“He's like a fucking computer; information goes in and then it goes out with an ass in between”
Released in the following hype after The Blair Witch Project, Det Okända (The Unknown) is one of the very rare examples of Sweden attempting a mainstream horror movie. Weirdly shot like a found footage-movie without being found footage, the film actually leans more towards something like The Thing but basing everything on such a thin premise quickly makes the paranoia amongst the scientists feel monotonous.
The characters do lack depth and solid acting behind them, but there’s still a reasonable amount of time devoted to define each character and for as much as the cinematography feels weird, the shaky footage does fit…
Sweden isn't really known for its long tradition of making horrormovies and there is a reason for that: Almost every god damn actor here is a pompous twat that really can't act. I'm not joking here, there is something about Swedes that make it extra hard for them to become another character, to embrace makebelieve. Anything fantastic is considered lesser. So here is a rare example of a actual genre movie that came out straight after Blair witch project, wanting to cash in on its success. It's actually not really a ripoff, it's not even found footage although the handheld camerawork does make it feel a tiny bit in the same vein. It's about a group of people staying in…
Det Okända (The Unknown) was distributed as a swedish The Blair Witch Project upon it's release. Ok. Yeah. It takes place in the woods but no. No Blair Witch here, if I would compare it to something it would be Invasion of the Body Snatchers or The Thing but it nowhere near as good of course, far from it. Det Okända is about five biologists that are sent to the north woods of Sweden to investigate the effects on a forest fire. The idea itself is pretty cool and I still kinda like it and it's fun to see some swedish horror for once. The paranoia works pretty good but the (almost invisible) threat would have benefit from showing itself a little bit more. The acting (of the five people involved) are everything from shitty to okay but overall is Det Okända a pretty good slice of swedish paranoia.
Riding off the success of Blair Witch Project without understanding the principles of found footage horror beyond using a handheld camera, so now you have people adding this to various "Found Footage" lists without even having seen it.
Still fairly decent acting even if the characters' conflicts were petty as hell ("JAG VILL ÄTA PÅ MCDONALDS!"), and at least the handheld camera did its job in adding to the unnerving tension. Dumb but chill viewing for also bringing back old forest camping memories.
_Dead by Daylight_’s newest killer The Unknown was revealed yesterday, and I’m absolutely obsessed with him. His unnerving posture and uncanny voice create this unique sense of cosmic horror that had yet to be explored in any meaningful way, and the way his lanky body stands limp and pops when he contorts freaks me out immensely. Plus, his unique abilities look like a ton of fun to utilize and absolutely terrifying to play against as a survivor. His lobby and chase music is also beautifully chilling, sounding like a unique blend of The Deathslinger and The Nemesis that I’m going to be listening to all week. If this thing stays in a condition comparable to what can be seen in…
Honestly I'm being nice because I don't think the script is that bad and Ingar Sigvardsdotter can REALLY scream her head off, and her performance did greatly unnerve me. That's about what I like.
I swear this movie puts you in mortal fucking combat with the cameraman. There are close-ups where characters are standing perfectly still and the camera just veers off in four different directions like it's trapped in a goddamn tornado or something. And at night, oh my God I CAN'T FUCKING SEE ANYTHING! STAND STILL FOR TWO SECONDS! JESUS!
There are also no money-shots in the whole movie. Everything scary that the characters see or react to is either just off-screen or just talked about. Like imagine…
svenska alien, vem visste att mamman i telenor reklamen hade världens mest haunting skrik
Ah this scared the living shit out of me when I was 11 and my dad forced me to watch it late at night with him (mom was away for something dunno). Rewatched at Cinemateket and well, turns out it is an unintentional but none the less hilarious comedy! Some of the most hilarious dialogue I've heard in a long time.
Terrible movie incredible experience!
Svensk socialrealism x Invasion of the Body Snatchers.
The invasion of the body fuckers- oh no...
