However, child labour literature focusing on a historical perspective in Sub-Saharan Africa is understudied and, consequently, the findings for the few studied cases are generalised for the continent at large. This work attempts to address this gap by looking to the case of Portuguese ex-colonies. Contrasting against competing theories, I argue that belonging to a minor empire counted less than belonging to a poorer territory, i.e. with fewer resources. In spite of figures such as forced or pawn labour, African adult male labour had sufficient agency to follow higher wages paid in Rhodesian and South African mines. Children, with comparatively less agency, were either used as auxiliary roles in the higher paying jobs or to replace adult labour in plantations and other activities abandoned by adults. 1 Centre for Administration and Public Policies (CAPP) and School of Social and Political Sciences (I...

We analyze the case of Portugal, showing how considering the effects of inflation reverses previous conclusions regarding the evolution of fish prices and revenues (fisheries performance). We further emphasize the importance of variables related to economic drivers, such as the prices of substitute goods for understanding the demand for fish, and of exchange rates as a determinant of fish imports. We call for a stronger contribution from economics and greater interdisciplinary scrutiny of a crosscutting scientific area such as fisheries research.

Unlike Greece, which is already in its third consecutive adjustment programme since April 2010, Portugal managed to successfully conclude its 3-year programme in April 2014. Although the austerity measures, including higher taxes and cuts in the salaries of public servants, caused recession and record high unemployment rates (around 16%), the country came out of recession in the second quarter of 2013, and the unemployment rate has been decreasing since then. Two years ago most political analysts considered the re-election of the Portuguese government as almost impossible. However, the slow, but steady, economic recovery increased the government’s popularity giving it a fighting chance in the 2015 elections. The possibility that the Portuguese government would be re-elected after conducting a tough economic adjustment programme was especially interesting to European institutions and to other programme countries. This has made the Portuguese legislative elections gain unusual international interest.Compete2020, FEDER, Portugal 2020, FCT

This article outlines the scale and spatial extent of the phenomenon before debating the role of children employed in the textiles, clothing and footwear sectors. We consider key determinants governing supply and demand for these workers together with an evaluation of state-sponsored efforts to alleviate the situation. Analysis shows that some factories in mono-industrial parts of north-west and central-eastern interior Portugal are continuing to resist the globalization of competitive pressures. This is achieved by reducing real labour costs, utilizing informal work practices, exploiting the cheap productive capacity which minors bring and the legislative loopholes which prevent its eradication.
