While it is true that women have embraced academic opportunities and numbers of women obtaining PhD’s in all fields have increased substantially, gender gap remains where it matters most. A sample size of 160 academics was selected across the faculties, and were administered questionnaires. 10 women academic were selected purposively for in-depth interviews. Generally, literature is replete with the marginalization of women in development strategies, hence one of the major factors that contribute to the failure of most development strategies in Africa. It is a known fact that women are economically active in Africa as farmers, workers and entrepreneurs. Yet, within patriarchal societies, they face an array of barriers that prevent them from playing an active role to their full potential to the extent that they can contribute meaningfully and sufficiently to Africa’s development. Gender and development approaches, and many authors within the context of gender and development approaches, have indicated that in bringing women to the mainstream of development, the roles of men in society in relation to women must be brought into consideration. The objective of this chapter therefore is to examine the concept of gender in Africa within a broad development framework....

Unfortunately, rural areas in Nigeria today are usually ghost areas as nearly all the youths have out-migrated, elderly neglected and agriculture has been traded off. The rural areas that used to accommodate over 70 percent of Nigerians has failed in this regard and agriculture that used to employ over 70 percent of Nigerians and used to provide over 70 percent of the foreign exchange earnings of Nigeria has collapsed. Nigeria that used to feed other nations can now not feed itself as it is now one of the biggest importers of food, most of which it can produce and even export. Nigeria spent at least N64 billion on food import in 2010. As at third quarter of 2011, the country has spent N635 billion on the importation of wheat; N356 billion on rice; N217 billion on sugar and N97 billion on fish imports. On the average, Nigeria spends about N1.8 billion on wheat and N1 billion on rice importations daily. Regardless of the...

But knowledge regimes in the world today are not balanced, which leads to dubious knowledge, poor recommendations, and vacuous conclusions in the areas of policy and practice. This is manifested in and closely related to the compromised academic mobility of African scholars, which has become topical and in need of attention across the global knowledge domains. African scholarship and scholars do not easily move across space and time to cross fertilize ideas and knowledge. African academic talents are thus at the margins of global scholarship and are poorly rated. Many find it difficult to participate in international academic activities due to difficulty in obtaining a visa to travel to the West, which is regarded as the locus of true knowledge production and dissemination. Unfortunately, primary research on dynamics, complexities, and contours of African academic mobility, particularly to the West, is scanty, fragmented, and largely anecdotal, which necessitates more robust and contemporary knowledge. This empirical article is set in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, and the country with the greatest number of universities on the continent. Primary data were collected through qualitative in-depth interviews (IDIs). Three prominent universities were selected for the study: University of Ibadan, Ahmadu Bello University, and Lagos State University. Sources of secondary data were unclassified official documents and scholarly publications.

West African region is noted significantly for high volume of trade that goes on within its borders on daily basis, and it involves formal and informal trade. Informal trade however, is an integral, but unrecognized component of ECOWAS economic activities. Over sixty percent of women are into informal trading across ECOWAS sub region, yet, there is gap in literature on the dynamics of these regional women traders across sub-ECOWAS region. Using qualitative method of data collection, a significant number of women traders in informal cross border in sub ECOWAS region were interviewed on their motivations, trade operations, challenges, and coping strategies. The findings reveal that there are several insecurities posed by informalities of women trading practices. These insecurities are associated with activities of law-enforcement agents and touts coupled with the facts that women traders are not knowledgeable about the procedures that guide international trade. Despite several challenges posed by informal cross border trade, women traders had devised coping strategies to negotiate these challenges. Majority of women utilized income generated to support themselves, their spouses and children and above all, it had enabled them to live above poverty level, which is one of millennium goals. The paper recommends that informal economic activities of women in cross border trade needs to recognized for holistic policy to be formulated and, women need vigorous education on the law that guide the rules and procedures of regional trade.

However, previous research had indicated several factors that affect business performances among small-scale enterprise owners. Using feminist theory and a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from fifty (50) small-scale enterprise owners that were purposively chosen across the study area. The findings show that the factors that were significant for female were significantly different from male. For female small scale enterprise owners, marital status (64%) Age of Children (68%), Role Model/ advisors (58%) were significant factors that affect their business performance. For male small-scale enterprise owners, Friends (70%), a lack of Government support (80%), inability to display innovativeness (78%) and Risk-Taking (84%) were significant for male. Lack of availability of capital and finances were significant for the two. Other factors that affect performance include friends, inadequate training and business location. Adequate knowledge of factors that affect gender enterprise performance will go a long way in alleviating these problems. Small-scale enterprises should be supported for poverty alleviation, especially among women and for the nation's economic development

The 21st century has seen a shift in gender roles due to multiple factors such as new family structures, education, media, and several others. The article examines the influence of social change on traditional gender roles. Two hundred and twenty seven respondents consisted of 135 Females (59.5%) and 92 Males (40.5%) participated in the survey. The study adopted descriptive method of research design. The age of respondents ranged between 15 to 56years with the mean age of 36years. Two hypotheses were tested and the results revealed that there is statistically significant difference between traditional gender roles and contemporary gender roles in selected local government areas of Lagos State, Nigeria. The study further reveals that there is statistically significant difference between social change and female gender supports in selected local government areas, Lagos Nigeria. This research work attested to the fact that the shifts from male breadwinner and female career model to double-income and single-parent or female headed households have transformed the established ways of distributing work between men and women. In policy terms at least, women are no longer seen as being solely responsible for family work and care. House chores that were regarded as solely the females' work are now being shared by women and men. Contemporarily, though Male gender is still regarded as the head of the family and is still ahead of female gender in the provisions of family needs, female gender share in all household expenses, such as house-rent, decision making, payment of children school fees. To promote gender equality in this post millennium development goals (MDGs) era, there is need for more women empowerment programmes and projects, enlightenment campaign on more female involvement in decision making and inclusion of women interest in development policies in Nigeria.
