These two basic beliefs also stand in some tension with one another and generate the foundational paradoxes within which the Christian faith has come to expression. Theissen then briefly discusses fourteen core themes of Biblical religion—comparable to the pieces of a mobile, constantly in motion and touching one another—that establish a "family likeness" between the disparate documents of the Bible. These are creation, wisdom, miracle, alienation, hope, conversion, exodus, substitution, divine indwelling, faith, love, status reversal, judgment, and justification. From this foundation, Theissen sets the Bible in dialogue with contemporary secular culture and the major religions of the world, and explores its place in the dialogues between Protestantism and Catholicism, fundamentalism, and social moralism. By significantly abridging the German original, this English edition makes Theissen's argument accessible to a wider audience. Some readers may yearn to see how aspects of the argument that could only be sketched in this edition are more fully developed in the German. Even in its shortened form, however, the book offers both an appeal to non-Christians to read the Bible sympathetically and fresh paradigms through which Christians may bring the Bible into fruitful dialogue with a challenging and complex world.
