Given the objectives of the supply chain, supply chain management is situated at the intersection of different professional sectors, each of them with its own vocabulary, its own knowledge and rules. This paper provides a review of the main approaches to supply chain communications through the analysis of different ways of modelling a supply chain and the presentation of new semantic-based approaches that have been and are being developed to improve the quality of the information exchanges within the supply chain.

However, when the full breadth of design for manufacture is considered there are many aspects that must be addressed. This leads to the need for information systems to be able to support multiple views of a product, where each view provides the appropriate representation to support at least one manufacturing perspective. This research has investigated the potential of product model based systems to support multiple viewpoints in Design for Manufacture. The research has focused on the design for manufacture of plastic injection moulded products and has explored the particular viewpoints of mouldability, mould design and mould manufacturing. The approach taken has been to explore particular information structures to support each Design for Manufacture application. An experimental Product Model has been implemented using an object-oriented database.

Problems related to knowledge sharing in design and manufacture, for supporting automated decisio... more Problems related to knowledge sharing in design and manufacture, for supporting automated decision-making procedures, are associated with the inability to communicate the full meaning of concepts and their intent within and across system boundaries. To remedy these issues, it is important that the explicit structuring of semantics, i.e. meaning in computation form, is first performed and that these semantics become sharable across systems. This paper proposes a Common Logic-based ontological foundation as a basis for capturing the meaning of core feature-oriented design and manufacture concepts. This foundation serves as a semantic ground over which design and manufacture knowledge models can be configured in an integrity-driven way. The implications involved in the specification of the ontological foundation are discussed alongside the types of mechanisms that allow knowledge models to be configured. A test case scenario is then analysed in order to further support and verify the researched approach.

The combined use of reference models (CIM-OSA and RM-ODP), an object oriented methodology (Booch), a function modelling method (IDEFO), an information modelling language (EXPRESS). and computer tools is reported. The importance of using reference models for the definition, design implementation of CAE systems is outlined. Modelling methodologies that effectively map the specification of the reference models are described and theeir usage is explained.

A manufacturing model that describes an enterprise’s manufacturing capability information is an important part of such a distributed information infrastructure. This paper focuses on the definition of an object oriented manufacturing data model that can provide a consistent data structure for the construction of a manufacturing model for a virtual enterprise. The methodology that is employed to carry out the analysis and design of an object oriented manufacturing data model complies with the open distributed processing reference model. Unified modelling language (UML) class diagrams have been employed to represent the object oriented manufacturing data model with links to relevant ISO standards, which can be instantiated to generate a virtual, global manufacturing model. Product models approaches have been applied to support cooperation across product development within a Concurrent Engineering environ ment. However, to support design decisions with quality and more consistently, additional types of informat ion and knowledge need to be captured within this approach. This work presents an additional information model, named Product Range Model, to capture design constraints supporting the design decision making process with quality information. The concept of Interaction Elements is presented as a mean to capture design criteria and knowledge, and to support product functional design. An object-oriented approach has been applied providing a relat ively simp le structure to deal with the capture of constraints, as well as allo wing the reuse of these elements for different design criteria. The work has been based on injection mould tool to explore the ideas developed.

One way to aid such acceleration of the design and development process is to effectively share and reuse manufacturing knowledge in an ef- fort to bring about product based interoperability. This paper reports upon the work being carried out in the SAMULET research programme that addresses such factors. It focuses upon (i) how the sources of in- formation and knowledge were recognized, (ii) the definition and categorisation of knowledge and (iii) the potential routes for the reuse of manufacturing knowledge. The research approach is currently being developed to help augment a supportive information and knowledge sharing environment and bring about a more integrated development process within a high tech aerospace company.

Object-oriented modelling has become an established technique for product and manufacturing knowl... more Object-oriented modelling has become an established technique for product and manufacturing knowledge representation. Various models offering generalised classes and class hierarchies have been proposed for this purpose. Additional bespoke classes are however typically required for specific domain representations. This causes problems when knowledge needs to be shared between domains using different models to describe common entities. These issues are especially complex when several systems are involved. For example, a designer accessing product, manufacturing, and third party systems may face multiple definitions of components, facilities and processes. This paper proposes a model that addresses some of these issues. The proposed model can describe manufacturing knowledge without additional bespoke classes. The detailed semantics of the model are based on recent work on ontologies, notably the Process Specification Language (PSL). Whilst PSL provides detailed semantics, it is not inherently object-oriented. The integration of PSL with object-oriented modelling methods is therefore the principle contribution of this work.
