Synopsis
Adaptation of the classic Herman Melville short story. The narrator, an elderly Manhattan lawyer with a very comfortable business helping wealthy men deal with mortgages, deeds, and bonds, relates the story of the strangest man he has ever known.

A fantastic adaptation of the Melville story that benefits mightily from a decent amount of footage of 70’s Paris. Less overtly absurdist than the American remake (save the inherent absurdities of the story) though Maxence Mailford does bear some surprising similarity to Crispin Glover in appearance and manner. Definitely worth seeking out if you’re at all a fan of the story.

on one hand soothing, nearly hypnotic, with this mysterious, mute, cleric rocking the routine of a small structure of parisian bailifs, often accompanied by an impeccable score (mostly cello and piano) that keeps the tension up, and on the other, a biting satire of the working habits of a certain upper class, which remembered me a lot of olmi's IL POSTO. lonsdale is very touching as this awkward bourgeois with a good heart, which makes him struggle more with himself than with bartleby, with what to do with the latter. also lovely to see the lively, noisy, paris of the 70s through all these wide shots.

A sensitive, profound, thoughtful, heartfelt and deeply personal take on Melville's novel. This is simply the best adaptation of Bartleby to this day, surpassing Friedman's mundane efforts and the goofy frolickings of the US version (with Glover).
It seems that Maurice Ronet was not only an underrated actor but an underrated director as well. It is a pity that he did not have the opportuntiy to direct more.
Верю, что эта экранизация близка к оригиналу, но при этом она похожа на прибалтийские телепостановки и вызывает уныние. Да ещё и пафосный монолог в финале. Лонсдаль очень хорош, но всё же я двумя руками за американскую версию истории про безумного клерка.
