I have seen so many of those glitter calming jars for kids around the internet lately, and my first reaction is always, “But I want one for ME!” The swirling glitter in the jars is meant to focus the child’s attention to help them calm down and breathe. This is something from which I too could benefit, and I have a feeling there are others who are the same. However, some adults might feel silly having a big mason jar of glitter sitting on their desks. (Not me, of course. My desk is always covered in glitter and glue strings.) If you work in a professional setting, I get why it might be weird. Nobody is going to bat an eye if you decorate your desk with a snow globe though. This calming jar is disguised, so you can keep this snow globe calming jar out in the open without shame.

WHAT YOU NEED TO MAKE A SNOW GLOBE GLITTER CALM JAR

You can find all of the supplies to make this project at the dollar store before Christmas. If you are planning this project at other times of the year, you can find plastic snow globes online or in craft stores fairly easily.

• hot water
• corn syrup
• fine white, teal, and holo silver glitter
• course white iridescent glitter
• glitter tape
• scissors

HOW TO MAKE A DOLLAR STORE GLITTER SNOW GLOBE

This short video will show you how to put together your own snow globe calm jar. I chose not to add a decoration inside of the globe because I thought it would distract from the calming glitter, but you can easily superglue a small figurine to the base of the globe to create a traditional-looking snow globe.

Dollar Store Glitter Snow Globe Calm Jar

1. Unscrew the lid of the plastic snow globe and remove the water-tight insert.
2. Fill the globe 2/3 full of hot water.
3. Add in 2-3 tsp of light corn syrup.
   You can eyeball the amount. The corn syrup adds viscosity to the water so that the glitter doesn’t settle as quickly.
4. Replace the water-tight insert and screw on the lid of the snow globe.
5. Shake to combine the corn syrup and the water.
6. Reopen the snow globe and add water until the globe is nearly full.
7. Add in 1-2 T of glitter.
   Consider mixing different colors, sizes, and shapes of glitter!
8. Replace the water-tight insert and screw on the lid of the snow globe again.
9. Shake to disperse the glitter.
10. If needed, reopen the globe to remove bubbles or excess glitter.
11. Ensure that the globe is tightly sealed, then decorate the base of the snow globe with glitter tape or ribbon.

Now all that is left to do is to shake the snow globe and watch the glitter gently swirl and settle. If you need a moment of mindfulness during the day, give the globe a shake and allow yourself the time to take some deep, calming breaths until the glitter has completely settled.
