Recent studies have identified two large families of GTP-binding proteins in platelets that are thought to participate in the events of platelet activation. The first of these are the G proteins, heterotrimeric proteins which are best known for their ability to mediate the interaction between agonist receptors and intracellular enzymes such as adenylyl cyclase, phospholipase C and phospholipase A2. To date, at least six G proteins have been identified in platelets: Gs, Gz, three variants of Gi and either Gq or G11 (or both). An additional, pertussis toxin-resistant G protein, Gq, may also be present. The second group of GTP-binding proteins present in platelets is substantially smaller than the heterotrimeric G proteins, ranging in size from 21 to 28 kDa. At least 15 such low molecular weight GTP-binding proteins have been identified in platelets, many of which are homologous to the products of the ras proto-oncogenes. In cells other than platelets, low molecular weight GTP-binding proteins have been implicated in protein transport, cell activation events and malignant transformation. Their role in platelets is unknown.

The cause of this modified performance and decision-making is not fully understood, although the alteration of the criterion level of the observer may be a feature. Novice radiography students were randomly assigned to one of three digitised test banks of 72 wrist images. Test bank A, B and C represented a fracture prevalence of 50%, 83% and 22% respectively. Half of the observers from each group were made aware of the prevalence of their respective test bank. Observers recorded their decisions on an operator rating scale. Results showed significant differences in overall Az between the 50% and 83% prevalence sets (p equals 0.04) and the 50% and 22% prevalence sets (p equals 0.005). Knowledge of the prevalence influenced both sensitivity and specificity values at the 83% prevalence level (p equals 0.03 and 0.02) but not at the lower levels. For test bank A sensitivity was 87%; specificity 53%; Az 0.80, test bank B sensitivity 81%; specificity 48%; Az 0.71 and test bank C sensitivity 85%; specificity 43%; Az 0.68. Analysis of the eye movement patterns of observers under conditions of varying prevalence is in progress.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: 1) to examine the associations between transgender-based discrimination and smoking patterns among a sample of transgender women; and 2) to identify barriers to smoking cessation in a sample of transgender women with a history of smoking. A community sample of 241 transgender women completed a one-time survey. Binary and multinomial logistic regression models examined associations between minority stressors and (1) smoking behaviors; (2) cessation attempts. Both models adjusted for income, education, race/ethnicity, recent sex work, HIV status, depression, alcohol use, and current hormone use. Overall, 83% of participants indicating that they had smoked a cigaret...

IBS can be divided into three main types IBS-D (diarrhea predominant), IBS-C (constipation predominant), and mixed or alternating IBS. 5-HT(3) receptor antagonism has proved to be an efficacious treatment option for IBS-D. For example, alosetron displays efficacy in the treatment of multiple symptoms, including abdominal pain, discomfort, urgency, stool frequency and consistency. However, significant constipation occurred in approximately 25% of patients, leading to withdrawal of up to 10% of patients in clinical trials. Targeting compounds with partial agonist activity at the 5-HT(3) receptor represents a mechanistic departure from the classic 5-HT(3) receptor antagonist approach and should result in agents that are applicable to a broader array of IBS patie...

However, in so far as the axiomatic presuppositions of liberal individualism can be shown to form one coherent whole, the suggestion is that they have a truth value of equal philosophical significance to those of Oakeshott's ideological conservatism.2
