The first studs have a shape characterized by three partially-overlapping frustoconical shapes, blended together to present an outline which does not retain dirt, in a triangular pattern, and produce a stud shorter than a second stud. The second studs have a shape characterized by a large frustoconical portion bounded by two partially-overlapping smaller frustoconical portions, of equal height, arranged to define a generally arcuate shape presenting a concave face and a convex face, the large frustoconical portion and the two small frustoconical portions being appropriately filleted to produce a smooth surface which does not retain dirt. These second studs may be oriented to support traction primarily in a predetermined direction, and to allow pivoting. The smaller studs may be orient...

Also, BCIs cannot work if the target signals have been eliminated due to injury. A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a system which can bypass the normal motor output through the spine by using bioelectrical signals recorded on the intact scalp during purely mental activity. Such a BCI must be able to classify EEG patterns on-line and can be used to control, e.g. the movement of a cursor on a monitor. Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is designed primarily for obtaining efficient method for decomposing a signal into a set of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a trend is roposed. Unlike the original empirical mode decomposition (EMD), which uses spline fits to extract variations from the signal by separating the local mean from the fluctuations in the decomposing process, this new method being proposed takes advantage of the theory of vari...

Automated visual inspection is becoming an important field of computer vision in many industries.... more Automated visual inspection is becoming an important field of computer vision in many industries. The real-time inspection of flat surface products is a task full of challenges in industrial aspects that requires fast and accurate algorithms for detection and localisation of defects. Structural, statistical and filter-based approaches, such as Gabor Filter Banks, Log-Gabor filter and Wavelets, have high computational complexity. This paper introduces a fast and accurate model for inspection and localization of industrial flat surface products: Neighborhood Preserving Perceptual Fidelity Aware Mean Squared Error (NP-PAMSE). The Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) is used for classification. ELM is found to be the perfect classifier for detecting defects. The proposed model resulted in defect detection accuracy of 99.86%, with 98.16% sensitivity, and 99.90% specificity. These results show that the proposed model outperforms many existing defect detection approaches. The discriminant power displays the efficiency of ELM in differentiation between normal and abnormal surfaces.

This paper presents a system for decision fusion in order to enhance the accuracy of defect detection in textiles. A multi-classifier decision fusion technique based on majority voting is presented to solve the problems of sensitivity to parameter variation and to make use of the advantages of the individual feature sets for accurate texture characterization. Features based on Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Laws Energy (LE) Filter, Local Binary Patterns (LBP), HU Moment invariants, Moment of Inertia (MOI) and Standard Deviation of Gray levels are used to train a set of Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ) classifiers. Detection accuracies of classifiers trained on single-feature sets are compared with those of the majority voting among the individual classifiers. The results obtained from majority voting indicate that the decision fusion technique improves the accuracy and r...

The proposed system used Local Binary Pattern with Variance histogram (LBPV) for extracting the preprocessed features. Canny edge detection and Hough Circular Transform (HCT) were used in the preprocessing stage while, the Combined Learning Vector Quantization classifier (CLVQ) was used for matching and classification. Reduced feature dimensions are obtained using LBPV histograms which are the input patterns for CLVQ producing the classes as its outputs. The fusion process was performed at the decision level based on majority voting algorithm of the output classes resulting from CLVQ classifier. The experimental results indicated that the fusion of face, iris, and fingerprint has achieved higher genuine acceptance recognition rate (GAR) 99.50% with mini...

The quality of homogeneous flat surface products, like paper sheets, steel slabs, textiles, and glasses, plays a crucial role in raising the profile of the manufacturing companies. This paper presents a new approach for defect detection using the Levene's test, which is used for testing the homogeneity of variances of samples drawn from the same population. It is assumed that the variances of samples taken from the same population are equal. Occurrence of defects results in a Levene's test measure that is higher than some critical value indicating that the null hypothesis of equal variances is rejected. Noise immunity of the proposed technique is ensured through pre-filtering the fabric image using the Wiener filter that is an edge preserving filter. The robustness to variations of the sliding window size and the structures of fabric is analyzed. The major advantages of the proposed technique are the low computational complexity and noise immunity while maintaining high accuracy.

This leads to less satisfied customers, waste of material, and bad company reputation. This research presents a novel application of image visual quality measures such as the multiscale structural similarity index (MS-SSIM). A novel algorithm has been implemented for fast detection and location of defects in many flat surface products. Comparison of the proposed algorithm with the state-of-the-art approaches indicate promising results. A defect detection accuracy of 99.1 % has been achieved with 98.62 % precision, 97.7 % recall/sensitivity, and 100 % specificity. The discriminant power shows how well the MS-SSIM discriminates very effectively between normal and abnormal surfaces. The MS-SSIM has resulted in much better performance than the single-scale SSI approach but at the cost of relatively lower processing speed. The major advantages of the presented approach are as follows: scale invariance, avoiding the problem of parameter selection in the case of the state-of-the-art Gabor filter banks based approach, the higher detection accuracy, and the quasi real-time processing speed.

The coefficient of variation is used as a homogeneity measure for approximate defect localization and features extracted from the Log - Gabor filter bank response are used to accurately localize and detect the defect while reducing the complexity of Gabor based inspection approaches. The scanning window size and threshold parameter are the two major factors that affect the system performance. An adaptive technique is proposed for selecting the size of the scanning window and automating the selection of the threshold level. Compared to the Log-Gabor filters, the proposed combination resulted in speeding up the defect detection process by about ten times. The experimental results show that the proposed system gives promising results and is applicable for defect detection in homogeneous surfaces like paper, steel plates, ceramic tiles and foils.

The two important features of Huffman coding are instantaneousness that is the codes can be interpreted as soon as they are received and variable length that is a most frequent symbol has length smaller than a less frequent symbol. The traditional Huffman coding has two procedures: constructing a tree in O(n^2) and then traversing it in O(n). Quantum computing is a promising approach of computation that is based on equations from Quantum Mechanics. Instantaneousness and variable length features are difficult to generalize to the quantum case. The quantum coding field is pioneered by Schumacher works on block coding scheme. To encode N signals sequentially, it requires O(N3) computational steps. The encoding and decoding processes are far from instantaneous. Moreover, the lengths of all the codewords are the same. With the increased usage of electronic kits in the educational laboratories, and the need for training a huge number of students on these kits, it is imperative to enable to remote access to a physical laboratory, either as part of an on-site or distance learning course. In addition to the convenience provided to students, there are also cost and safety related benefits. Many institutions can not afford the expensive equipment provided in a physical lab. Such laboratories are very convenient and effective for learning hardware design concepts and elaborating hardware-based graduation projects. This paper addresses the hardware (HW) and software (SW) tools necessary for building a general framework for remote laboratory access. The proposed system allows performing experiments remotely across the Internet via web interface as well as locally in the classroom. In addition, it introduces enhancements for the remote lab activities leading to improving its performance and makes the data transfer more secure.
