The Eight Mountains 2022

★★★★½ Rewatched 08 Dec 2022 1
How dare they make a film that tries to and quite successfully captures the indescribable grandiosity of life?! How dare they film such a gorgeous, ambitious story right up in the mountains and not on a set?! How dare they make such an unforgettably moving film about friendship and nature and the paths we take in life?! How dare they play with my heart like this?!
There's a moment in this film when Pietro says he needs to get away,…

Nine Days 2020

"Have you ever reckoned the Earth much?"
Rewatched Edson Oda's Nine Days again for the first time in 18 months since Sundance 2020 and... you know this is an absolute *masterpiece*, right? It's everything magical about cinema and the spectacular existence of life and beyond. Pure bliss. Astonishing and awe-inspiring in every possible way, from the score to the set design to the performances to the story itself about life and what it means to be alive. This is an…

The Gutter 2024

★★★★ Watched 15 Nov 2024
I quite enjoyed the humor in this. Some very off-beat, subversive jokes and wacky comedy that only works because of Shameik Moore. Doesn't all come together into the most engaging film overall (too much of a Kingpin copy) but it has a few really funny moments. Definitely an "acquired taste" comedy.

Asteroid City 2023

★★ Watched 23 May 2023 6
Huh. At least after my first viewing, this is one of my least favorite Wes Anderson films. And considering I love sci-fi and love Wes Anderson, I should've loved this?! But nope. It's an extremely strange, oddly low-key, super nerdy alien encounter parable about... I don't know what? What was that? The most confounding Wes Anderson film yet. So many characters stuffed into a film-within-a-play meta story that only makes it more confusing. That narrative structure really took me out…

Suspiria 2018

Luca reigns!! OMFG, you guys. OMFG. You have no idea how much this is going to fuck you all up forever.
I really don't even know where to begin with Suspiria. The Kubrick comparisons I heard beforehand are accurate. There's so much to unpack, and analyze, and discuss. Take your time. We have the rest of this year, and the next few years, to talk about it at length. Just don't miss it. See this film.
