We are becoming a more globalized citizenry. With technological advancements, we are more aware o... more We are becoming a more globalized citizenry. With technological advancements, we are more aware of the events around the world. Internet capabilities allow donors to make donations to nonprofit organizations in developing countries. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation directs grants to global development and global health (www.gatesfoundation.org). With all this international nonprofit development, can it be predicted which countries are more likely to have more nonprofit organizations? This study outlines some of the research on the factors that are present in countries with a strong nonprofit sector. It follows with a brief regression analysis suggesting that, while this factors may be present, they are not a predictor to how many nonprofit organizations will develop.

Leadership is often sought after, studied and envied. Much research has focused on what makes a l... more Leadership is often sought after, studied and envied. Much research has focused on what makes a lead-er. Despite the volumes of research, no one has yet reached a consensus answer. “Leadership is one of the most observed and least understood phenomena on earth ” (Burns, 1978, p.4). A topic that has been heavily researched within the last century, early leadership studies examined the traits and characteristics of individual leaders. Initial research focused on the physical attributes of leadership figures such as their height and their attractiveness. In a review of early leadership literature, Stodgill (1948) noted that the personal character-istics that most researchers found in leaders included capac-ity, achievement, responsibility, participation, and status. As theories moved from focusing on traits to focusing on skills, they became more aware of the relationship between the leader and the follower. Communication is key in the public sector as governments aim to interact with and respond to thei... more Communication is key in the public sector as governments aim to interact with and respond to their residents. Citizens often participated in government through face-to-face communication like town meetings. Today, digital communication has become increasingly important to improving government-citizen relations. The authors explore how governments are using Web 2.0 and mobile government (m-government) to spread information quickly. As governments implement these new communication tools, they must also consider ethical implications associated with technology. The research identifies the elements that lead to successful integration and the biggest barriers that government employees are facing during the transition.

Delta Health Alliance (DHA), the backbone agency for the Indianola Promise Community, is a nonpro... more Delta Health Alliance (DHA), the backbone agency for the Indianola Promise Community, is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that was originally established to help improve the health and wellbeing of children and families in the Mississippi Delta. The Delta is a region of 18 rural counties (10,653 square miles) situated in the northwest corner of the state. Understanding the important connection between good health and educational outcomes, DHA uses a mixture of healthand education-focused strategies to improve the lives of children and families in the Delta.

Handbook of Research on Lessons Learned From Transitioning to Virtual Classrooms During a Pandemic

In Spring 2020, many U.S. universities abruptly shifted to online course delivery in response to ... more In Spring 2020, many U.S. universities abruptly shifted to online course delivery in response to the quickly rising coronavirus cases. While these shifts impacted all students and faculty, they were particularly difficult for courses that had included community-based projects as assignments. This chapter examines the adjustments made for two courses with community-based projects. It explores how learning objectives were still met through virtual opportunities. The chapter also identifies challenges during the process. Faculty can use this knowledge to design community-based projects that include virtual options from the beginning.

Major Accomplishments/Contributions With revenues of over $1 billion per year, AARP is one of the most powerful nonprofit lobbying organizations in the United States. Its lobbying efforts have most impacted the health care public policy debates, and it was instrumental in lobbying Congress to pass the law creating Medicare Part D in 2003, which is a federal insurance program to subsidize prescription drug costs for Medicare recipients. AARP also conducts a wide variety of research, including polling and surveys, on various topics of elderly care issues relating to the over-50 population. Social media is increasing becoming a prominent tool in today’s nonprofit sector. By 2010, the la... more Social media is increasing becoming a prominent tool in today’s nonprofit sector. By 2010, the largest 200 nonprofit organizations in the United States used social media as a tool to meet their goals (Barnes, n.d.). According to those surveyed the top reason for using social media is for increasing awareness of the organization’s mission (90%). In studying the American Red Cross’ use of social media, Briones, et al. (2011) found that the use of social media built relationships with the public. This chapter explores the success of a mid-sized nonprofit organization, CHOICES: Memphis Center for Reproductive Health, as it develops a strategic social media plan to increase awareness and support for the organization. Through this case study, we will address how this organization has used social media to advance its mission and the process used to develop performance metrics along the way. This chapter explores the progression of a mid-sized nonprofit organization, the Central Brevard ... more This chapter explores the progression of a mid-sized nonprofit organization, the Central Brevard Humane Society (CBHS), as it embraces social media as part of its marketing and communications strategies. This case study explores how CBHS has used Facebook to advance its mission despite experiencing common challenges faced by nonprofit organizations when using social media. CBHS was able to overcome some of these issues through solutions and opportunities that can be used by other mid-sized nonprofit organizations to better integrate social media into their own marketing and communications strategies.
