Valence of musical emotions and its laterality evoked by instrumental Indian music has been exami... more Valence of musical emotions and its laterality evoked by instrumental Indian music has been examined using well-established model of frontal regional activation of emotions as a theoretical framework. A sample of forty-one subjects given piece of instrumental Indian classical music, and Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals recorded before and during listening to the music. All participants divided into two groups of appreciator and non-appreciator based upon their feedback given by them at the end of the recording session, noted by rating to the music given by the subjects used in the study. Using Fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm power in the theta band at frontal region was calculated. It has been found out significant increase in frontal midline theta power in appreciator left brain when compared to the right. Moreover, significant decrease in frontal midline theta power in non-appreciator's left hemisphere. These findings and comparison with psychometric data provided by subjects reveals positive or pleasant emotions evoked by instrumental Indian classical music are processed by left frontal region. And activation and non-activation of frontal left lobe depends upon Subject being an appreciator or non-appreciator of music. Hence, supporting established finding in Indian population for appreciation of Indian Classical Music. Moreover, processing of music by the brain is beyond the realms of culture.

Pigmentary disorders have psychological impact as well as impact on well-being and body image. The quality of life is affected adversely in both vitiligo and melasma patients, but psychosocial factors at work are different, Aim: To assess and compare quality of life, self-esteem, depression and socio-demographic variables in patients of vitiligo and melasma. Methodology: 50 consecutive patients each of vitiligo and melasma were interviewed in the Dermatology clinic. WHO QOL-BREF, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale & Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale were used for interview. Data obtained was analysed using statistical tests. Results: The mean age was 34.8 (±13.34) & 39.78 (±7.65) years for patients of vitiligo & melasma respectively. The mean duration of illness was 8.04 (±7.95) years in Vitiligo and 4.36 (±4.15) years in melasma. 36% of vitiligo patients had changed their physician more than twice when compared to only 8% patients of melasma. Only 40% Melasma patients perceived it to be a major ailment, whilst 70% of Vitiligo patients reported it to be a major ailment and the difference was statistically significant (P-0.03). Female patients of vitiligo had significantly worse quality of life and self-esteem than female melasma patients. Depression was significantly worse in vitiligo patients. Conclusion: Vitiligo has a more negative psychological impact especially on female patients than melasma.

Cognitive and hedonic deficits persist even in remission and affect the quality of life in patients with depression and schizophrenia. The study aims to compare cognition, anhedonia and its impact on quality of life in patients with depression and schizophrenia. Methods: We interviewed 50 consecutive consenting clinically stable patients with schizophrenia (BPRS score < 31) and depressive episode (HDRS score < 08) following up in psychiatry OPD. Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was used to assess cognition, Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) for anhedonia and WHOQOL-BREF for the quality of life in participants. Results: The mean age of patients with schizophrenia was 41.1±9.79 years and that for patients with the Depressive episode was 44.68±10.32 years. Cognition in schizophrenia patients was significantly worse (P= 0.001) and anhedonia was better (P= 0.002) than depression, whereas the quality of life was comparable. In Schizophrenia group MoCA and SHAPS scores had a negative correlation (P= 0.034). The quality of life had significant negative correlation with anhedonia in schizophrenia as well as depression patients. Conclusion: Schizophrenia patients have higher deficits in cognition and depression sees higher hedonic deficit when compared despite being clinical stable and comparable quality of life. Anhedonia impairs quality of life in patients with depression as well as schizophrenia patients but same can't be concluded about the cognitive deficit in depression.

Social relationship variables are linked to health. We investigated the social relationship variables and SNS use among medical students. Methods: After institutional ethics committee approval, we invited 150 random undergraduate medical students and 150 postgraduate resident doctors from a medical college. Regular SNS users were included and those suffering from any psychiatric or chronic medical condition were excluded from the study. Of all the invited individuals, 104 undergraduates (56 females and 48 males) and 103 postgraduates (50 females and 53 males) consented for study. Results: Facebook was the most commonly and regularly used SNS in our study sample. Daily average time spent by participants on SNS was 40 minutes. Mean number of SNS friends of undergraduates was 150 and of postgraduates was 143. Undergraduate medical students reported an average of 49 friends living locally and 74 friends living at a distance; postgraduate resident doctors reported average 80 friends living locally and 325 friends living at a distance. Undergraduates sought attention more frequently than postgraduates by posting photos to SNS. Postgraduates had their recreation and academics were more affected due to SNS than undergraduates. Number of SNS friends had no association with social integration, social support or social stress. Conclusions: SNS may hamper the curricular as well as recreational activities of medicos, especially postgraduate resident doctors. The number of SNS friends is independent of a medico's social integration and may not be associated with social support and social stress.

