This article focuses on the relationship between health and urban form, in particular the role of green open spaces. The goal is to identify criteria for evaluating the impact of physical forms such as streets and open spaces, green infrastructure, and built structures on urban health. These criteria are then used to identify paths for the redevelopment of modernist housing estates with the aim of improving living conditions. This challenge remains particularly significant in Poland and Eastern Europe, where a large share of the urban population lives in modernist blocks of flats. First, we examine the modernist housing concept in Europe and Poland and the guiding principles for their development, including the role of green, open spaces. Then, we refer to several studies on urban health to identify normative factors that define the open space design conditions in modernist housing estates. We appl...

Nevertheless, there is no doubt that it has also given a strong global impetus to the digital world, asserting its importance, sustainability and richness of perspectives. With our work we intend to establish a set of best practices aimed at defining methods and technologies that will enable those fascinated by digital technologies to contribute effectively to the digitisation of cultural heritage on a large scale. Various aspects that play a crucial role in the digitisation of artifacts will be discussed, with a focus on the issues involved in the manual realisation of works using Blender and Unity software. For demonstration purposes, two very popular use cases in the Umbria region of Italy are presented: “Piazza IV Novembre” in Perugia with the magnificent “Fontana Maggiore”, the “Palazzo dei Priori” and the Duomo on one side and the Republic square in Foligno on the other, with the Du...

In order to examine the physical structures, we use qualitative assessment based on the comparative framework and the typomorphological approach. We look for criteria of assessment based on the already existing indexes of health measurement. The above attempt is illustrated by the case study of the city of Lodz, Poland. We are looking at the best solutions which would enable healthy lifestyles and climateresilient development. Our discussion refers to optimal models of mixeduse development and streetscapes of a central part of Lodz, namely focused around so-called New City Centre of Lodz, indicating possible alternative paths of its redevelopment. The methodological approach is supported by background research into the fields of resilience and healthy lifestyles.

Not only does it describe the applicatons of technology to urban infrastructure and service provision, it has also become an umbrella containing all manner of innovatve management and organizaton. It attracts stakeholders coming from different branches of industry, who perceive it as a chance to develop and sell products and services. Because of this successful marketng, the concept of smart city will contnue to develop and be adopted, whether we as urban planners and designers, support this growth or not. Smart city implies a systematc approach to the urban economy using telecommunicaton, informaton and communicaton technologies [01]. Smart City as a concept is currently understood as authorites using technology to beter manage the city. Smart cites initatves around the world are driven by the pressure on public fnancing, climate change, producton of energy, limits of resources and rapid urban populaton growth. Wirz Schneider [01] lists Smart Economy/stakeholder management, Smart Buildings, Smart Mobility, Good Governance, Smart Grids and Technologies and Scarcity of resources and energy producton as some of the key factors of the urban assets of smart city initatves. ISOCARP has been involved in “smart cites” for many years, and this is reflected in Society programming and artcles in previous issues of the Review. Former ISOCARP President Alfonso Vegara was a leader in this movement. In 2004, he authored the book Territorios Inteligentes describing the Spanish natonal program for a regional system of smart cites. More recently ISOCARP collaborated in many global events that focus on smart cites. At the May 2016 Metropolitan Solutons conference in Berlin, ISOCARP coordinated with public and private sector organizatons on smart city planning. In October 2016, Habitat III in Quito had several sessions devoted to this topic, and ISOCARP was engaged in many of these as a partner with UN-Habitat and the Global Planners Network. In 2017, the theme for the ISOCARP World Planning Congress was “Smart Communites” with an emphasis on blending technology with social, environmental, and economic planning theory and practce. These programs were revisited earlier this year at the World Urban Forum where ISOCARP organized a session devoted to “Internatonal Smart Cites”, again in coordinaton with UN-Habitat and the Global Planners Network. ISOCARP members have also been actve in promotng smart city discussions through sessions organized at multple events including several American Planning Associaton conferences, Moscow Urban Forums, REAL CORP conferences, Smart and Sustainable Planning for Cites and Regions conferences, and many others

The previously defined features of street and square profiles and skylines, i.e.: central angle, regularity and corrugation, are further completed with variations which develop into a clear, mathematical explanation of the basic notions defining genius loci, including the scale and atmosphere of a place. Altogether, the geometrical analysis defined here stems from the descriptions of urban settings with regard to culture related issues. It also reveals some of the morphological processes in the transformation of urban settings which took place in the discussed locations. The algorithmic method, namely the use of Grasshopper scripting, has been applied for the automation of the process. The preliminary results of analyses are presented as well as further research pathways.

The initial analytical framework, provided thanks to the GIS database and concatenation of attributes coming from various sources, makes some initial observations and conclusions possible. It confirms the thesis that Jewish communities in prewar Poland may be considered an example of a self-organising society, one which could be considered a prototype of contemporary postmodern cultural complexity. The current study provides the initial framework to map the morphology and spatial distribution of the complexity of everyday culture of use of space proper to this extremely diverse group.

Urban Planning, 2021

The threats that arise from climate change and their associated economic, social, and environment... more The threats that arise from climate change and their associated economic, social, and environmental impacts are leading to the transformation of the spatial structures of cities. The growing demand for climate adaptability calls for the development of normative criteria for the design of forms of urban settings that integrate vegetation. Climate-responsive urban design reacts to the challenges of urban physics, which depend heavily on the forms of urban structures and the role of greenery. This method includes research on vegetation indexes and their impact on urban regulatory functions. The goal is to propose a comprehensive framework for assessing the functioning of urban public space, which considers the role and maintenance of green infrastructure. The intersection with the subject matter of analytical urban morphology is evident, in terms of the resolution of the urban fabric and its transformations over time. The framework of climate-responsive urban design also covers examini...

The research stems from the descriptions of urban settings with regard to culture related issues. The geometrical analyses of public spaces, including the examination of streets and squares profiles and urban silhouettes, draw upon the writings of Kazimierz Wejchert, widely recognised for his contribution to the theory of urbanism in Poland. Cultural aspects of given settings require developing methods of description of public spaces. A few hypotheses are formulated concerning the relation between the crowd of people representing a given culture and the urban settings which constitute their habitus. Quantitative parameters describing the form of space are introduced, including: central angle, corrugation and regularity. The algorithmic method has been applied for the automatisation of the process. The preliminary results of analyses are presented as well as further research pathways.

This keyword repeats in documents of global organisations such as the UN and the policy documents of the European Union. To satisfy this requirement, we need proper evaluation framework which would enable planners and all involved stakeholders to make the appropriate decisions and transform the human living environment in the right directions. In the current paper, we have reviewed several assessment schemes used for urban benchmarking looking for methods which might indicate how to improve the quality of life of residents. The article uses the case studies of three housing estates in Lodz, Poland, which we assess looking for recommendations for future planning. The evaluation scheme addresses several features considered essential for citizens’ well-being. We present the method of how to combine them to obtain a consolidated system of indicators. The current study is the first step towards a more developed framework of evaluation for the quality of life in urban planning.
