Synopsis
Film shining a spotlight on the untold story of The Sidemen, the musicians behind some of the greatest artists of all time. The Sidemen are the forgotten 'guns for hire' that changed musical history. Featuring interviews with Mick Jagger, Billy Joel and Keith Richards, this film takes viewers from the 1960s to today, via global stars such as Prince, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones and Beyoncé.

Netter Einblick hinter die Kulissen der Musikindustrie, die mit Sicherheit noch spannender daherkommt, wenn man sich wirklich für Musik interessiert. Die Doku setzt den Frauen und Männern in der zweiten Reihe, hinter den großen Stars, ein schönes Denkmal. Dabei stimmt es fast schon traurig, dass einige von ihnen, die auf der Bühne vor zig tausenden Leuten spielen, im echten Leben hart an der Armutsgrenze leben. Aber so ist das - there's no business like showbusiness. -
An excellent overview of the hard working sidemen and women who support the big acts like Billy Joel, Prince and The Rolling Stones: those musicians for hire who play at live shows and often even contribute to recordings as songwriters or session musicians.
Absolutely marvellous glimpse into a world which is often taken for granted, and a celebration of those talented and versatile artists. -
A music documentary that's initially about the younger players who step in to breathe new life into the touring acts of past-it artists like the Rolling Stones and Billy Joel, but also encompasses Wendy & Lisa from Prince and the Revolution, as well as a guy who played guitar in David Bowie's 1970s band when he toured America. It's a bit random and unfocused, in other words, not to mention self-aggrandising when it comes to the latter session musician. The most interesting bits are, unsurprisingly, those with Wendy & Lisa, because they co-wrote certain Purple Rain tracks, including the title song, whereas the others were just the titular guns for hire.
