Synopsis

Just for context, I've been watching the talented Jeon Do-yeon for around over 20 years.. I believe my first with her was "The Harmonium in My Memory" way back in the day. She's pretty much been an award winning machine with plenty of noteworthy and memorable performances, including the one and only "Secret Sunshine".
She also has a knack for daring roles in productions like "Untold Scandal" and (one of the lol and quite erotic!) "The Housemaid", among many other worthy productions... such as (for example) "Happy End", "You are my Sunshine", "Birthday", "Beasts Clawing at Straws" and "Kill Boksoon", sort of come to mind.

I went into this film, excited, but not really knowing what to expect. I had heard some great things from one of my friends in Korea, who is a critic himself, so he had me sold on it, but even then, his details and praise were pretty vague. All I know is that Jeon Do-yeon is my favorite actress, and so naturally, I am always down to see whatever film she stars in next. This fanboy loyalty (I worded that weird) led me to one of my favorite Korean films I've had the pleasure of seeing in quite some time.

Well shot, but let's face it, it's one of those elevated boredom kinda movies with an overly melodramatic ending that will make your eyes roll.
bleak as heck bit of neo-noir, a little too cruel for me to personally really enjoy. jeon doyeon is given so little to work with 😬 all the men were 🚩🚩🚩 and how is park sungwoong in literally every korean film?
Another unfairly rated, well-acted Korean film. Noirish, hopeless, grey: like a Philippe Grandrieux film with a trope that Korea does so well. Predictable and draining, threadbare and painful: you will not have a good time. Kim Nam-gil is a jaded cop, Jeon Do-yeon is a fallen woman. Living is hardly an option. But survival might be one. Love is torment. L’enfer. It's not worth a shot.

A nice noir thriller/drama mixture about an investigator who falls for Jeon Do-yeon's femme fatale/not so femme fatale.
The story itself isn't as original as one might hope which the premise might just have given away, but Do-yeon brings in another of those superb performances of which she has delivered about half a dozen by now and the score makes proceedings a delight with it's mix of mysterious woodwinds and tragic cello playing.
Ambiguous, mysterious, a tad too long yet superbly acted, definitely worth a watch.

Just about middle-of-the-road drama suffering from a terribly miscast lead and some serious pacing problems. The core relationship of the movie never feels true even though lead actress Do-yeon Jeon tries her best to flesh out her clichéd character remaining the only one evoking some sort of empathy here.
The plot isn't very original which is a shame (put intended) for a Korean movie and only really kicks off in the final 15 minutes. It's very well-shot and far from being unwatchable but overall THE SHAMELESS was a disappointment for me.
Make or Break Scene: I didn't make the movie after all but the finale elevated the movie a bit.

Almost arrogantly slow.... which works for it. The acting is top-notch and the pace makes the important moments effectively stick out. Not exactly a happy love story either. Is perhaps a little too confident in it's story telling, but that doesn't stop it from being a quality drama which bubbles beneath the surface.
