However, the question we should ask ourselves is to what extent these social problems can be explained by problems in the emotion regulation as we also observe in TD children. Moral emotions, such as shame and guilt, play an important role in peer bullying in TD children. In children with ASD, these moral emotions might be less influential, yet dysregulation of the basic emotions might be more important in understanding the origin of bullying. Objectives: In this study we examined the extent to which emotion dysregulation of basic and moral emotions are related to bullying and victimization in children with ASD, as compared to their TD peers. Methods: The study included 130 children and young adolescents (64 with ASD, 66 TD, Mean Age 140 months), who filled out self-report questionnaires about their levels of guilt, shame, anger, fear, bullying behaviors and how often they were victim of bullying behaviors...

Research paper thumbnail of Approach and avoidant emotion regulation prevent depressive symptoms in children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder

Emotion dysregulation is a well-known contributor to the development of depression in typically developing (TD) children, which might also apply to children with ASD. In this study, we examined the longitudinal relationship between three different ways of emotion regulation (approach, avoidance and worry/rumination) and depressive symptoms in children with ASD and a group of TD children which were compatible with the ASD group (age 9-15-years old). Children filled out self-report questionnaires at 3 time points (with a 9-month break between each session). To account for missing data multiple imputations were used. A regression model with clustered bootstrapping was used to establish which factors contributed to depression and to identify possible differences between the ASD and TD group. Approach and avoidant strategies prevented the develo...

In order to compare the groups, self-report questionnaires concerning symptoms of depression, coping strategies, and mood states were used. The study group consisted of 27 children with cochlear implants, 56 children with conventional hearing aids, and 117 normally hearing children. Hearing-impaired children reliably reported more symptoms of depression than their normally hearing peers. Degree of hearing loss, socioeconomic status, gender, and age were unrelated to the level of depressive symptoms. But attending mainstream schools or using exclusively speech for communication were related to fewer depressive symptoms. The associations with depressive symptoms differed between the groups. For hearing-impaired children, the cognitive aspect...

In this research, 23 high-functioning children from the autistic spectrum (M age 9 years 3 months), 42 6-year-old controls, and 43 10-year-old controls were presented with six emotion-evoking stories and they were asked to explain protagonists' typical and atypical emotions. In the case of typical emotions, as expected on the basis of the mindblind hypothesis, children from the autistic spectrum gave few mental state explanations, referring to fewer than even the 6-year-old control group. However, in the case of atypical emotions, the autistic group performed as well as the 10-year-old controls. Their explanations for the atypical emotions demonstrate that children from the autistic spectrum indeed have the capacity to mind read (with respect to both desires and beliefs), although they do not always use this capacity i...
