What happened to the website? Are ya'll not doing this anymore?Neither http://www.madewithlovebyaliberal.info nor http://www.madewithlovebyaliberal.org/ appear to be up. (Well, the .info site looks like it got bought by some German spammers, but the .org site still belongs to Kathryn and it isn't expired or nuthin - I just get a "server not found" error.) _3:41 pm_[kathrynt] OK now we can do something, y'all. Herehttp://heartkeepercommonroom.blogspot.com/2005/09/katrina-disaster-relief.htmlis a list of places that urgently need supplies TODAY. I just called the United Methodist Church in Leesville and they need baby blankets A S A P; I'm sure there are dozens of others. Google "Katrina Shelter" and see what you come up with. Do call before you send things, as needs may change hour by hour or day by day. The need is urgent, and critical. Get those needles to flying, folks. (2 Comments |Comment on this)
_11:13 am_[domestinatrix] What can we do to help Hurricane Katrina victims? OK, so people along the Gulf Coast don't necessarily need warm hats and bulky sweaters in September, plus i haven't heard yet that there's even any good way to bring in and distribute donated items to that area at this time. Right now the people stuck there need food and water and a place to be clean and dry. But later, when G-d willing people are starting to get back on their feet and trying to carry on with as much of their normal lives as they can, they're going to need stuff. Imagine that you've had to evacuate your city with just what you could grab on short notice. Maybe, G-d forbid, by the time you can return to your home, there's really nothing left there. You'd need so much, including blankets and clothing. We don't currently have a partner organization set up to distribute to that area, but we all know that knitting (and crocheting and sewing) takes some time. If we start making things now, we can find one or more agencies there for you to send your finished items to. If you have any suggestions of who would be capable of accepting our donations and distributing to people in need of what we can provide, please let us know. (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_11:06 am_[crowjane] Charity Item This site has instructions to knit leprosy bandages and an address to mail them too. They look like an easy knit, and they can be crocheted too. I'm no expert on leprosy, but it look like these bandages are very useful. (Comment on this)

