“ Doctor Puf” and Brillat-Savarin : The Art of Cookery as a Literary-philosophical Game. this pap... more “ Doctor Puf” and Brillat-Savarin : The Art of Cookery as a Literary-philosophical Game. this paper analyses the intertextual connection between odoevsky’s text Doctor Puf’s Cookery Lessons (1844-1845), the first example of cookery literature in russia, and brillat-Savarin’s The Physiology of Taste (1826). the intertextual connections between odoevsky’s work and brillat-Savarin’s Physiology are of various kinds : definite quotations, quotations, translations or summary of some of the French text’s passages without any reference to the author’s name. the most interesting intertextual procedure, however, is the personification, the concretization of some of brillat-Savarin’s precepts and statements in the very character of doctor Puf. the present study outlines only some of the themes that characterize Doctor Puf’s Cookery Lessons, an extremely rich and complex work, that deserves further attention.

Animal images are ubiquitous in Gavrila Derzhavin’s poetry and can be found in works belonging to... more Animal images are ubiquitous in Gavrila Derzhavin’s poetry and can be found in works belonging to different stages of his career. This article studies issues connected with the functions that the world of fauna performs in his works and aims to find out whether it evolves over time. The image of the swan in his Horatian ode of the same name (1808) is considered a symbol of the poet’s immortality, and unpublished poems on the death of a dog an expression of the burlesque direction in Derzhavin’s work. With a view to determining the general typology of animals in Derzhavin’s lyrical poetry (with the exception of fables and parables), the article proposes a general classification of animals in order to then turn to a detailed analysis of two little-studied works (The Magnitude of God (Rus. Velichestvo Bozhie) (1789) and Morning (Rus. Utro) (1800). Together with the poems, the author examines the illustrations that accompany them in the Grot edition of Derzhavin’s works. Important studies have been devoted to the small poetic forms of the epigram and the epitaph of the period, but the inscription, because of the vagueness of the exact genre defi nition, has not yet received due attention. The article offers a general preliminary outline of the data concerning this genre in the 18th century, and the analysis of certain inscriptions in the works by Derzhavin.

The article is a introduction to the publication of the minutes of the meetings of the Russian lo... more The article is a introduction to the publication of the minutes of the meetings of the Russian lodge "Northern Star" in Paris, concerning the discussion on the admission of women to freemasonry. The proposed archival materials, deposited in the National Library of France in Paris, date back to 1945 and 1948. The women's issue became more relevant after the Second World War due to the fact that Masonic lodges had to recover and recruit new adherents. The article offers a brief overview of the women's issue in the history of Freemasonry in general, and in the Russian emigrant environment in particular. One of the founders of the North Star lodge, M. Osorgin, spoke out in the 1930s against the admission of women. In the discussions of the 1940s, the Masonic brothers repeat his opinion almost literally. Women's participation in Freemasonry is rejected using either gender or social arguments. Аннотация: Статья вводит в научный оборот протоколы заседаний русской ложи «Северная Звезда» в Па... more Аннотация: Статья вводит в научный оборот протоколы заседаний русской ложи «Северная Звезда» в Париже, на которых шли дискуссии о допущении женщин к масонству. Публикуемые архивные материалы, отложившиеся в Национальной библиотеке Франции (NBF) в Париже, относятся к 1945 и к 1948 гг. Женский вопрос стал особенно актуальным после Второй мировой войны в связи с тем, что масонские ложи должны были восстановить работу и рекрутировать новых адептов. Предлагается краткий обзор женского вопроса в истории масонства и, в частности, в масонской среде русских эмигрантов. Писатель М.А. Осоргин, один из основателей ложи «Северная Звезда», в 1930-е гг. решительно высказывался против допущения женщин к масонским ложам. В дискуссиях 1940-х гг. братья-масоны повторяют его мнение почти буквально. Участие женщин в масонстве отвергается с применением либо гендерных, либо социальных аргументов. Русские масоны, в основном, прибегают к гендерной аргументации: женщинам нет места в масонстве, потому что они не мужчины. Масонство, согласно Осоргину, является культом мужского творческого начала, не свойственного женщинам. Дискуссии о женском вопросе среди русских масонов-эмигрантов являются немаловажным источником также для изучения их литературного творчества; в частности, послевоенные литературные произведения Гайто Газданова тесно связаны с масонской идеологией.

This paper describes an important aspect of Russian aesthetic discussions of the 1920s, focusing ... more This paper describes an important aspect of Russian aesthetic discussions of the 1920s, focusing on “The Structure of the Poetic Symbol,” Andrei Guber’s contribution to the volume Artistic Form (1927), which was a collective volume assembled at the State Academy of Artistic Sciences (GAKhN). The theoretical and terminological basis of Guber’s essay is analyzed. The aim of the paper is to demonstrate that the theories de- veloped by Gustav Shpet and those who worked under his guidance at the GAKhN in the late 1920s anticipate in many respects subsequent directions in the study of literature, from structuralism to semiotics to narratology.
