Their design is repeated with a certain degree of variability; however, to achieve an overall unity, simplified and stylised elements are rendered in a modular manner within the self-contained mosaic.

This paper argues that the modularity of these vignettes reflects the viewers’ comprehension of the chosen cities’ significance. As such, it collectively represents an intellectual construction of cities not as living spaces but as projections of meaning. The case study of the two-unit vignette of Kastron Mefa’a presents the intrinsic connection to its identity as a city even though it was neither a polis nor a bishopric. Its inclusion highlights the self-perception of the settlement, and adds an additional layer of relevance beyond that of modularity.
