Linux GPS [16 Aug 2010|08:51am]
Wow. I thought I knew a lot about GPS, but I really don't understand crap. I have a small Garmin Geko 201 device, and now a nice new EEEpc 901a (with Ubuntu Netbook Edition. ) So i want to use my Geko and my EEEpc together. Simple right? Install GPS softwares (TangoGPS, viking, and GPSDrive), connect device, and ...... What? Where do I get maps? Can I download maps before my trip? I'm going to Las Vegas. Do I need network connectivity the whole time to see updated maps? Why isn't there a simple, easy to use, set up guide? Maybe there is one and you know where? Thanks in advance

Kismet mystery trouble [11 May 2008|09:41pm]
[ **mood** | contemplative ] I've got a bit of a puzzler. I've been running Kubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy) for AMD64 on my laptop for a while. Once I got the kismet.conf file right, kismet worked fine. Just recently I reinstalled, switching to Xubuntu 7.10 (also AMD64) in hopes of getting better performance. I did get a boost in performance, but now, while kismet appears to work, it never detects any APs at all, not even the one on my own network. The .conf files are identical, and I would have thought that everything effecting kismet would have been the same between Kubuntu and Xubuntu. Has anyone got any notion as to where to start looking for the culprit? I didn't find anything very closely related in the Ubuntu forums, but we all know how difficult it is to do an exhaustive search for a problem that you can't put a definite name to.

nVidia Geforce (7 series) on Ubuntu Gutsy - constant low graphics mode [15 Mar 2008|03:42pm]
I'm having this same problem, and from searching the forums, it seems that a lot of other people are, too. I bought my new motherboard (with onboard graphics) because several people told me that nVidia is excellent with Ubuntu, but this whole experience has seriously soured me on nVidia. My motherboard is an nforce 630i from XFX, and the onboard graphics card is an nVidia geforce 7100. I have nvidia-glx-new installed, after nvidia-glx didn't work - switching to nvidia-glx-new hasn't changed a thing, but it's what's still installed. As seems to be the case with so many folks, X keeps starting in low graphics mode. It informs me that it couldn't properly detect my graphics card or screen, and gives me the option of manually configuring them. I do so, telling it to use the nvidia driver and that my monitor is 1024x768, and I click OK; it immediately decides to ignore what I've just told it and boots into 800x600, which it had started to do anyway. Going to System->Preferences->Screen Resolution shows me that it won't allow me to choose any resolution above 800x600; going to System->Administration->Screens and Graphics shows me that it's back using the vesa driver (which is the default in low graphics mode) and thinks I'm using a Plug n' Play monitor that only supports 800x600 resolution.I have run dpkg-configure xserver-xorg more times than I can count and am sure everything is as it should be; no joy.My xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, and results from lsmod (remember I was in low graphics mode when I ran these - I don't know if that makes a difference) are available at http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=4521613&postcount=10 .I tried running dmesg and it scrolled so far that I couldn't see the beginning anymore. Should I post just as much as is left in my terminal? Also, my sound isn't working either. Is that a function of low graphics mode for some reason, or am I going to have to troubleshoot that separately? At the moment I'm more concerned with sorting out the graphics, but the missing sound is an annoyance as well. Going to System->Preferences->Sound, selecting the Devices tab, and clicking any of the Test buttons gets me this error message:audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 !audioconvert ! audioresample !gconfaudiosink: Could not open source for writing. Thanks in advance for any help!

stumped? boy am i... 8/ [11 Sep 2007|03:37pm]
i posted yesterday about having an installation of kubuntu that didn't have firefox preinstalled, among other things, and i got to the point where i decided that i really must have a wonky installation, so i re-installed kubuntu, and i got exactly the same thing!! an installation with no preinstalled firefox, no preinstalled gimp (both of which "BREAK", and won't install when i request installation with adept), an installation of Ark that is there, but doesn't work, and, very likely, other arcane weirdness.i know that, when i run kubuntu from the live CD (dapper drake), things just appear to work without difficulty, but there is no firefox installed on the live CD. on purpose? i don't know... it seems to me that it was there once, but not on any of the subsequent times i have booted from the live CD.i also know that, if i download an iso of feisty, and try to burn it; on the linux side it says that it's going on okay, but when i try to boot from the resulting CD, it turns out that the CD is blank; on my W2K box, it won't go, because the iso is bigger than the blank CD will accept by a few k; and if i burn it on my Os9 mac, it fits and is all there, but it won't boot.i'm going nuts here: i've got a (now blank) linux box that was built out of bits and pieces a few years ago, topped off with an 80g hard disk, an AMD 1.3ghz processor and 1g of ram. it should work, but it doesn't... any clues?

i just installed a fresh instance of dapper drake, and (using konqueror) i went to "getfirefox dot com" and it didn't recognise my OS... and when i downloaded the recommended package and tried to install it, nothing worked.now i have heard that kubuntu "just works", and i know from experience that firefox "just works", so i suspect that i've done something wrong... anybody know what? i'm stumped.

okay, i got a "new" (used) CD-RW drive and swapped it out for the old one, and adjusted the BIOS settings so that it showed up. now, when mandrake 9.2 is booting, if i hit "escape" so that i can see all of the text rather than the splash screen, it says "Mount special device: /dev/hdc does not exist", and when i "su" and do a "mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom", it says "mount: special device /dev/hdc does not exist"...i know there's got to be some way of doing this, because i originally installed mandrake 9.2 from CD-ROMs. am i really going to have to recompile my kernel in order to do this?

i am currently running mandrake 9.2 on a box that i built out of bits and pieces a few years ago, and i thought i would try out ubuntu, which is how i discovered that my CD-ROM doesn't work...df lists an ATAPI-compatible disk drive, and /dev/hdc is where it is pointed, but when i try "mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom" it tells me "No medium found", in spite of the fact that i have had the same medium in both my windoesn't box and my mac and it has shown up without a problem on them...after looking through the CD-ROM HOWTO, i'm afraid that it's going to mean recompiling my kernel, which i have never done. i don't have the first clue about how to procede. can someone clue me in?

I am confused on semaphores and don't know where I need to put it in my program and what needs to go in it and what it needs to control. Does anyone know anywhere I can get some extremely basic info on semaphores?

Automatix: What's the straight dope? [01 Oct 2006|01:52am]
.Hi. Newbie considering "migrating" to Ubuntu.**What is the straight dope on Automatix?**I'm seeing many very positive comments, but also a fair bit of FUD -- mostly pretty vague warnings along the lines of "Steer clear of the Automatix, kids ... scary!"So what are the facts? If you don't like it, why?How does it really compare with EasyUbuntu / Easy Ubuntu and BUMPS? (And for that matter, with just installing applications "by hand" as desired?)- xposted -

Gmail notifier login or Adblock issues? [07 Aug 2006|04:27pm]
I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.5 and just installed the gmail notifier. I'm trying to get it to log in, and it just says "Logging in..." for ages and doesn't seem to be doing anything. Is it supposed to take a million years? When I log in on gmail.com, it takes just a second or two. Also, has anyone else had issues with Adblock failing to load in Firefox?