Quantitative spectral analysis of an EEG scan has been used to assess the biological basis of emotional disorders such as depression as well as to investigate biomarkers of affective disorders. Inter-hemispheric asymmetries in both baseline and stimulus-evoked frequencies (alpha, beta, theta, and delta) are potential biomarkers of depression. The role of frontal alpha asymmetry has been established, but other spectral frequencies such as frontal theta remain elusive. We compared the hemispheric differences in frontal theta power in depressed patients and controls before and during listening to music to study the correlation of frontal theta asymmetry with depression. Methods: To determine whether stimulus-evoked frontal theta asymmetry is a biomarker of depression, we compared 23 patients with mild depression (based on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale) with 17 age-and sex-matched controls by conducting EEG at rest and after listening to Indian classical music. Results: In controls without depression, the mean frontal theta power of the left hemisphere and frontal theta asymmetry increased significantly during music listening. In depressed patients, frontal theta asymmetry was reversed during music listening. Conclusion: Frontal theta asymmetry is a potential biomarker of depression.
Online social networking is a fastest growing medium for connecting people with each other defyin... more Online social networking is a fastest growing medium for connecting people with each other defying the physical barrier. The social networking can be a good support system to some of its users and help them get over their fear and anxieties of social interaction. Despite that it has a great potential for developing into an addicting behavior and this addicting behavior has similar implication as any chemical dependence syndrome. There is research which suggests that self esteem and personality of the users determine the way an individual uses the online social networking and it is suggested that use of social networking sites may be associated with depression. The link between depression and online social networking is complex and requires further study. Online social networking is a thing which has to cause as well as prevent mental health emergencies such as deliberate self harm and suicide. It is a tool which needs to be handled carefully and can be rewarding if done so.

She also had complains of multiple aches and pain on and off during this period. On detailed enquiry with the family members, her belching would continue throughout the day but would stop when distracted with neutral conversations. She had consulted a physician and subsequently was referred to a gastroenterologist, and was prescribed two weeks of proton pump inhibitor empirically without any significant improvement in symptoms. Her upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was done and results were unremarkable. Psychiatry consultation was sought after eight months of persistent symptoms. Though she didn't improve with treatment, her appetite was normal and no weight loss was reported. She had difficulty in onset of sleep due to preoccupation about the stressor. There was no dysphasia, and she would not have any belch during sleep. The sadness of mood and helplessness was reported on enquiry but no suicidal ideation and hopelessness was observed. The start of belching could be traced to the stressors of death of her mother in law and marriage of her daughter (to both of them patient was attached emotionally) but patient attribute it to the physical illness (pyrexia of unknown origin) she had eight months back. She was having good interpersonal relationship with all her family member but since death of her mother in law there were verbal disputes between her and her sister in laws on trivial issues. She is described to be submissive, unable to make decision for herself or assume responsibility but no clear cut personality disorder could be diagnosed. On physical examination, she was moderately built with no signs of malnourishment. Heart rate was 90 beats /min and BP-120/70 mm Hg. Systemic examination was unremarkable. She was well kempt and cooperative. Her speech and higher mental function was normal. There was evidence of mild depressive illness, without psychotic features or any other organic mental disorder. She had showed no distress over her belching despite having medical attention for symptoms which were not resolved. She did not show any concern about disruption in her daily activity but would be preoccupied with the other physical complaints like somatic pain and aches. AbSTRACT Conversion symptoms usually appear with emotional conflicts of the patient. Belching's psychogenic aetiology is not unheard of and can be a manifestation of conversion disorder though rare. Current case is of a middle aged woman presenting with belching unresponsive to medical management. The patient improved after supportive psychotherapy sessions and placebo medication.

In various studies the prevalence of co-morbid psychopathologies ranges from 15-70% including depression & anxiety disorders. Coping mechanisms of individual play vital role in case of developing alcohol dependence and various psychopathologies. A complex interaction of psychopathologies, coping skills, and alcohol use can influence the outcome of alcohol dependence. This study was undertaken with the aim of studying coping mechanism along with anxiety, depressive symptoms and their correlation in patients of alcohol dependence. Methods: This was a cross sectional study conducted in a tertiary government hospital. Institutional ethics committee approval obtained. 152 patients with the diagnosis of alcohol dependence (DSM IV TR) were screened for inclusion and exclusion criteria, out of which 60 patients were enrolled after taking written informed consent. Following scales were used for the study, mechanisms of coping scale (MOCS), Hamilton anxiety rating scale (HAM-A), Montgomery-Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS). Results: 32 patients had HAM-A score >17 suggestive of anxiety, similarly 40 patients had MADRS score >7 indicating depression. Problem focussed coping mechanism such as problem solving is associated with better outcome in terms of lesser anxiety and later age of first drink as well as developing dependence. Passivity, which is an emotion focussed coping mechanism, is associated with earlier first drink and higher depression score in patient suggesting poor outcome.

