An incredibly silly spoof of Hunt for Red October. This is ZAZ-type humor, though it's not executed nearly as well. The movie depends on a rapid succession of sight gags, caricatures, bad puns and absurd situations borrowed from military thrillers.

Ned Beatty gets things started as Admiral Malice, the cigar-chomping guy who handles the Navy's weapons contracting. Then there's Roddy McDowall as a Mr. Rogers-type Secretary of Defense. Bill Pullman, in a rip directly from Airplane!, is a submarine commander who is afraid of the job.

Just so you know what you're dealing with: Michael Winslow, who did all the comic voices in the Police Academy movies, is on hand. So is Joe Namath since this is prime sports cameo…

*alternate title: "Dive!" (no, really)

Not exactly the undiscovered "Hot Shots!" competition (though it is a military-based spoof released in 1991), or "Police Academy Goes to the Navy" (though it does have the same splendid illustrated cluster-style poster and a bunch of nutty boob cadets and co-stars Michael Winslow), but anything-goes, nothing-remotely-serious absurdist comedy is a real comfort zone for me.

Bill Pullman plays Biff Banner, doing Robert Hays-as-Ted-Stryker schtick (a doofy hero piloting a large vehicle, but struggling with frayed nerves), boarding the U.S. Sub-Standard, an underdog submarine full of cartoon caricatures, malapropisms, overly literal interpretations of common sayings, dumb names, sight gags, oversized props (check out those hats with really long brims...), a holodeck, yes a few "captain's…

Quickie Review
The ‘90s was filled with silly farcical comedies but this one may be the most obscure of them all. Only having a very limited theatrical run here in the States and released straight to video soon after that, this dumb but fun cartoonish comedy sees us meet the crew of U.S.S. Standard (get it because it’s the Sub Standard) led by Captain Biff Banner (Bill Pullman). They’re the worst crew ever assembled and assembled on purpose by the shady Admiral Malice (Ned Beatty) but Banner and his crew are willing to give the submarine life the old college try. Everything happening throughout the movie is so over the top and so ridiculous that it borders on being a…

80erForever

The low rating on this movie once again proves that strangers on the internet have no taste.
Also Robert Vaughn in a cape end of sentence.

Many filmmakers have attempted to rip off AIRPLANE!, but nobody has ever done it as well as director/writers David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker did, not just in AIRPLANE!, but also other comedies done in the same style, including TOP SECRET, HOT SHOTS, and the NAKED GUN series. Definitely not approaching ZAZ levels of hilarity are director Mark W. Travis and screenwriters Darrel Zarubica and Randolph Davis, who spoof submarine movies in the little-seen GOING UNDER. Anchoring the mayhem is star Bill Pullman, who had worked with Abrahams in the hilarious RUTHLESS PEOPLE and should have known better. One swears you can actually smell him sweat trying to salvage this turkey.

Pullman is claustrophobic Navy commander Biff Banner, who…

“Here's where our nations's leaders take mommy and daddy's tax dollars and turn them into machines of global destruction.”
- Reporter, (Michael Winslow)

Going Under rips off the ZAZ formula, and is absolutely stupid - but it is funny. There’s enough here for Bill Pullman to pull off such absurdity, with a straightforward aloofness like Leslie Nielsen in the Naked Gun. _Going Under’_s poster appears like a classic Mad Magazine cover, and that’s ultimately what Going Under is - Mad Magazine come to life. Stars from Spaceballs, Police Academy, as well as the legendary Ned Beatty along with Robert Vaughn fill the cast, and the constant stream of sight gags make the film at least a fun experience.

CRYOGENIC VAULT

No wonder Warner Bros. tried so hard to bury this piece of shit. Funnies thing about this film is that it's director (who never directed any other film after this and for good reason) who calls himself "director's director" wrote a book on art film making and is actually giving film courses. I wonder if he shows anyone his "work"...