_12:09 pm_[domestinatrix] We’ve been rotten at updating this lately. If you’ll be at the Black Sheep Gathering in Eugene, Oregon this Saturday, please find us and introduce yourself. We’re not camping down there this year, so we sadly won’t be able to offer you a nice cuppa tea, but we’d love to meet more of you and tell you what we’ve been up to with the Project.I’m short, not so big, and have long dark hair and glasses. kathrynt is short, bigger, and has short dark hair. emmacrew is taller, bigger, and has medium-length dark hair and glasses. We’ll be there with perclexed, boojum, and hopefully kightp. We’ll be carrying Made with Love by a Liberal canvas tote bags and occasionally passing back and forth our ceramic eyeball and smelling salts. We answer to our regular names E, Kathryn, and Emma, or to our full LJ names. (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_6:21 pm_[domestinatrix] Lincoln's Birthday Knit-In [Ballard, WA] _(cross posted from my LJ)_The Made with Love by a Liberal Association will be holding another glorious knit-in at http://www.neighborhoodcafe.org on Saturday February 12th from 2:30 pm until about 7:30 pm. Yes it's called a knit-in, there will also be crocheting, sewing and quilting involved. To take advantage of the location, an assortment of vegetarian Moroccan appetizers will be sponsored by the madebyaliberal board of directors (if you can kick in a few bucks towards food, that would be much appreciated but not mandatory).A big focus of the day will be knitting and crocheting 8” squares to be sewn together into afghans for local domestic violence shelters, but we’ll also have patterns and supplies for various other projects including the official Made with Love by a Liberal Layette, the 5-hour baby sweater, some lovely patchwork squares that need to be turned into a quilt, a number of nearly finished knit items that need to be sewn together, and lots of finished items that just need labels sewn into them. It’s a great opportunity to either hang out with good people making things you already know you enjoy making, or learn new mad skillz such as increasing & decreasing, reading simple patterns, making baby booties, and the ever popular promoting our social agenda and improving the greater community while indulging in our favorite crafts.Bring your knitting needles, crochet hooks, sewing needles, tapestry needles, washable yarn, sizable fabric remnants, and quilt batting remnants, or use the donated materials and loaner tools we’ll have there. We welcome with open arms any yarn from your stash that you’d never use otherwise (as long as it’s 100% machine washable). If it’s in your budget to buy some new yarn for the cause, there are various cheap yarns readily available at any craft store that can all make nice warm blankies to give comfort to people who are cold and afraid. Not to endorse specific brands or stores, but we're currently pretty excited JoAnn Fabrics carrying the Caron One Pound in lots of colors – it’s only $5 for 16 ounces of yarn that doesn’t suck. We do currently have a healthy donated stash to work from, so the only critical thing to bring is your own 2 hands.Everyone is welcome no matter what you think your skill level is.Even if you don’t really knit, crochet, or sew, anyone dexterous enough tie their own shoes can help sew squares together. If you could let me know by the end of this week if you think you’ll be there, that would be a great help for planning (especially for food), but you should still come even if you can’t respond ahead of time. Please post here or e-mail spygirle (at) livejournal (dot) com with “Knit-In” in the title of your e-mail because sometimes I get a little too excited with the delete button. _4:45 pm_[kathrynt] Another place to give No matter where you are, if you are in the United States, you have something like Washington's Department of Health and Human Services. In WA, this parent organization deals with both Child Protective Services and the Department on Aging. Children's services, sadly, is constantly, constantly in need of baby clothes and blankets for babies who are in the position of the one I mentioned last week. (Who is home, over his skin infections, healing from his kidney infection, and gaining weight.) Elder care services are in constant need of shawls, slippers, and lap robes; many elders suffer from poor circulation or lessened mobility, and desperately need the extra help to stay warm. One skein of Lion Brand Pound of Love can make 2 baby layette sets, if I've done my math right, consisting of a hat, a pair of booties, and a 5 Hour Baby Sweater. Three skeins (Well, two and a half) of Lion Brand Homespun makes a wonderful knit or crochet shawl or lap robe. Many craft and fabric stores will give you a discount if you're doing work for charity, and as soon as we finish with the paperwork, we can give you tax ID #'s so that you can avoid having to pay sales tax. I can tell you from personal experience that there is nothing like watching a baby get carried off with warm toes because of you.As always, let me know if you need more information, or labels, or help contacting your local agency. _9:51 pm_[domestinatrix] Flyers They're not fancy, but we do now have flyers available. To be as easy as possible to e-mail, print and copy, they're a single color, 1-page Word document with no graphics. There's some white space on them if you'd like to write in your own favorite quotes about liberal charity crafting, and it'd be really easy to edit out our national mailing address to add in information about local knit-ins. They're suitable for posting on church/coffee shop/LYS bulletin boards, handing out, forwarding electronically, or even leaving a stack up by the register of your favorite sympathetic crafty supplier.Respond here or e-mail us at madewithlovebyaliberal(at)gmail(dot)com if you'd like one e-mailed to you. _10:33 am_[kathrynt] In which the abstract becomes concrete Made With Love by a Liberal had occasion to give out our first donations yesterday.A friend of a friend was informed yesterday that her nineteen-year-old son was finally willing to relinquish custody of his badly neglected eight-month-old son to her. The social worker who called said that it would be good if someone could be there within the hour to get the baby, before the parents changed their minds. Since the FOAF lives in Florida and the baby is here in Washington, my friend Cheryl ran to go get him. When she picked up the baby, he had literally nothing. No clothes, no extra diapers, no bottle, no nothing. The social service agency loaned her a carseat to get him home. He was wearing a diaper and a three-year-old's coat that was safety-pinned together at the bottom. Now, we have mild winters here, but it's still November. Cheryl knows about MWLbaL, and figured me for having some baby stuff I could give her -- and so I did.The baby has booties, a hat, and a quilt to wrap up in now. Whatever else happens to him in the rest of his life, his toes are warm today. The importance of what we're doing here really struck home. (10 Comments |Comment on this)

_12:52 pm_[kathrynt] Good News! I just spoke to the coordinator for the Box Project, and they are VERY excited about working with us. They distribute gifts in kind (like the stuff we make) all over the country. They work with the poorest of the poor communities, and there is always more need than they can fill. They need EVERYTHING, but particularly baby gear. They serve a few communities in desperately cold areas, and so are willing to take wool items to send to people in South Dakota and Maine -- just label them first for their wool content, to make sure it gets where it needs to go.They might put us in their national newsletter. How cool is that? Anyway, if you're looking for a place to send stuff, I say check 'em out. (2 Comments |Comment on this)

