The News Writing Process 'Of all those arts in which the wise excel, Nature's chief masterpiece is writing well'. (John Sheffield in Essay on Poetry, 1723) In writing a news story every reporter goes through these stages: 1. Choosing the subject which involves getting a story idea which the reporter believes is news worthy and deciding to gather the necessary facts as thoroughly as possible using methods that would yield the most valuable information. 2. Planning here involves taking inventory of possible sources both direct and indirect that might provide sufficient facts to make the story comprehensive and complete.

It starts by making a case for an ethically based practice of journalism more so because of the responsibilities of the media as agents of social realities. It also defines ethics and explains key ethical concepts such as values, duties, rights and morality. Ethical theories and principles – pragmatic ethics, humanistic ethics, deontological and teleological ethics and ‘personalist’ ethics, are examined and guiding principles are established for the journalist. A critical appraisal of ethical practice in Nigerian journalism and the challenges of new media technologies are also discussed. New media and communication technologies have brought hitherto unimaginable possibilities and capabilities to the practice of journalism and so have they brought hitherto unheard of ethical problems. The issue of the control and hegemony that are the consequences of the domina...

Against this background, this chapter looks at the nexus of peace and development and the role of journalism in the mix. The concept of development journalism as a kind of deliberative effort, may have received some impetus and the practice established, as governments, policy makers, scholars and practitioners assign developmental roles to the mass media beyond the ideas from the West. Similarly, the notion of peace journalism emerged as a dimension of development journalism. Originally conceived by the eminent peace scholar, Johan Galtung, the Peace Journalism model is a source of practical options for journalists which shows backgrounds and contexts of conflicts, explores hidden agendas, highlights peace ideas and initiatives in news coverage of conflicts and therefore is recommended fo...

In doing this, the paper identifies and discusses the exploitable opportunities that go along with the deployment of theatre in enhancing national development. The paper concludes that theatre, in whatever form, has a vital role to play towards creating a strong, responsive and effective representative institution and in advancing the frontiers of development in any society, particularly in the African context.

The thesis of the paper is that the mass media have always played a major part in influencing behavioural change even though this process is dependent on the influence of several integrated impacts from all aspect of communication. In other words, while we accept the place of other forms of communication such as interpersonal communication in influencing behavioural change, and the fact that it is an integrated efforts from all the forms of communication that ultimately influences behavioural change, we cannot but establish that the mass media impact exist in all of these4 contexts. The paper first establishes the pervasiveness and influence of the mass media in our lives and then situates the discourse within the behavioural change theories and literature, after which discussion on the lesson...
