As mentioned, I have set up the new machine and have been trying to get the thread to catch again. I've managed to get the stitching to be fairly regular, but the top thread keeps snapping on me after maybe a dozen stitches. I've traces the path of the thread and nothing seems to be catching/snagging it, as that tends to be the problem. So I am wondering if the timing of the mechanisms can somehow affect this, as I have been adjusting the catch mechanism and the depth of the needle shaft [I doubt those are the actual terms, as the machine came with no manual, but I hope I am articulating my point].
...sometimes I wonder if a course in sewing machine repair might be worth while....

I'm no newbie to sewing or wrestling with my sewing machine,... but Im stumped!
Im finishing up a heavy project, and using my Signature model URR-288, which is a machine I got for free and know absolutely nothing about except that its a late 1950s, early 60s model, is a straight-stitch machine only, and works very fast and efficiently,... usually.
It was working fine, sewing through 6 layers (two medium weight canvas, two fleece, two flannel) with medium weight thread and size 18 needle... until I got excited, started helping the feeding feet, by pulling alittle too fast, the needle bent then broke.
Fine. Replace the needle and continue....
Except now, I can't get the machine to set a single stitch in my fabric! The top thread either breaks within a few stitches OR it will not catch the bobbin thread at all.
I tried playing with my top and bottom tension, switching out needles (in case the eye was just sharp), cleaning out fluff from under the throat plate, filing a burr from the throatplate from when the needle glanced off and broke...
Its the same thread, same size needle, and same thickness of fabric as was being sewed before, easily and happily... only now, it wont set a single stitch and I am at my wits end!
I dont want to switch machines to finish the project, I have a 1957 Singer model 401A, which needs a tune-up DESPERATELY before its run for too long again, plus its a slower machine that needs adjusted CONSTANTLY to keep tension..
Any help? Ideas? Tips?

hi, i was wondering if anyone could tell me what type of images can be used on the Janome memory craft 300E? and where the USB port is, if it has one? Also is there a maximum size the image can be?

Hey Im a newbie and I looked thru some of the older posts, but couldnt find my problem anywhere. I cleaned and oiled my Brother vx-1120 sewing maching according to directions, I adjusted the tension and both top and bottom are threaded correctly. But the thread is still bunching under the foot from the bobbin. Just some history, the machine went unused for a while (3 years), then i started using it again no problems, until like 6 months ago when the bobbin thread started bunching. Its driving me NUTS, i feel like trashing the entire machine. Any suggestions??

The Knitting and stitching shows held in Alexander Palace London Uk in October 12th - 16th and in Harrogate Yorkshire UK in November 23rd - 26th are also brilliant for sewers , hand and machine. And the majority of sewing machine manufacturers are represented there. see www.twistedthread.com for more info. The show they held for the first time in NEC Birmingham uk was really good. Twisted thread (creative exhibitions) always put on quality shows with plenty of stands and exhibitions to wet the appetite.

Hello. I am new to the community and sewing in general. I just got my first sewing machine (a Brother CS 6000) and will be starting a sewing class tomorrow. I read through my manual and figured out how to thread the machine, but that is as far as I have gotten. I have a pattern that I was going to try to use, but when I opened it up, I felt a little overwhelmed. Are there any good resources anyone can recommend to help someone learn how to sew? Like I said, I am completely new to this. I am sure the class will help some, but I am looking for additional help. Websites, book recommendations, anything.

I am a new sewer. I have a itty bitty White "Sew Cute" but it's kinda cheaply made and it's not capable of doing much. I'd like to buy a sewing machine that's capable of sewing on different fabrics and doing different stitches but not so complicated I can't use it. I'd say around 200 dollars is my limit. Not much I know but I'm a preschool teacher and university student so not much money. My mom has a Pfaff but otherwise I really know nothing about brands.

Greetings everyone!
I am in the market for a new machine, specifically a Pfaff (I'm a Pfaff pfreak).
I was wondering if any of you have experience with the Pfaff Selectline. Comments? Likes? Dislikes?
I currently use a Pfaff 362 - it has really served me well, but no longer satisfies my desires. I love doing heirloom sewing, so I am looking for stitches which can be used with a wing needle for hemstitching. The machine also has to be strong, since the majority of my work is in corsetry.
The Pfaff Performance is definitely the cat's ass, but is a bit out of my price range. I also would prefer something which is no computerized.
I would really enjoy hearing your comments and recommendations!
