Research paper thumbnail of Evaluation of oxidative stress and antioxidant activity in pre and post hemodialysis in chronic renal failure patients from Western region of Nepal

Bangladesh Journal of Medical Science, 2013

Objective: To evaluate the oxidative stress and antioxidant activity in pre and post hemodialysis... more Objective: To evaluate the oxidative stress and antioxidant activity in pre and post hemodialysis in chronic renal failure patients using a diacetate cellulose membrane. Background: Chronic Renal Failure is a gradual, progressive and irreversible loss of normal functioning of kidneys. This is associated with increased formation of reactive oxygen species and increased oxidative stress. No studies have been undertaken in this area in Nepal. Method: The study groups were devided into chronic renal failure patients undergoing hemodialysis (n=52) and healthy controls (n=52). Diacetate cellulose was used as dialyzer membrane for chronic renal failure patients. Blood samples were collected in EDTAbottles and plasma was used for the estimation of oxidative stress marker, total antioxidant activity, vitamin C, ?-tocopherol, urea and creatinine. Results: There was significant reduction in the levels of vitamin C,? -tocopherol and total antioxidant activity in post dialysis patients compared ...

Study group had 38 children with sepsis (<5 yr) and 39 age-and sex-matched controls admitted to a tertiary care hospital. Red cell glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) and plasma vitamin C were estimated by standard techniques. There was no significant change in erythrocyte GSH, SOD and TBARS levels in sepsis when compared to controls. This may be due to the adaptive response of the body to combat the oxidative stress. However, plasma vitamin C levels were significantly reduced in patients aged one year one month to five years which may be due to active phagocytosis and due to its role as a free radical scavenger. Our findings show that children affected by sepsis probably adapt to the free radical toxicity induced by this condition. Further stu...
