(Archer, 1998; Williams, 1999; Daniel, 2003) If this is the case, those students that could use the most assistance to improve academically are not receiving the most effective method of instruction when technology is integrated in the curriculum. Researchers have also determined that it is necessary to provide ongoing , site-based support and assistance in order for teachers to integrate effectively computer-based technology into the curriculum. Therefore, this paper will focus on the use of technology and technology pedagogy in urban schools, effective technology pedagogy, and suggest a model for professional development to integrate technology.

Census projects that by the year 2042 the racial minority will be the majority of the U. S. population. The Pew Research Center reported that white Americans would decrease from 85 percent of the population to 43 percent, while Black and Hispanic Americans will reach 45 percent of the population by 2060.1 with these statistics in mind, the client base across all health professions, including medicine and veterinary medicine, is changing. Results indicate that African Americans are an untapped resource of students interested in academic medicine as a career, while rural students are less attracted to this area.

Currently professional veterinary programs, similar to medical curricula, within the United States have no admission requirements for anatomy as a prerequisite course. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the impact of a week-long precourse in veterinary anatomy on both objective student performance and subjective student perceptions of the precourse educational methods. Incoming first year veterinary students in the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine professional curriculum were asked to participate in a free precourse before the start of the semester, covering the musculoskeletal structures of the canine thoracic limb. Students learned the material either via dissection only, instructor-led demonstrations only, or a combination of both techniques. Outcome measures included student performance on examinations throughout the first anatomy course of the professional curriculum as compared with those who did not participate in the precourse. This study found that those who participated in the precourse did significantly better on examinations within the professional anatomy course compared with those who did not participate. Notably, this significant improvement was also identified on the examination where both groups were exposed to the material for the first time together, indicating that exposure to a small portion of veterinary anatomy can impact learning of anatomical structures beyond the immediate scope of the material previously learned. Subjective data evaluation indicated that the precourse was well received and students preferred guided learning via demonstrations in addition to dissection as opposed to either method alone. Recently, there has been an increase in the number of high tech crimes by adolescents. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (2005), teens have gone high tech with old fashion bullying, stalking and spreading rumors. With the use of technology, students have advanced to cyberbullying and cyberstalking. Students are using e-mail, Websites, instant messaging, chat-rooms and text messaging to antagonize and intimidate others. Purpose: The primary purpose of this study was to explore middle and high school students' perceptions of deviant behavior when using computers and the Internet. Setting: South Louisiana school district with middle and high schools that had computers with Internet access. Study Sample: The accessible population included all students who attended a middle or high school in the East Baton Rouge Parish School Sys...

This required curricular restructuring, and resulted in faculty/student challenges. The effect of these stresses on student performance was studied. Methods: A pre-Katrina and post-Katrina comparative analysis of all Tulane medical students' performance on standardized exams, internal examination and United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) step exams was performed. A one-way analysis of variance was used to determine if mean examination scores differed from pre-Katrina to post-Katrina. Results: Internal exam-ination scores did not differ significantly. National standardized examination grades significantly decreased pre-Katrina to post-Katrina in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Medicine, Pediatrics and Psychiatry (P Ͻ 0.05). There was no statistical change in USMLE scores. Conclusions: Tulane students had a statistically significant decline in performance on many course and clerkship examinations, though overall performance on licensing examinations was unchanged. Many stresses may have affected students' ability to perform. KEY INDEXING TERMS: Disaster; Learning; Medical Students; Assessment. [Am J Med Sci 2008;336(2):142-146.]