Aims: To assess the psychopathology and quality of life in parents of children with specific learning disability, and correlate the effects of socio-demographic factors. Methodology: 100 consecutive consenting parents of children with diagnosed specific learning disability were interviewed in learning disability clinic. A semi structured proforma, SCL 90 R scale and WHO QOL-BREF scale were used for assessment.Data obtained was analyzed using appropriate statistical tests. Results: The mean age of parents was 40.51±5.84 years. 41% of parents considered it to be a major problem. Obsessive compulsive, anger hostility & depression were the three subscales with highest mean distress index. 42 of 100 parents had general symptom index suggestive of significant psychopathology. Somatization was higher in mothers. Physical, psychological and environmental quality of life was better in higher educated parents. Physical, psychological and total quality of life has inverse correlation with psychopathology subscales and general symptom index. Conclusion: At least 2/5 th of parents have significant psychopathology in our sample.Mothers tend to manifest somatization more than fathers. Education, perception of problem and gender influence the quality of life in parents and some aspects of psychopathology. Quality of life deteriorates with worsening of psychopathology in parents.

The objective of this study was to study and compare psychopathology, quality of life and coping mechanism in psoriasis and neurodermatitis patients.
Methods: 30 cases each of psoriasis and neurodermatitis were assessed at dermatology out-patient department of a tertiary care hospital by using Symptom check list -90-Revised (SCL-90-R), dermatological life quality index (DLQI) and Brief cope scale (BCS).
Results: All Patients with neurodermatitis perceived it as a problem and in psoriasis it was 90%.The quality of life (QOL) was affected in both more in neurodermatitis as compared with psoriasis. Neurodermatitis showed significant psychopathology on SCL-90-Rin parameters of interpersonal sensitivity and Psychoticism. Depression, Anxiety, Somatisation, Obsessive-compulsiveness were seen in both groups. Self-blame, religion, positive-reframing were used commonly as coping mechanisms in neurodermatitis while in psoriasis there was acceptance, active coping, planning, and self-distraction, use of emotional and instrumental support, positive-reframing.
Conclusions: Quality of life is significantly lower in neurodermatitis. Psychopathologies were significantly high in neurodermatitis. Maladaptive coping styles were used in both groups.
The Present study uses the significant finding of frontal theta activity and emotional rejoinders... more The Present study uses the significant finding of frontal theta activity and emotional rejoinders through music listening on 41 subjects and derives a mathematical model. During the experiment, Electroencephalogram (EEG) activity recorded in different regions employing Indian instrumental classical music as a stimulus. The analysis of the data was performed for frontal theta power. The results confirm the hemispheric asymmetry of frontal theta power. Positively valence emotions (happy) elicited greater relative theta power in the left hemisphere, whereas negatively valence emotions (sad) elicited greater relative theta power in the right hemisphere. The study, correlate self-response of all 41 subjects with quantitative EEG to musical stimulus and proposes a system to estimate valence of emotion for musical stimulus.

This in turn, has differential impact on quality of life in men and women. This study aims at comparing the drinking pattern, psychiatric co morbidity and quality of life in men and women alcoholics and finding the correlations among them.
Materials and method: Subjects were assessed through a semi-structured proforma including alcohol related details, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for diagnosing mental disorders, 4th edition revised version (DSM IV TR) and WHO-Quality of life-BREF scale. Data was analyzed using chi-square and unpaired t test.
Results: Total duration of alcohol consumption after which medical help was sought was less in women (9.2 years) than men (19.66 years). Mean quantity of alcohol consumed was lower in women than men though prevalence of physical complication was equal in both. Among women with alcohol dependence, 68% were living alone and 58% had poor social support. Relief drinking was present in 80% of women whereas binging and blackouts were present in 84% and 98% of men respectively. Sexual disorders were common in women. 64% of women had good motivation for treatment compared to 46% of men. Depression was present in 52% of women. Social quality of life is affected much more in women than men.

Introduction and objectives: Though minimal quantitative data is available, the gender difference... more Introduction and objectives: Though minimal quantitative data is available, the gender differences in the pattern of drinking and the relationship of level of drinking and drink problems do exist.
