Variation between strains in the incidence oe various abnormalities of egg maturation and fertilization in the mouse (original) (raw)
Summary
The incidence of the following types of abnormalities of egg maturation and fertilization was studied in 6004 fertilized eggs from the inbred mouse strains, CBA, C57BL, A and RIII and the outbred stocks, J and V: polyspermy, suppression of second polar body formation, suppression of first polar body formation, cleavage of the egg at meiosis (‘immediate cleavage’), uninucleate eggs, and eggs with subnuclei in addition to, or in place of the normal female pronucleus. The mean incidence over all strains of these sis types of abnormality was 0.8, 0.9, 0.3, 0.3, 1.6 and 0.8%. respectively. A significant variation between strains or stocks in the incidence of an abnormality was found in each instance, with the exception of the incidence of polyspermy. This is taken as evidence that the susceptibility of eggs to the various types of abnormal development is controlled by the genotype of the female. With two types of abnormality, ‘immediate cleavage’ and uninucleate eggs, the evidence also suggested an interaction between the male and female genotypes.
