CD Review: A New Kind of Light - Songs of Christmas I saw this CD about three weeks ago on CBC Television. It's recorded by three local singer-songwriters: Jill Barber, Rose Cousins and Meaghan Smith. It features new arrangements of traditional carols as well as some songs written by the trio that express what the holiday season means to them. I originally purchased it because their sound is rather interesting (sort of a soft jazz) and also because the profits from the sale of the disc go to to Feed Nova Scotia and Maritime food banks. That was the original motivation, but now I'm reviewing the CD because I really like it. The arrangements are really cool and the vocal textures are really warm. The two tracks that stand out in my mind are the very novel arrangement of Little Drummer Boy, and the warm, silky In the Bleak Midwinter. It's definitely worth the money and it goes to a good cause, too!
Anyone in the Maritimes can buy this disc at any Lawton's Drugs store. If you're not in the Maritimes, you can still get it by ordering online. The info is here on the CBC Maritimes' website.
