BlackDragon1971 - Linus Tech Tips (original) (raw)

I just wanted to relay to forum members new and old, that there are Positive Upgrade Experiences to be had. I felt it was time to update my RAM in my system, as I was reusing the RAM kit from my old x99 chipset platform. I had been using 64 GB of Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2666 MHz Quad Channel Kit (4x 16 GB matched DIMMs). They were QVL (Quality Vendors Listed) listed on the new motherboard when I upgraded my platform to an Intel Core i9 10920x CPU and an ASUS ROG Strix x299 Gaming-E II motherboard... one less component to worry about so I dropped them in, even if older DDR4 RAM. They worked flawlessly, but at a lower Frequency than the new platform could achieve. So, I did my research and checked the QVL List for the motherboard again and found a drop in replacement for the slower RAM. The Model Number of RAM was old and Corsair's website said that that model had been replaced with a newer model. I reviewed the new model to make sure that it should be compatible. I had wanted to go with a Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3600 MHz Quad Channel kit, but there was no assurance that that would work... it would be a guess that it would be compatible and Boot. So, I chose the Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 MHz Quad Channel Kit. FedEx took it's time getting me my new RAM Kit, ordered off the Corsair Website. They shipped it from Taiwan and it was the holidays after all. Being Canada, you let computer parts warm to room temperature before installing them. The wait was anxious. I removed the old 2666 MHz RAM one stick at a time and replaced each with a DIMM of the new 3200 MHz RAM, ensuring that I still had a Quad Channel configuration going. Upon Power On, the system Booted and I went into the UEFI BIOS and looked at my X.M.P. Settings and they were set to XMP Profile #1. However the New Speed was 3200 MHz instead of the old 2666 MHz. So the Memory Controller and BIOS had updated automatically. I changed to Advanced Mode and Looked at My XMP Settings there... all was Good. Exited Saving Changes. Booted straight into Windows, no problems. Ran CPU-Z and checked my Memory SPD, it showed 3200 MHz. Ran Cinebench R23 Multi Core for 10 minutes. I got a lower result by only a few points, within the margin of error. So nothing different about my new setup realistically. Nice though that I am using the proper RAM Kit for the platform I have. Sometimes with a bit of forethought and planning, your Upgrades can go well ... or at least as planned. Hope folks Holiday Upgrades are successful too... BlackDragon
