Research paper thumbnail of Socio-Economic Discrimination and Processes of Securitisation as Catalysts of Radicalisation among Franco-Maghrebis

Undergraduate Journal of Politics and International Relations, 2019

This emerging trend is placed into a wider continuation of historical susceptibilities among Maghrebis and their link to ethno-political and religious radicalisation and in some cases, transnational terrorism and Jihadism. This study examines how disproportionate socioeconomic discrimination coupled with securitised media portrayals and domestic political debates have acted as radicalisation catalysts of this diaspora present in abundance across France and other EU member-states. This body of research also considers the impact and relevance of emerging geo-political influences such as a resurgent French far-right and a shift in modern jihadist narratives. This shift from direct to structural violence has enabled a renewed ideological penetration and tangible resonance among Europe's Muslims of immigrant origin; many of whom reside within impoverished and disadvantaged urban peripheries. Susceptibility to radical narratives arising from the converging dilemmas of deprivation, discrimination and grievance have formed the basis for one of the most pressing threats to international security and social wellbeing for generations.

Research paper thumbnail of Legacy of failure - Why the two-state solution died under Obama’s watch

The mix of politics, religious ideology, ethno-nationalism, complex geography and a history of aggression and grievance on both sides make this conflict notoriously challenging to resolve. Four main issues encompass the roots of the conflict: Territory, Sovereignty, Security and Recognition.

This case study will analyse the period from January 2008 to January 2017; coinciding with the span of the Barack Obama presidential administration. This period also accounts for the second, third and on-going fourth terms of Israeli Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu who began his second term in March 2009; conversely, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has remained the recognised leader for the Palestinians since succeeding Yasser Arafat in 2005. The converging presence of three leaders over the chosen period allows from comparison of positions, stances and actions. The purpose of this study is to account for Obama’s failure to bring around meaningful progress within the peace process. Opening chapters will provide a contextual summation of the conflict and its actors, subsequent chapters will examine two Obama-era rounds of peace talks and account for their failures. Further analysis of the wider stalemate between the parties will employ Dean Pruitt’s ‘Readiness Theory’ in order to detail evident lack of motivation and optimism between parties as of late.

This unreadiness has soured the diplomatic and political atmosphere; further hindering progression to negotiations to reach a solution to this seemly everlasting volatile conflict. The concluding chapter evaluates Obama’s legacy and provide thoughts for the
future.

In order to accomplish such a task, a definition of international terrorism will be offered. Following this, an examination and exploration of the failed state concept will take place with careful consideration taken to outline its origins while highlighting the debate concerning semantic notions of fragility and failure within policy and academia. This section will culminate in defining the characteristics of a failed state. Subsequent subsections will be dedicated to illustrating, with tangible examples, how each characteristic pertaining to state failure can facilitate the incubation and proliferation of international terrorist groups.

This recognition of the changing nature of conflict prompts a necessary enquiry into the efficacy of meditation implementation, does it cause more harm than healing?

In order to answer such a pressing question, mediation as a theoretical concept will be briefly defined and reviewed; its key attributes, practitioners and actor dynamics will be highlighted and examined in order to understand how they influence outcomes. Due to word constraints, this paper will only refer to select examples that display instances of either failure or success in praxis. Following on from this, Ripeness theory will be described, accompanied with an example of how a lack of said ripeness led to failure in peace-efforts in Sri Lanka. Lastly the nature of conflict will be considered in relation to resolution outcomes.

Just like other nations in a post-2008 world riddled with financial uncertainty and mistrust, economic issues have begun to preoccupy the minds and political motives of ordinary citizens of this small, young Jewish state. This essay will attempt to explain the societal divisions that exist within Israel and how those divisions have led to a fragile political system with contrasting political agendas and ideological differences. Above all this text will try to destabilise the established assumption within some camps that Israeli politics is solely concerned with the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
