The Mamluk savant, Ibrāhim b. "Umar b. Hasan al-Biqā"ī (809-885AH/1406-1480CE) wrote Al-aqwāl al-qawwāmah fī hukm al-naql min al-kutub al-qadīma (The Straightforward Statements concerning Quoting from Ancient Scriptures), henceforth Aqwāl, in order to confirm authoritatively the permissibility to the Muslims of using Biblical materials for religious and epistemic reasons. It is a critical edition of this work as introduced by Walid A. Saleh that is being reviewed here. A hadith in al-Bukhārī which is related on the authority of Abū Hurayrah indicates that the ""People of the Book"" (that is, Jews and Christians) used to read the Hebrew Torah to the Muslims and explain it in Arabic to which the Prophet Muhammad reacted "Lā tusaddiqu ahla lkitāb wa-lā tukadhdhibūhum wa-qūlū: "āmanā bi-llāh wa-mā unzila ilaynā wa-mā unzila ilaykum...". 1 (Do not affirm nor deny what the People of the Book proclaim but say: "We believe in Allah and in what was revealed to us, and in what was revealed to you ..." Q2: 136. So the dominant, dismissive, and rejectionist attitude towards the Bible in the Muslim tradition is ultimately to be attributed to this declaration. Muslims" use of the Bible before our author, as rightly observed by Saleh, has been either polemical, that is, to attack Judaism and Christianity, or apologetical, that is, to underpin Biblical annunciation of the advent of the Prophet Muhammad. But al-Biqā"i"s challenge to the tradition is eminently illustrated with his copious, perhaps, quotations ad nauseum from the Hebrew Bible and the Arabic translation of the Gospels in his magnum opus, his tafsir work, namely, Nazm al-durar fi tanāsub al-āyāt wa-l-suwar (Stringing of Pearls in the Correlation of [Qur"anic] Verses and Chapters), particularly in the elaboration of Bible-related narratives, Book Review

Eastern Cherokee Fishing, by Heidi M. Altman, is a welcome addition to the corpus of literature o... more Eastern Cherokee Fishing, by Heidi M. Altman, is a welcome addition to the corpus of literature on Cherokee ethnoecology. Using a diachronic approach, Altman interweaves archaeological, linguistic, and historical documentary information with her own ethnographic field research to examine traditional and contemporary fishing practices among the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians living on the Qualla Boundary, western North Carolina. Her objectives are to understand the function of fishing in past and present-day Cherokee economy, to examine indigenous ecological knowledge and its adaptation to local changes, to analyze the boundaries of identity construction within the context of today's ethnotourism, and to compare fish terminology between Cherokee and English vernacular. The resulting publication is an informative presentation of how Cherokee fishing evolved from a seasonally significant aspect of a mixed subsistence economy in the past to a profitable, nearly year-round role in a cash-based tourist economy today. Moreover, from the perspective of fishing, Altman explores cultural, linguistic, and environmental changes, as related to aquatic resources, spanning the period from European contact to the present. The book is divided into six chapters followed by six short appendices. The introductory chapter presents the methodology and theoretical approach used, the objectives of the study, and a brief discussion of the Cherokee language. Ethnographic fieldwork includes conducting interviews with local Cherokee and non-Cherokee people to collect life histories, folktales, and reminiscences about fish and fishing; arranging fishing expeditions to observe traditional and modern fishing practices; and holding directed elicitation sessions to obtain names of fishes. Documentary sources are consulted for information on traditional cultural practices and beliefs related to fishing. Chapter 2 reviews Cherokee history in relation to changes in the local environment. Perspectives on the environment are gleaned from early contact narratives, later ethnohistorical documents, and recent ethnographic interviews. Altman examines environmental changes resulting from the earlier impact of colonization and the later pro

The discussion arising from the encounter between al-Mutanabbi (d. 965) and al-Hatimi (d. 998) concerning hyperstatement, metaphor, and aesthetic emphasis in poetic expression betrays a familiar but not an uncommon hiatus in perception and conceptualization between the Arab poet and his evaluator in the literary tradition. This study attempts to chart the course of development of a coherent theory on hyperbole from the earliest period of theoretical speculation in Arabic until the emergence of a formal theory. The study uses the text and the subtext of the recorded encounter between the two protagonists as contained in al-Hatimi's work.

