i am really glad that i just found this community... i have always known that i wanted to work either in conservation or directly with animals, and i have always had a strong pull towards marine work. Through my college, i signed up for a trip to Maui to study and track Humpback whales (amazing...) for two weeks. it includes all of the tedious stuff but also all of the wonderful photography and hands on experiences. I am so excited. In case anyone is interested (they also have a dolphin program) i am going through the Dolphin Institute in Hawaii, which im sure most of you are familiar with... or if any of you have been there let me know what you thought : p Anyway, i just got back from Marineland, which i wasn't entirely thrilled with but i did get to feed/touch an Orca which was AMAZING... i got great pictures... and just watching the trainers with the animals really made my desire to work with marine mammals alot stronger. The problem for me now is... I live in New York State, smack in the middle. There is not really anywhere to go to study this field or get internships. I work at our local zoo, but its very small and basic. I would love to hear people's experiences with internships and schools for this, and how the job of marine mammal trainer is. I have talked with some in the past but not for long so i would love it if you gujys could help me out! thanks so much
