I'm going to see Professor Dumbledore about House Elf Appreciation Day (HEAD, for those who like acronyms) next Monday, and I'd like to take a petition to the Headmaster showing the support for the idea.

"What", you ask, "is House Elf Appreciation Day?" Well, I will tell you. The idea is to have a school holiday - attend: this means no classes - honoring all the work house elves do for us at Hogwarts, on some Wednesday later this year. Wednesday, mainly because it is under-represented as holidays go. It's worth noting that this would be a holiday for the students and professors and not required of the house elves, since it would be wrong of us to appreciate their work by forcing them not to do any. This holiday is also in no way connected to Hermoine Granger's Society for the Promotion of Elvish Welfare and does not endorse any opinion on the "liberation" of house elves.

Why do we need House Elf Appreciation Day? Because Hogwarts would collapse, and your lives would be terrible messes, if not for the tireless work of house elves in the background. They make our meals. They clean our sheets. They pick up the ten day old used blood lollipop Kevin left in a common room chair. But do we give them a moments thought or thanks? At the least these noble workers on whom we all depend deserve a day where we say "Thank you Mordenkainen or whatever your name is." The other nice thing about HEAD is that this would be a school holiday on a Wednesday when we are all tired out from copious amounts of Potions homework the night before and there's nothing wrong with that, is there?

So what I need you to do is this: sign the petition and if you can, get others to sign it too. I will have a stack of petitions with me at breakfast and all other times. You can come and sign or take with you for others to sign. I can't reach all the younger years and houses other than Ravenclaw, and you can, putting these petitions up in your common room, dorm room, bathroom or thrusting them onto first years. Turn these other petitions into me by lunch on Monday so I can show them to Dumbledore. All it takes is a few seconds and you can make a change for the better at Hogwarts.

Please note that if you try to get signatures from the younger years, intimidation or threats are not allowed. I can't present to Dumbledore any signatures I knew were obtained with less than perfectly legitimate means.