The PLURIEL network aims to promote the link between researchers on Islam and the Muslim-Christia... more The PLURIEL network aims to promote the link between researchers on Islam and the Muslim-Christian dialogue, in connection with Eastern Christians, and to foster the interaction between academics, social actors and economic organisations. The network gathers 150 researchers and 15 thematic groups. Its 3rd Congress will take place in Beirut, Lebanon from 14th to 17th April 2020. Congress website : https://evenement.pluriel.fuce.eu/ English THEME : ISLAM AND OTHERNESS True acceptance of otherness in a globalized and pluralistic world allows us to measure the capacity of religious, philosophical or political thought to fit in and assume the contemporary societal dynamics inherent to globalization (Taylor). This acceptance is not devoid of resistance that stem from the rise of entrenched identity expressions founded in particular on a vision of equality that is based on the "similar" which assumes a historical-ethnic [1] or religious identity. At the same time, the philosophy of interculturality and the policies of multiculturalism consider and support pluralism and multiculturalism (Fornet-Betencourt, Parekh, Taylor, Kymlicka, Tully). These lead to the reassessment of minority cultures, the rewriting of the history of solidarity, and the re-examination of the relationship between the center and the periphery within a national territory and in international relations. The 3rd International Congress of PLURIEL "Islam and Otherness" aims to address this societal movement from the perspective of Islam and beyond identity-based resistance. It will thus focus on how Islam can be considered a 'resource' (Jullien) in order to approach the other in the globalized world. In this context, what is the other's specific thought that is being expressed to ground and support the dynamics of postmodernity? How is the other presented and brought together within contemporary Muslim movements and the policies of Muslim states to think differently about the legal evolution of personal status and equal civil rights? What thought-provoking strategies are being implemented to go beyond the classical frameworks established as orthodox principles, which are still maintained today to approach the dialogical relationship with the other? How does the rise of an inclusive or pluralistic Islamic thought lead non-Muslim theologians to renew their view of the Islamic reality, particularly with regard to Jews, Christians and atheists? Three approaches will make it possible to address the reality of otherness in Islam in terms of resources : Geopolitical, Dialogal, and Citizenship. The series has established the enormous intellectual Islamic heritage of Sudanic Africa, and this latest volume which profiles some 10,000 manuscripts by 1,875 authors spanning some 350 years in Mauritania and adjoining lands convincingly proves that African authors have written on every aspect of Islamic subject and even more, that is, local history and queer sciences.

This may well explain why the current Israeli-Gaza onslaught has attracted greater attention in S... more This may well explain why the current Israeli-Gaza onslaught has attracted greater attention in SA. SA's initiation of a court action with an 84-page application on December 29 at the ICJ in the Hague against the alleged Israeli Genocide in the occupied territory is so far the most eloquent demonstration of support for the Palestinians. However, other African states have maintained undignifying silence, if not covert endorsement of the massive humanitarian and cultural annihilation going on in Gaza and the West Bank. The reason is not far-fetched; most of the African states have strong diplomatic and trade relations with the Zionist state and her principals whose actions they can hardly challenge, even if despicable and uncivil. That is at the political level in Africa. The economic dimension of the age-long crisis which may have been deliberately sidestepped is that Gaza is assumed to have the majority of the region's gas and oil; will ultimately ensure cheap access to the resources thus guaranteeing stronger economic leverage for Israel in the region.

According to Soares (2006: 2-3), "the boundaries between Muslims and Christians have not always b... more According to Soares (2006: 2-3), "the boundaries between Muslims and Christians have not always been rigid, fixed, or unchanging.. .. [both religions] have shared much in the way of culture in its anthropological sense, and have learned, appropriated and borrowed from each other". So there are necessarily "family resemblances" between West African Islam and Christianity in regard to certain phenomena. The outward expression of faith through religious symbols and practices, and indeed the quantification of piety through creedal semiotics have become exceedingly intriguing. In the West, due to the issue of migration, integration, and terror profiling, and in Sudanic Africa due to the traditional and renewed rivalry and contestation between Muslims and Christians, largely deriving from 'experiential religiosity', (Cf. Riaz Hassan 2005). Whereas the discourse in the West focuses either on Muslims as members of the largest religious minority who are objectified for integration in the context of Western socio-political imperatives, (Lewis and Kashyap 2013; El-Menouar 2014) or on Muslims in South East Asia, Egypt, Turkey, and Kazakhstan (Hassan 2005), not much has been significantly analysed in regard to particular communities in Muslim West Africa. Of course Sanneh (1996), (Ihle 2003), and more recently Østebø (2015), and Loimeier (2013) have attempted some surveys of the causes and manifestations of piety and religiosity in Sudanic Africa in the context of religious and ethical renewal, the situation in Nigeria has not been religiously followed. My contribution seeks to focus on this with particular attention to Yorubaland (southwest Nigeria), where Salafism, as a movement of renewal in orthodoxy and orthopraxis (Meijer 2009) has started to take a new meaning as a counterpoise to Christian initiatives and challenges of secularism and modernity.
