 ladycatherina I am looking for a Secret Santa for my disabled friend's two children, niece, nephew, and a young family friend. The family has fallen on hard times this year after she lost her husband and became even more sick than she was before. Please let me know if anyone here would be interested in helping, or could direct us towards an organization that could accept late registration and help provide some gifts. I'll provide my friend's address upon request. Thank you very much for your time and attention, here are a few thoughts from my friend about what the children might like: Boy, age 13, friend's son. [Size large men’s shirt, 101/2 – 11 men’s shoe, size 34, 30 men’s pants]. He probably would prefer to get some kind of drawing stuff or some kind of toy for a teenager. He loves Bart Simpson (no beer stuff though). He also likes to light candles in my Mom’s room for her. He might enjoy a few white or turquoise neat candles. He loves to draw, he loves the computer. He’d like learning or education computer software or something. He has a great sense of humor and loves to laugh and make people laugh too. Both my son and daughter love to act. Girl, age 12, friend's daughter. [Size medium tops, 81/2 – 9 women’s shoe, size 6 women’s pants]... My daughter loves that bunny you see on clothing. The bunny that says those cute little sayings, you know. She also loves Sparkly clothes and says that’s all she wants this year (sparkly clothes). She is mature for her age and extremely intelligent. She is also very wholesome and dresses conservatively. Boy, age 15, friend of my friend's son. He probably would prefer to get some kind of toy for a teenager. He loves cartoons and he used to like bugs. Girl, age 4, friend's niece. This is my niece, my younger sister’s little girl. She is extremely mature for her age]... She loves make up and dressing up. She loves to look beautiful. She hates naptime. She has a very short attention span, even for her age. She loves Dora the Explorer and some of the other popular cartoons out for little kids.  ladycatherina I'm now involved with a charitable Wiki (an open-source online website set up for anyone to edit, designed to be democratic and updated regularly by eyewitnesses and local experts on changing conditions - like the Wikipedia online encyclopedia). This is for the survivors of the recent earthquake in Pakistan, to help coordinate volunteers and donations of shipments of survival supplies. (http://www.helppakistan.net). So far I've written a press release and some Craigslist/blogger's postings to draw awareness to the cause. The earthquake has killed at least 73,000 people so far and left at least THREE MILLION homeless and at risk of starvation and death by disease in the frigid Himalayan winter. So guys, click on http://www.helppakistan.net - they're looking for foreign and remote volunteers too, who can help with databases and phone calls and stuff. What they really need is someone who knows how to do web design/Wikipedia stuff who can make their site more readable and organized, and can proofread all the broken English - although it's generally understandable, I give them credit for that. | ladycatherina For everyone who told me they were interested in sending cards and letters of encouragement to the Hurricane Katrina victims - I have finally been able to locate an address to send them. This is a church and school in Lafayette, Louisiana that's spearheading a drive for supplies and cash - but also specifically said they would love it if people just sent cards and messages of support (even if that's all they sent), and that they would give them out to people who've been affected. This is a secular, nonpartisan relief effort - the church just volunteered its space to store items and some of its people to process them. My good health - being able bodied, breathing, having sight and hearing.2. Having discovered a funny, clever, great new series of beach-reading books, the Ladies' Detective Agency sequels by Alexander McCall Smith. 3. All the fresh, ripe, organic tomatoes in my father's garden.4. Not having to worry about money at the end of every month (I'm currently staying with family till I get back on my feet). 5. My mother's positive, confident attitude while facing breast cancer, in large part inspired by her faith. Now think of a way you can take one of those blessings and share it with others (post if you want, or think on this for later). | ladycatherina Hi everyone, I'm Cristina, and I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, after recently having moved back from Davis (in the Central Valley near Sacramento). I just finished a degree in Comparative Literature (world lit) and am heading towards a journalism career. My dream job would be to travel the world, writing about interesting people I meet and places I see, and call attention to social issues for which I'd like to raise awareness. Now I'm staying with family in the suburbs until I can find full time work and get back on my feet, and so that I can help my Mom, who has breast cancer, in case she needs it. Some acts of kindness anyone can do right from their computers: 1. Amnesty International has a petition out now to get Congress to continue funding the Violence Against Women act, which has helped to provide