Western education and its appurtenances constitute one of the landmarks of European colonial rule... more Western education and its appurtenances constitute one of the landmarks of European colonial rule in pre-colonial Africa. The roots of western education in Lagos were laid by the Christian missionaries who stormed Africa on a soul-winning crusade in the early 19 th century. From their initial Nigerian bases in Badagry and Abeokuta, the Christian missions relocated to Lagos from the 1850s. By 1888, the missions had established primary schools and at least one secondary school in Lagos. Because the advent of European colonization was a corollary of the implantation of Christianity, the colonialists were highly associated with the evolution of a system of education in Lagos. Followed the British annexation of Lagos in 1861 the growth of missionary schools also increased. More importantly, the colonial government promulgated a number of ordinances that promoted the administration and growth of western-type schools in Lagos. The creation of Lagos as a state and federal territory in 1967 brought many changes and challenges to education, just as the introduction of the Universal Free Primary Education by the federal government in 1976 created fresh educational problems for Lagos State. This paper is a historical reconstruction of the evolution and trajectory of western education in Lagos between 1852 and 1978. The study interrogates the evolutionary challenges to western education in Lagos. In addition, it examines the impact of western education, particularly in terms of social change, on Lagos society during the period.

It locates the neglect of female education on socio-religious and cultural beliefs, and therefore conceives in general terms the activities of Mrs. Wuraola Esan (centred in Ibadan), and in particular, her efforts towards the social emancipation of the female gender. Based on original and primary sources, the paper highlights the role of private endeavour/initiatives, as exemplified by the subject of study, in Nigeria's educational development.

The linguistic complexity of Nigeria and the affinity of the indigenous languages to the diverse ... more The linguistic complexity of Nigeria and the affinity of the indigenous languages to the diverse ethnic nationalities have made the issue of national integration become very worrisome and seem unattainable in the country. The different ethnic nationalities have continued to live in mutual distrust of one another. Apart from the National Policy on Education, which recognises Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba as the majority languages and also encourages every child to learn one of them in addition to the child's mother tongue, government is yet to boldly come up with an official national language policy for Nigeria. In this paper, the use of indigenous languages to disseminate information to Nigerians, in addition to English, which is the country's official language, is considered another option towards solving the country's problem of national integration. The paper anchors on the Relevance theory. Earlier views of scholars are reviewed from where this paper veered. It is concluded with a suggestion that government policies and programmes should be translated into the indigenous languages and widely circulated for better awareness, understanding and participation/contribution of Nigerians to national issues. This would engender effective grassroots mobilisation for national integration and national development.

The origin and early history of Efon, like those of most Yoruba towns, due to the eaucity of written accounts is frosty. However, much evidence point to a certain group, the Isinkin under their leader called Oisikin, as the earliest settler, but later dislodged by another group, the Obalu led by Ekuwi Oloba. Efon Alaaye kingdom was eventually established after the Aaye group from Ile-Ife had supplanted the Obalu. The prime purpose of this essay is to shed more light upon the pre-colonial history of Efon Alaaye. The work seeks to conduct an incisive inquiry into the origin, establishment and early political history of the town. The study adopts the descriptive and analytical method of historical discourse as the framework of analysis.

However, the strong reliance on historical information, particularly in the Third World countries in recent times underscores the acceptance of history as reality and an outcome of objective research. Yet, the writing of history is beset with a legion of problems. Significantly, these problems to a large extent are domiciled in the nature of history itself. This paper is a critical discourse of the major challenges the historian of today encounters in his task of reconstructing the past. The study examines the nature of history as it relates to the problems of historical research, and concludes that the continued relevance of history and historians can only be guaranteed if the latter consistently and diligently address these challenges through appropriate measures.

Contemporary Nigerian society is a complex web of contending, often hostile, ethnic, religious and regional issues. Indeed, a study of the multiethnic, multireligious, multiclass and multiregional dimensions of the Nigerian society and their impact on national integration makes this work invaluable giving the wave of oddities that presently threaten the peace and unity of Nigeria. This paper attempts an examination of the impact of ethnicity on national integration in Nigeria. There is no doubt that conflict among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria namely the Hausa-Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo began in the colonial era but assumed a disturbing dimension after the country's independence in 1960. However, in practice, several federal experiments have shown that the formal constitutional allocation of powers and functions provide only a partial picture of the reality. This is particularly true of federalism trajectory in Nigeria since the demise of the First Republic in 1966. Specifically, between 1979 and 1999, the period of this study, serious contradictions in inter-governmental power and fiscal relations elicited incessant conflict and crisis in the Nigerian federation thereby causing a negative impact on the quality of governance and service delivery to the people. This article is a critical discourse on the origin, nature and consequences of federal practice in Nigeria during the period under consideration.

The clamour for resource control followed the inability of the government to address the adverse social and economic conditions under which the people of the Delta region have been forced to live since the discovery of oil at Oloibiri in 1956. The exploration and production of oil and their concomitant negative effects have continued to affect the people"s agricultural and fishing activities. Pollution and gas flaring have continued to wreak havoc on the people"s means of livelihood while the love for money as well as the desire to live above poverty line in the Niger Delta have forced many into all kinds of obnoxious practices such as illegal oil bunkering cum illegal oil refining, militancy, distruption of the activities of oil companies operating in the area; kidnapping of oil workers with demands for ransom and vandalization of petroleum facilities to cause spillage of which communities would demand compensation. This study examines the quest for resource control by people in the Niger Delta region, and the negative impact of this development on both Niger Delta people in particular and Nigerian state in general. Finally, the work concludes by suggesting the possible ways for peace to reign in the troubled region. The work adopts the descriptive and analytical method of historical discourse as the framework of analysis.
