I just downloaded Ventura and so far, like most recent MacOS upgrades, I'm not feeling the sense of "New" I did in the old days. Sure, there are new features, but the OS feels and looks basically the same. This is probably a good thing, but I remember the days when a new MacOS was exciting.

Upgrading from 10.4 I have a MacBook running 10.4 and would like to upgrade it to 10.6 - mainly for the ability to open .ODT files but also for some other more recent software.
Looking on the AppleStore site I see an upgrade from 10.5 but not from 10.4, and I'm sure there used to be an upgrade involving iWork (which I don't really want to pay extra for - I use the applications I already have!)
Any advice on a 10.4 >10.6 upgrade path?
Thanks

My Mac ate my album. (x-posted to appleworld) I just put a CD inside my MacBook Pro, and for some reason it isn't showing up in iTunes or my Desktop. Could it be:

- that I've been using the "CD thing" (I can't believe I don't know what to call it) more than usual lately because I've been importing music into iTunes and I might've overused it?

- that it's a CD-R and not an actual album (most of my CDs have been like that so far), so the quality is cheaper and it's not reading as well?

- that I just need to restart my computer?

I also tried "Eject Disc" but nothing's happening. My laptop is not even a year old. What do I do?

ETA: Problem solved! A restart did the trick :) I'll keep this post up just in case anyone else has this problem, though.

iTunes can't load I am not able to connect to iTunes store through iTunes because it is like taking forever to load. I tried repairing and verifying the keychain but that is not helping at all. I'm using OS X 10.6. Does anyone know how to solve this issue? Thanks

Help! (x-posted) I upgraded to Snow Leopard yesterday, and since then, I have had some major problems I cannot figure out.

First, I cannot use "Save" or "Save As" in Photoshop (CS3) without the program immediately crashing. I have reinstalled CS3, I have reinstalled Snow Leopard, I have repaired the startup disk from the install DVDs, I have zapped the pram, repaired permissions, deleted the Photoshop preference files... everything I could think of, and it still crashes every time I try to save.

Second, though not as important, it is still frustrating. I use one of the photo screen savers, the one where it takes photos from one of my folders and drops them on the desktop one by one in a random order and eventually fills up the screen, then keeps "throwing" more photos on top, endlessly. Now, (and this is happening on all three of my computers), the screen saver works fine for a time, but then it restarts from the beginning and then only shows one or two photos before restarting again. This is not as important as the Photoshop issue, but I would still like to resolve it.

Any suggestions?

That was WEIRD Not an OS X complaint but Mac-related... I just told iTunes to make me a Genius list based on "It's All I Can Do" by the Cars and it obliged gladly and began playing. Then when I went back to the list to save it, Genius was saying "Genius makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together" and there was no list of songs. The Genius list I had just made was still happily playing along, but where from I have no idea. Even when I select "Show Current Song" it takes me back to the Genius advertising page. So very very weird.

So I find "It's All I Can Do" again and iTunes cheerfully informs me there is no Genius information for "It's All I Can Do" by the Cars; would I like to update my Genius information?

Well, sixty-eight thousand tracks, that's gonna take a while. I'll let y'all know what happens.

iPhoto or my camera? (posted to apple_world as well) Alright, so I have a Canon Powershot SD 360 Camera. The last time I uploaded pics onto iPhoto must've been sometime in April.

There are 54 photos that I have uploaded onto iPhoto that are now deleted off my camera and have been for some time. When I try to upload pics now, it says that I can't upload any new ones from my camera because iPhoto doesn't recognize it.

I get something like:

Unreadable Files: 54

The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognizable file type or the files may not contain valid data.)

Example of the files that show up: /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/iPhoto/IMG_1643.JPG

When I click "Okay", the import option shuts off and won't allow me to upload the new pictures I have on my camera.

So, my question is... does this problem have to do with iPhoto or my camera? I have an older version of iPhoto on a very old laptop, but I never had a problem until now. If it's my camera... I sure hope I don't have to delete any of my pictures. That would be most unfortunate. :(

Anyone think they might have a clue?

spelling check I don't have anything against US english but does anyone know how to switch the US spell-checker to the British one in Mac OX S. It's quite annoying to be told that the spelling is misspelt when clearly it isn't. Thanks

mic line-in I'm currently using a macbook, running leopard OX S. Recently, I bought a headset with a mic attached so that I will be able to do video chat with my friends on skype or iChat. I don't want to use the inbuilt microphone because I want to minimize the background sound disturbance. But I am not able to get the line-in mic to work. It works fine on my PC and not my macbook. Is there such thing as compatibility..i mean between mac and headset with mic?

Name that app! I thought I read about an app in Mac Apper or in MacUpdate, but now I can't find it: I'm looking for an application or preference pane that searches for screensavers for me. I swore I just read about an application that does this only a few days ago, but now when I check the usual places, I can't find anything about screensavers, let alone something that does this. Any ideas?

iTunes question. If I need to redirect this to another comm, let me know; I couldn't see a comm specifically devoted to iTunes...

Anyone know a way to get iTunes to show you all the songs in your collection that were purchased from the Store, i.e. "protected," as opposed to mp3s ripped from your CD collection? I tried to find "file type" so I could sort by that, but there doesn't seem to be a selection for file type. I'm just interested in seeing what I've got that's rights-protected and what's not. Thanks for advice.

Which is better? Hey guys, I asked a question about this earlier, but I just wanted opinions on this.

I have an old iBook G4, about 4 years old. It has almost 30 GB of memory. PowerPC, not Intel. I can't install Adobe Flash Player because it only installs on 10.4 and I have 10.3.9. I also just got one of those Flip video cameras (?) for Christmas, but it won't work unless I have 10.5.

I'm wondering at this point: should I get an upgrade for my current Mac (which will take 5-6 GB of space up) or is it better just to get a whole new laptop already? Maybe some people can share their experiences...? Hopefully? Thanks :) I have no idea what to do and I'm currently in limbo here, haha.

P.S. Anyone know where I can get an earlier version of Adobe? It sucks not being able to watch TV episodes online :(

LJ Backup? I just got a MacBook after my HP laptop died. I'd backed up my journal and a community I created before it crashed but I can't find a program to do the same on my Mac. On the HP, I used this to backup my entries.

Does anyone know of a LJ backup program that works on the Mac OS? Thanks, any help is much appreciated.

Adobe Flash Player/Plug-in Hey guys, I'm new here :)

I'm an idiot when it comes to downloading software, so here's my problem: I have an iBook G4 that's pretty old. Lately I can't watch TV episodes online (at least on the ABC and NBC sites) 'cause I don't have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player or whatever it is. I just tried to access the ABC site, which gave me directions on how to download the latest version. So I start to download it, but then it gives me a message that it can only install on Macs 10.4 (?) or higher and not any earlier versions. :(

So... what does this mean? System upgrade? Time to get a new laptop? What should I do? The Mac software site and download.com doesn't really help in this matter.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Die, Spotlight, DIE I've just upgraded a 1.25GHz MDD Mac to Leopard, and it's lovely. But I have two 500GB external hard drives full of media and I DO NOT WANT Spotlight to index them. Is there a way to tell Spotlight to go f*ck itself as regards those two volumes? Frankly I don't care if I shut it off completely, I think it's useless, but if there's a way to just tell it to ignore those two discs, that'd be fine. Thanks for advice.

EDIT: Dragged 'em into the Privacy window in the Spotlight control panel. Think I'm all good!
