This has been a long time coming. Another of those films they kept playing clips of on various TV segments and one with which I’ve been intrigued. So intrigued, I got the original Alan Moore graphic novel and the plan was to read that before watching the novel to compare and catch any easter eggs. Unfortunately, I found the graphic novel to be a bit of a chore to get through, and to this day I haven’t finished it, so who knows, maybe it gets better.
Anyway, this movie had some things going for it. I liked some of the style, it does date the movie with its sort of 00s editing, but it was nice. The cinematography was great,… -
just hagrid and grindelwald fighting crime -
"From Hell" presents a dark story behind the Jack the Ripper murders of prostitutes that suggests it was something more than acts of extreme violence committed by a madman. Like an Italian giallo that shows how sick society has become at its uppermost levels, "From Hell" takes you into the heights of London society and how it was permeated by anti-Semitism, arrogance, and the sanctioned license to commit barbaric medical experiments just so long as they were done on people at the bottom of the social ladder, especially prostitutes, and its secret societies of "gentlemen". It's a dark painting with a lot drops on it that weave the danger of the dark alleys of the red light district of Whitechapel… -
This movie is really dark. In every sense of the word. From the dark color palette of the dangerous streets and treacherous alleyways of 19th century London to the dark, gruesome butcheries of Jack the Ripper, it is dripping with grim darkness in a dark crimson ocean of blood.
The mystery behind the murders involving the queen, her grandson, an unwanted child and some cultist Freemason activity unfolded in a neat and precise manner, although I did find that the methodical disentanglement of each thread took away from the suspense, the 'Oh my god, it can't be!' moments and especially from the scene where the person behind the Jack the Ripper persona was revealed.
Johnny Depp I really appreciated though.… -
The story of Jack the Ripper has long caught the public imagination, providing fertile ground for a host of retellings in the years since; From Hell taps into some of that intrigue in its take on Alan Moore’s graphic novel, told through the eyes of Inspector Abberline (Johnny Depp) as he’s drawn deeper into this infamous case.
This really comes to life in glimpses of pure visual style, certain shots—especially all the carefully stylised compositions just before the Ripper strikes—feeling as if they could have been torn from a page of the source material. These are incredibly striking, but I don’t think the film as a whole quite matches that on a consistent basis.
There’s something kind of missing from it on… -
As a work unto itself, From Hell is mediocre and unfocused, conjuring Gothic images of foggy, gaslit London nights broken up bafflingly by Rob Zombie-esque grindhouse montages of blades, splashes of blood and split-second glimpses of carnage that actively undermines whatever dread the film elsewhere tries to conjure. It plays out in look and movement like Brett Ratner's take on Red Dragon, consistently undermining itself for the sake of bad music video editing and an insistence on making an unambiguous hero out of a detective whose moral and psychological instability are meant to be explored in more critical terms.
As an adaptation, it's a disaster. If Grant Morrison is comics' great postmodernist, unpacking the symbolism and secular mythos of intellectual… -
The most dapper I’ve ever seen Johnny Depp look. I could have watched a whole series of Depp as a police officer investigating murders. I really enjoyed this story about Jack the Ripper. Who knew grapes were so hard to come by in the 1800s? -
they should have let Depp go wild as Dr. Sigmund Freud drilling his Opium pipe into Jack the Rippers forehead.
what I mean is this could have been more comical, truthful to the material. it has a constantly campy touch, but never dares to "chase the dragon" and look it in the eye. it feels like Lynch & Raimi cinematographer Deming saved this at least visually, while the source material got watered down, social aspects got cut off and Depp has turned in his most lackluster performance possible.
some Freudian funk would have done wonders I guess. -
100-word review: Scotland Yard inspector Frederick Abberline investigates a series of gory prostitute murders, during which he becomes infatuated with one of next likeliest targets. The perpetrator is Jack de Ripper, but who's hiding behind the esoteric moniker? From Hell is a murder mystery playing dress-up. The period piece context is curious, but blunders a little at being veritably grounded in the portrayed time and place. The way it addresses how prejudices obstruct reasonable police-work is respectable though (there's an explicit lesson to be drawn here that converts well to contemporary affairs), and so is Johnny Depp's uncharacteristically subdued performance.

Many movies have been made about the story of "Jack The Ripper" and while no one will likely ever know what really happened, this movie is as much of a theory as any. I'm pretty sure it never happened like in "From Hell" but that doesn't matter.
It’s an atmospheric movie that is primarily made in blood red and pitch black tones. The story is told from the perspective of the investigating inspector Abberline and from the prostitutes who fell victim to the probably most famous serial killer in the world. "From Hell" is both an exciting crime movie and a slasher.
In order to really stand out, the very special moments and big surprises are missing, but those who are enthusiastic about movies about serial killers or occult thrillers should be completely satisfied here. "From Hell" is overall an absolute inspiring trip to the heart of darkness. -

It’s hardly Shakespeare, but it’ll do.
Great British Grapes of Wrath! Johnny Depp and Heather Graham are in merry ole England hunting Jack the Ripper and falling in love. Robbie Coltrane makes for a great sidekick and Ian Holm is outstanding as the creepy Sir William Gull.
Riding in on a moody gothic atmosphere, this Hughes Brothers flick is packed with style and gore, but the story’s so convoluted it’d take several premonitions and multiple days in an opium den to figure it all out.
I haven’t read the original graphic novel, but I hear this version pales in comparison…
”The butchery’s irrational, yet meticulous and deliberate.”
