A middle-aged nightclub singer with a checkered past (Virna Lisi from QUEEN MARGOT, THE POSSESSED from 1965, CASANOVA 70) & a plucky young bartender, the local orphan, manage to get fired together. In uno dei suoi ultimi film, Lattuada ritorna al dramma popolare, anzi populista, sembra sparigliare il testo di James M. Cain, (già portato sullo schermo italiano, da Visconti), interpretandolo alla propria maniera. Non difettano le atmosfere salmastri, sudaticce e noir, dove la lordura va di passo con l'atmosfera spesso notturna e soffocante della sceneggiatura. Piccole vite, per piccoli uomini. Ottimi gli interpreti, a cominciare da Virna Lisi, per arrivare alla ferina e sorprendente prova della Clio Goldsmith. Bellissima e convincente una giovanissima Barbara De Rossi. Splendido.