shelter and resources for those leaving abusive relationships. You can sign an email petition for that from their website: www.amnestyusa.org2\. The Hunger Site, www.thehungersite.com (and a whole family of fellow sites for other causes) will donate money for each click to a lot of good causes - feeding the poor, caring for sheltered animals, giving books to kids, etc. Advertisers pay for everything, and they don't even take down your email or anything like that. 3. Write a letter to your local newspaper (or your congressperson, after the next congressional elections) in support of international debt relief. There are some easy fact sheets and info on www.jubileeusa.org4\. Free Battered Women - a San Francisco-based organization working to allow women incarcerated for self-defense kinds of crimes related to domestic abuse they've suffered to get adequate legal representation and new and fair trials. There are plenty of email petitions on their site, too - www.freebatteredwomen.org5\. Craigslist has plenty of people who are homebound or homeless and have no other friends and family to talk to who share about their personal problems or concerns on the general community section. You could drop a few folks an encouraging email (www.craigslist.org)6\. There are plenty of other environmental and other organizations with email alerts - just search online depending on what causes you support. Here's a real-life one I've done a few times, got the idea from a florist's promotion: Go down and buy a dozen roses (if they're just in a bouquet and not a vase, they can be cheap, I got one for just 17.95) and hand them out to whoever in your neighborhood looks like they need one. Perhaps homeless people, tired-looking moms with lots of little kids, the elderly, or even traffic cops who usually just get yelled at. (comment on this) |

 byrthebb gave me $100 this past Sunday after the service. Bless her. She knows I'm struggling. She said God has been so good to her and she just wanted to help someone else out.I hope she is OK. She also told me she was going to have some tests done soon. I need to call and find out how she is.I wish I could help others out but right now my finances don't allow for it. I am volunteering as much of my time as I can. That may have to be scaled back if I start this telemarketing job next week. I am hoping something else comes along before then but it's not looking good. The temp. services I'm signed up with just don't seem to have anything. I hate telemarketing but I'm running out of options. I have rent and bills to pay-including a huge hospital bill which will take me another 5 or more years to pay off.Well enough of my ramblings. I commend you all.I have had many pleasant brushes with totally random people, but this one stands out the most:Recently I was in New York City with a youth group — we were doing mission work to help homeless people. Community service is not something I typically do, so that was a great experience in general, but one of the worst things about it was that I could not for the life of me get along with our three adult chaperones. Midway through the trip, I thought I might just flip out if I had to deal with their detached lack of interest in our wishes any more, and I was really honestly missing my parents and wishing I had some sort of good adult role in my life right about then.We went to a small one-act play festival and sat through five short plays, one of which was terrible, two of which were decent, and two of which were really top-notch. My favorite of the five was innovative and funny, and one of the main actors drew me in with some strange charisma despite the annoying character he played.Afterward, we were allowed to mingle with the actors, directors and writers. I drifted around, looking for someone I was interested in speaking with, and I saw my actor of choice. His charisma was even more noticeable now that he had dropped character—he had the nicest smile. His name was Robert.He passed me, and I began the whole thing by poking his arm. I was rather shocked at myself, but he was immediately inviting, smiling and asking lots of questions, clearly interested in who I was, not just talking about his work. We had a brief conversation where I complimented him and the writing, and he guessed from about ten words out of my mouth that I was an aspiring writer (not really sure how he pulled that one off). He told me I ought to speak with the playwright, and offered to point him out for me when he got the chance.I'd figured he wasn’t really planning to come back.But I ran into him again that evening, and he asked if I’d found the writer yet. I said I hadn’t, so, upon locating him, Robert brought me over to him. He was chatting with two elderly, pompous-looking stuffed-shirts, so I waited patiently, but they didn’t show any signs of stopped soon. Robert returned, and went so far as to interrupt their conversation and introduce me.I ran into him several other times that night, and every single time he was unbelievably kind and willing to drop everything and talk to me. I actually ended up walking out with him, talking about a film I was trying to make with a hand camera.His last words to me: "It was lovely meeting you; you’re a great person to talk to!"That was exactly the kindness I needed.
