What better time to watch New Year's Day than on New Year's Day?

It's one of those talky movies loaded with neurotic New Yorkers contemplating their every move in life. It's tolerable enough, and fine if you like this sort of thing.

Features a baby-faced David Duchovny in only his second movie, pre-X-Files. It also has Maggie Wheeler, pre-Friends, where she is well remembered as Chandler's nasal-voiced on again/off again girlfriend, Janice.

My biggest problem with this movie was the fact that these women were supposed to move out on New Year's Day but the Christmas tree was still up? How unorganized are these people anyway?

feels every bit the freewheeling improvisation exercise that it is, to its betterment and detriment, from Henry Jaglom, full of neurotic and sex obsessed characters (played by people like David Duchovny, Miloš Forman and Maggie Wheeler from Friends) -- not as biting as Jaglom's most successful films but offers a decidedly frank look at a side of New York that would predict Whit Stillman's Metropolitan the following year

HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!!! 🎉🥳🎊
New Years/New Years Eve is my FAVORITE holiday, and highkey I was sort of expecting this to be a lil boring 🥱 and so I didn’t want to ruin my New Year’s by watching a boring movie, SO… I actually watched this a couple days ago, but I’m logging it today cause it’s New Years, and this movie is called New Year’s Day 🎉🥳🎊

This movie was basically a bunch of people in a apartment, in NYC 🗽
The movie cuts back and forth between everyone, and it’s a lot of just talking 🫤
My issue was, I didn’t really liked the characters 😭 They weren’t really interesting in my opinion, and some of them were WEIRD 😳 So most of the convos they had didn’t really intrigue me.

BUT David Duchovny was in this!!! 😄
Which is why I watched it 😊
BUT there weren’t any aliens 👽😔

Nothing will sour a perfectly fine movie like a gross old man going in for his kiss

Thought this would be a great title to kick off 2025 and I ended up absolutely loving it. This is my first exposure to the work of Henry Jaglom but if his other films are like this I'm definitely going to be a fan. This feels like a huge influence on the conversation-heavy "mumblecore" style films of the 21st century that I so enjoy. The cast is strong but I particularly loved Maggie Wheeler as Lucy, a character that definitely gives off "dream girl as written by a dude" vibes but Wheeler pulls it off. Jaglom himself gives an interesting performance as the other "lead", frequently coming off as a creep but also occasionally wholesome. Definitely interested to see if some of the elements present here show up in Jaglom's other films.

if david duchovny isn’t there to kiss me on the mouth at a house party then why even bother going
