Boundaries are all around. In fact, everything has a boundary, especially in the therapy world. The most important will be the one between a counselor and client. Even though this boundary is one of trust and comes with consequences if that trust is broken, there have been many cases of boundary crossing. Boundary crossing refers to “any deviation from traditional analytic and risk management practices, i.e., the strict, 'only in the office,' emotionally distant forms of therapy (Lazarus & Zur, 2002). Looking further ahead in this summary, dilemmas that can occur in the counseling profession coincide with the ethical decision-making skills of the counselor.

The Behavior Education and Treatment Program, known as B.E.S.T., is a prevention and intervention program meant to change problem behaviors in students within the public-school system. The program’s focus is to change negative behaviors into positive behaviors with its own form of positive reinforcement and deems to be evidence supported. This review is a synthesis of peer reviewed articles and an investigation into positive reinforcement programs proposed successes. The success of the program comes from a multi-dimensional approach; not one intervention changes problem behavior; instead it’s a combination of interventions that create a more successful student. This literature review’s focus is on what behavior challenges exist, possible factors behind them, and the best approach to combating them and conforming them into more productive behaviors. However, even though this approach has been key to modifying problem behaviors, in the past other approaches have been used and shown to be ineffective, so is this reform the best approach? Based off the evidence, support for the B.E.S.T program’s ability to change problem behaviors in its participants is evident. The theory behind the BEST program will be evaluated with supporting evidence.
Keywords: negative behaviors, positive behaviors, Behavior Education and Treatment Program, multi-dimensional approach, positive reinforcement, modify, problem behaviors, intervention and prevention programs.
