• Correspondence, memoranda, minutes of meetings, interviews, speeches, writings, reports, notes, background and research material, course materials, biographical information, family and estate papers, financial and legal documents, scrapbooks, printed matter, photographs, digital files, and other papers documenting Boorstin's career as a professor of history at the University of Chicago; director and senior historian of the National Museum of History and Technology, Smithsonian Institution; Librarian of Congress and Librarian of Congress Emeritus; and author of numerous works on American history and civilization, world history and civilization, and legal history. Includes material on the establishment of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress, Boorstin's efforts to promote public interest in reading, and his association with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Japan-United States Friendship Commission, Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
• Includes drafts, notes, and background and research material for Boorstin's published and unpublished works, such as his trilogy The Americans (1958, 1965, 1973) and books The Discoverers (1983) and The Creators (1992). Features material documenting Boorstin's various editorial projects, including the Delaware Cases, 1792-1830 (1943) and the Chicago History of American Civilization series.
• Photographs include an oversized black and white portrait of an unidentified man taken by photographer Rosalind Solomon.
• Family papers consist primarily of correspondence and other papers of Boorstin; his wife, Ruth Frankel Boorstin, who edited or coauthored some of his works; their sons; and his father, Samuel Boorstin.
