (e.g. from a group of words finding a word which means a type of fish), the role of degree of target typicality and, importantly, the effect of semantic relatedness between a target and its distractor context.

In this method, a menu design is parsed against the definition of usability guidelines in order to detect potential usability problems manifested by any occurrence where a guidelines is not respected. Four evaluation strategies are enabled depending on the end user’s preferences: an active strategy initiated by the system, a passive strategy initiated by the designer, a mixed strategy collaboratively initiated by both the designer and the system, and a strategy by conceptual units based on the domain. From an initial corpus of 312 usability guidelines compiled from different sources on menu design, a final knowledge base of 58 implemented usability guidelines has been obtained for automatic evaluation. By examining how each usability guideline for menu design is expressed, w...

Many different studies, was undertaken throughout 2005 and made possible the introduction of accessibility into a webTV service for all clients (current and future) of France Télécom, taking into account the needs of challenged people (blind people, visually impaired persons, deaf, hard of hearing persons, and people with reduced mobility). This is a design for all oriented approach. The aim is to develop a single application (TV) which contains simultaneously all the presentational forms that will be needed in its deployment: one object, visible through various different filters. The study performed in 2005 addressed specifically the needs and expectations of users for the Ma Ligne TV service, from the point of view of future clients, working on the different modes of interaction available, according to different types of handicaps. In a first pass, a document of recommendations was produced. Another document ...

The TELMA project aims at developing software and hardware bricks for a telecommunication terminal (cellular phone) for hearing impaired users. This terminal will be augmented with original audiovisual functionalities. More specifically, the TELMA terminal will exploit the visual modality of speech in two main tasks. On the one hand, visual speech information is used to improve speech enhancement techniques in adverse environment (environmental noise reduction enables the hearing-impaired to better exploit his/her residual acoustic abilities). On the other hand, the terminal will provide analysis/synthesis of lip movements and Cued Speech gestures. The Cued Speech is a face-to-face communication method used by a part of the oralist hearing-impaired community. It is based on the association of lip shapes with cues formed by the hand at specific locations...

This paper describes a system based on haptics and sound, to assist teaching planar geometry to visually impaired pupils, and then provides more details on experiments carried out in a specialized school. This system allows to haptically read, measure and construct geometrical figures. Moreover, it can help blind pupils to shape a mental representation of geometrical and topological concepts. 1.