_7:34 pm_[violentecstasy] Thanks, guys! I just got my labels in the mail, and they're beautiful. I'm very excited to get knitting on stuff (although it's not likely to happen until after the holidays), and I know my knitting group is as well. A few weeks ago a local women's help hotline held a benefit we all knitted for, and we're already planning for next year. These labels will be perfect for that and all the other things in between (hopefully we'll need to make some more labels before then, though!). I'm excited that whatever we choose to do will be part of a bigger whole, represented by the lovely labels. Thanks again! Current Mood: excited (3 Comments |Comment on this)
_9:36 am_[emmacrew] Hello new members! We've had a sizeable influx of new folks over the holiday weekend. Welcome! We're glad to have you! We noticed a few places where we'd been mentioned, but we're always curious how people find us. If it was by an interesting path, please let us know!I present to you a photo ( from our knit-inCollapse ) We netted one complete blankie, most of another, some quilts, a bunch of hats and booties. A good time was had by all. We're planning on having Seattle-area knit-ins once a month or so; the next is planned for the weekend of Martin Luther King's birthday. If you want to have a get-together in your area as well, tell us about it! We're in the process of adding an events page to the web site and we'd love to be able to include some events in other parts of the country. (1 Comment |Comment on this)

_11:00 am_[kathrynt] First Annual Black Friday MWLbaL Knit-In SUCCESS! So about eight of us got together and knitted, crocheted, ate, and joined for about ten straight hours. At the end of it, we had a baby / kid blankie, two kid quilts, enough squares almost for another blankie, multiple baby hats, multiple baby booties, and one complete set of socks / hat mittens that is so cute I really want to eat it. Not bad for a day's work! Anybody else do charity knitting yesterday? (4 Comments |Comment on this)

_1:36 pm_[domestinatrix] cafepress update - now with stuff! check this outCoffee mugs, tote bags and pins are now available. The quote on the back of some items is:"If by a 'Liberal' they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind; someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions; someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad; if that is what they mean by a 'Liberal,' then I'm proud to say I'm a 'Liberal.'" (John F. Kennedy)The sale of these items goes to benefit... well, no one but cafepress, but at least it means we can get cool stuff quickly. Purchase of these items does not benefit Made with Love by a Liberal in any direct way other than providing the purchaser with a useful conversation piece and a reasonable promotional opportunity.Labels to sew onto finished items that you distribute yourselves are now available directly from us. We plan to send out the first batches of them from the Black Friday Knit In this weekend. (5 Comments |Comment on this)

_1:23 pm_[domestinatrix] Cafepress We're setting up a Cafepress store to order Made with Love by a Liberal stuff because, well, we want to at least have some for ourselves.Would y'all be interested in ordering items from them yourself? If so, what would you most like to see? We were thinking probably at least canvas totebags and coffee mugs, but they can make all kinds of other stuff if we ask them to. I'm pretty sure they make those cute little metal lunch box club purses. If you did want to order stuff, would you want it to have some sort of logo on it or just words? We're putting out the word for possible logos if you have any suggestions. Also, don't forget we'd love to see you at the Black Friday Knit In for those of you who are within driving distance of Snohomish, WA. _12:12 pm_[kathrynt] Local chapters? SOMEone in Ohio said she was interested in starting an Ohio chapter of MWLbaL. And I believe someone in another state said the same thing. But I've lost track of it, my brain is small and overworked (smell the smoke?)So, put it here. Who wants to start a local chapter? This is distinct from working with the Washington chapter, in that a local chapter is going to be responsible for buying their own labels, finding their own charities, etc., and the National Chapter (uhhh, me & domestinatrix & emmacrew) may, from time to time, hit up a local chapter for $10 to help us cover postage costs. The requirements are pretty small; basically, register with your state's Secretary of State as a charitable org (I can walk you through this) using our Employer Identification Number, don't do anything to screw up our non-profit status, and don't behave like jerks. Stuff that screws up our non-profit status is endorsing a candidate, political party, or piece of legislation; it does NOT include agitating for causes, as long as no candidate, party, or specific piece of legislation is invoked. And all this, of course, applies to the organization, not to the actions of individuals.Oh! and I'll need a physical address and an email address to put on the website. It's not a trivial amount of work; so far, I've been doing something every single day in the service of this cause. But it's not a 40 hour a week job either. It would probably entail, I'm guessing, a half-hour to an hour of work, three to five times a week. So! Let me know if you want to take this particular leap of faith. We're flying this by the seat of our pants, so I'm going to be learning with you. Let's hope it's not a bumpy ride.
