Research paper thumbnail of Deep learning neural network for the prediction of asian tiger stock markets

One of the challenges to using deep learning neural networks is to select the input variable. We propose to use multiple linear regression to select the input variable that is significant to the output. Besides, we construct a regional stock market index as a significant input to forecast the Asian Tiger stock markets. A comparison study on the forecasting model shows that the deep learning model can be used as a decision-making system that assists investors to predict short-term movement and trends of stock prices.

Research paper thumbnail of Market Manipulation in East-Asian Markets: A Regulatory Overview

Studies of Applied Economics

Keywords such as market manipulation, corporate fraud, market misconduct, financial regulations, corporate governance practices, institutional quality, and enforcement system for a search in the prominent academic literature databases are used. The studies related to the market misconduct and regulatory overview tied with these keywords are identified and selected for the systematic review. The review of extant literature suggests that the regulators are playing an important role in regulating the market to prevent market manipulation and market misconduct. The review also suggests that emerging economies are facing the issue of low institutional quality, absence of law enforcement agencies in the enforcement process, and definitional vagueness in relation to market manipulation. However, the findings suggest that enforcement mechanisms against market mani...

Research paper thumbnail of Energy–Finance–Growth Nexus in ASEAN-5 Countries: An ARDL Bounds Test Approach

Sustainability

This study examines the relationship between energy consumption, financial development and econom... more This study examines the relationship between energy consumption, financial development and economic growth for ASEAN-5 countries, namely Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, over the period from 1980 to 2017. Finance–growth and energy–growth relationships have been well researched; however, the energy–finance–growth nexus is an equally important but less explored area. Our Auto Regressive Distributed Lags (ARDL) bounds test for cointegration results suggests that the variables tend to move together in the long run for all countries, apart from Indonesia. Our study also considers the effect of a structural break due to financial crisis and confirms that the break does not affect the long-term relationship among the variables; in other words, the financial crisis does not affect the energy–finance–growth nexus. Hence, considering the consistency of energy consumption, the importance of the energy sector must not be undermined, and appropriate energy policies a...

Research paper thumbnail of Currency Order Flow and Exchange Rate Determination: Empirical Evidence from the Malaysian Foreign Exchange Market

Global Business Review

This article presents empirical test results of Malaysian foreign exchange market microstructure ... more This article presents empirical test results of Malaysian foreign exchange market microstructure assessment of exchange rate dynamics. We apply vector autoregressive (VAR) model to estimate the influential role of currency order flow in the determination of the currency exchange rate for the Malaysian ringgit (MYR) against the US dollar (USD). We investigate whether currency order flow captures the movements of exchange rate of MYR against USD, and how the long-term and short-term components impact the relative estimation of MYR in the international market. We, construct a measure of order flow in the Malaysian foreign exchange market to reflect the pressure of currency excess demand. Our focus is on the cumulative currency order flow and the exchange rate relationship of MYR and USD. A hybrid model of order flow and exchange rate dynamics proposed by Evans and Lyons (2002a) is applied to the Malaysian foreign exchange market (MYR/USD) to analyse a dataset of every 15-minute currenc...

The Singapore Economic Review

This study examines the impact of foreign aid on the institutional quality (IQ) of the OIC countr... more This study examines the impact of foreign aid on the institutional quality (IQ) of the OIC countries. Using the data of OIC countries for the three-year average period from 1991 to 2016, the system GMM finds that aid in general deteriorates the IQ for the aid recipient countries. However, quantile regression suggests that the negative impact of foreign aid on institutional quality (IQ) is relatively greater in the countries where the existing quality of institution is poor. The findings of the study suggest that improving the existing capacity is essential for reaping the optimum benefit of foreign aid on institutional development.

Drawing on data for 419 MFIs in 24 Latin America and the Caribbean countries between 2003 and 2014, we find that MFIs' managers with higher managerial ability outperform MFIs' managers with lower managerial ability. The study also finds that managers in Brazil (Trinidad and Tobago) have higher (lower) ability and are more (less) efficient. The findings help policymakers and regulators to propose with policy recommendations for long-term sustainability of MFIs by estimating and decomposing the ability of the managers.

Global Business Review

In this strand of research, gold has been particularly important due to its potential to mitigate risk and preserve wealth. This study investigates gold behaviour against equities and currencies in three regions across Asia. We follow Engle’s (2002) dynamic conditional correlation-multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (DCC-MGARCH) model to test the gold link with equity and currency markets. We use a weekly series of exchange rate (national currency/the US dollar), equity and gold prices in national currency over the weekly period, 1995–2013. The sample consists of 12 countries covering East Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Findings suggest that gold is just a diversifier against stocks in the Asian economies except in Korea, Singapore and Thailand. However, gold acts as a hedge and safe haven against...
