Angel. 2007. Directed by François Ozon.
This is the most subdued, melodramatic Ozon film of his oeuvre I have encountered. Angel Deverll (Romola Garai) was born in a socio economically challenged part of England known as Norley. Angel is the most self centered, unaware character in the film. I think Ozon wanted to make an English period film that was timeless. I will strongly recommend Mata Hari (1985) over this film. This is a sad story with Michael Fassbender as a rapist, toxic masculine character. The story just gets more surreal as it progresses. I really think Angel was a lesbian and had better sexual encounters with Nora Howe-Nevinsome (Lucy Russell). The sets are magnificent and the cinematography is superb but, Angel is not among Ozon’s best.

I have a couple of gags that goes in the category of "funny because its true", that I've joked around with for some years now. One is a really mean one and is about my kid, so I won't mention it here. The other one, or ones rather, is somewhat of a daddy issue joke(s) that is reserved for my closest friends, and the third is that whenever there's talk about hot actors I get a little too exited about Michael Fassbender. My boyfriend has taken this to heart over the years, and thinks it's funny. So fun that he had to mention that it was Fassbender's birthday today. First I was reluctant to take the bait, but having watched… -
OK, Vanina I finally watched it. No, I wasn't put off by the atrocious reviews. I just needed to see it!
I can understand the reviews. Maybe it was because the previous film I'd seen was The Comic Strip Presents Red Top, that I kept imagining this tale of a young woman who becomes an overnight success as a romantic fiction writer in 1900s England in the hands of Peter Richardson, or as a French and Saunders sketch, but I don't think so - I think director François Ozon had his tongue firmly in cheek for much of this, and I'm not sure everyone gets that. But, when you see the ludicrous, laughable back projection and hear the sweeping score… -
Extra star because Michael fassbender is unexplainably hot -
Better late than never, I have officially seen every film THE Fassbender has starred in! -
Angel is a British romantic drama film directed by François Ozon. It is based on the novel of the same name by Elizabeth Taylor.
Angel Deverell is an insecure and misfit 17-year-old orphan who lives above her mother's grocery store and writes romance novels. When a London publisher agrees to take one of her works, it is a great success. With the money she acquired, she buys "Paradise", a large country house. While enjoying her aristocratic life she meets Nora, who admires both her and her writing and offers to be her secretary.
There she also meets Nora's handsome brother, an aspiring painter named Esmé, with whom she falls in love. Although he is not interested, she pursues him and… -
the main actress was incredibly irritating yikes.. -
Angel has to be one of the most annoying characters that film has ever seen. Watching her for a whopping 134 minutes was such a tedious task! -
I keep forgetting how utterly annoying Romola Garai is, and then I sit down and accidentally watch one of the movies she stumbled her way through...
I'm surprised by how awful this film is. The story is ridiculous (not necessarily the author's fault, I haven't read the book), the acting is over the top, and film-making is just terrible (I lost track of the number of green-screens present, but trust me when I say, there's a lot of them!).
The biggest crime though. This film made me hate Michael Fassbender. At least for a short time... -
Living your dreams or dreaming your life?
The importance of having a balance between reality and dreams was well shown with admirable actings. -
Even my major crush on Romola Garai couldn't keep me from having a bad time with this quivering, gelatinous melodrama. Also, I'm pretty sure the movie's budget was just a pile of potatoes. -
fassbender was the only redeeming factor in this film.. the characters were just too cringy i couldn’t bear any of them, especially angel
