We sought to determine the impact on patient visits, physician fee collections, and value of emergency department (ED) time at the primary PED after opening a nearby satellite PED. We also illustrate the spatial distribution of patient demographics and overlapping catchment areas for the primary and satellite PEDs using geographical information system. A structured, financial retrospective review was conducted. Aggregate patient demographic data and billing data were collected regarding physician fee charges, collections, and patient visits for both PEDs. All ED visits from January 2009 to December 2013 were analyzed. Geographical information system mapping using ArcGIS mapped ED patient visits. Patient visits at the primary PED were 53,050 in 2009 before the satellite PED opened. The primary PED visits increased after opening the satellite PED to 55,932 in 2013. The satellite P...

(1997) by empirically investigating the relationships between loan defaults, violation of loan covenants, going-concern opinions, and bankruptcy in bankruptcy prediction models. One objective of this study is to empirically test the ability of loan defaults/accommodations and loan covenant violations to assess the risk of bankruptcy. Another objective of this study is to investigate the impact of failing to control for these two distress events on results from tests of the usefulness of going-concern opinions in assessing bankruptcy risk. Results suggest that loan default/accommodation and loan covenant violation are both significant explanatory variables of bankruptcy at the time of the last annual report before the event. While a going-concern opinion variable appears to significantly explain bankruptcy, it is not significant when included in a model with loan default/accommodation and covenant violation ...

Development stage enterprises (DSEs), as defined by SFAS 7, are startup entities for which some publicly available information exists. New accounting standards have removed the DSE designation and related extra reporting requirements, and placed more responsibility on owners and managers to assess the ability of entities to continue as a going concern. We examined information from financial statements and audit reports of companies previously reporting as DSEs to investigate what increases the likelihood of receiving a going concern modification in auditors' opinions (GCO) and what affects audit fees. Our overall analyses indicate that the asset size of DSEs, negative working capital , and prior-year going concern modifications consistently influence going concern modifications to auditors' opinions. Managers should clearly consider these conditions when making their assessment of their companies' future going concern status. Our results indicate that the size of the audit firm did not influence the going concern modification decision, but Big4 auditors charge significantly higher fees than other auditors. Thus, managers/ owners of DSEs should weigh the benefits of having a Big4 firm audit on their financial statements against the higher fees charged by those firms.

Th... more This paper reports the results of a survey of CPAs, about half of whom are in public practice. The survey attempts to determine which applications and tools CPAs use most frequently, and their perceptions of future use of those applications and tools. Not surprisingly, spreadsheets and word processors are most widely used, followed by tax software. Beyond those basic applications, a substantial proportion of respondents reported regularly assessing controls and designing or modifying the design of accounting systems. Over 40 percent of respondents indicated that they used relational data base systems, while flowcharts remain a popular documentation tool. Respondents thought that the performance of all the tasks and use of all the applications would either increase or remain the same in the future. Relational data base systems had the greatest expected increase in future use. Survey results indicate that CPAs not in public practice use some different skills than those in public pract...

Using more recent data, this study examines whether the market continued to react positively to ERP announcements in light of negative publicity surrounding ERP implementations during 1999. Our evidence is less than conclusive than that found by the earlier study, but our data indicate that the market does still react positively to ERP announcements. We conclude that market participants still believed that the expected benefits exceeded the perceived risks associated with ERP implementation of large market share systems. The results of this study should be useful to managers seeking to increase their companies shareholder wealth.

In this regard, we used structural equations modeling to build and test a framework illustrating the impact of mentoring and career-related factors. Results indicate that fostering a mentoring environment within an organization can strengthen CMAs perceptions of their careers and employers. Mentoring has also been suggested to enhance womens opportunities to advance in organizations and help women break the glass ceiling. Analyses of data relating to compensation in 2007 and 2009 for a sample of female and male CEOs and operating performance of companies led by these CEOs for these years indicate that, that compensation gaps due to gender appear to be narrow...
