In a war that was described as “a war that has to be won...” by US president Barack Obama in 2007... more In a war that was described as “a war that has to be won...” by US president Barack Obama in 2007, that has cost the United States a staggering $1.7 trillion dollars and that was described by the CIA as “[we are] not losing in Afghanistan, but [we are] not winning either, and that is not good enough” when it was declared “Mission Accomplished” by US president George W Bush in 2003, serves as an epitome of the disaster and utter failure of the US invasion of Afghanistan. For 16 years, the US has been at war with Afghanistan, which many critics are touting as the new Vietnam and there is no conclusion in sight. I will be examining the key features that have led to a prolonged engagement in Afghanistan by studying US Afghanistan strategy, key issues faced by the US in the Middle East and the significant role of Pakistan, one of the United States key allies in the region, have played in the financing and aiding of the Taliban.
