This article specifically discusses the manuscript and its possible author, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa’s clerk Rodevico; it describes how Silves was used and ignored in both Christian and Muslim histories.
The manuscript De Itinere Navali (About the Voyage) is the only known eyewitness account of the attack on Xelb (Silves) in which King Sancho I of Portugal and his land army joined forces with an extemporized fleet of German, English and Flemish Crusaders to besiege this important and wealthy city, wresting it from the Moroccan Muslim (Almohad) Empire in 1189AD (585AH).

In 1481, William Caxton produced a Middle English translation of this text, dedicated to the King of England, which he named "A Boke Intituled Eracles, or Godeffroy of Boloyne".
This two-volume set is the first treatment of Caxton’s work in over a century. It is the first ever modern English translation of the work, providing an easily accessible translation combined with contextual and critical information. It examines two aspects of the Eracles chronicle. First, the book illuminates the history of the text by referring to the Latin and French ancestors of Caxton’s Eracles, as well as investigating Caxton’s methods, abilities and motivations. Previous treatments of the chronicle are examined, correcting discrepancies and providing alternative interpretations. Second, the book investigates the history in the text by using the latest research to further contextualize and clarify the military events described. The author has developed a striking new concept of understanding the interpersonal relationships between the Crusaders, allowing the reader to perceive the inner workings of the Crusade itself.

Although the Crusaders took much of their traditional concepts of society with them, the geographical distance and unique circumstances separating them from their homelands created the opportunity for and indeed necessitated an adaptation of these traditional models for facilitating and cementing interpersonal relationships – a circle of acquaintances of greater or lesser degrees of influence, which circle has been described as a mouvance.
The mouvance is first applied to Crusader history in John France’s Victory in the East: A Military History of the First Crusade and France’s recent survey text, Western Warfare in the Age of the Crusades, 1000 - 1300; I propose that it is helpful to use another concept, degrees of separation, to assist in the analysis and amplify our understanding of the mouvance."

A popular history of the German Crusaders' ships and their work. A case study of a siege in 1189 AD / 585 AH at wealthy and strategic city of Silves (Portugal) in the Muwahid (Almohad) Empire. How good treatment of refugees, and the information they gave in return, defeated the city more quickly than military attacks despite the Emperor's demand to fight to the death for Allah.

It was not only the basic unit of feudal society, but it was also the individual's chief means of obtaining land and exercising military power. While a significant amount of work is extant regarding the domains and campaigns of specific families, very little has been done to investigate the role of the family or heritage within a greater social context, such as a Crusade. Today I shall be speaking from the perspective of a military historian exploring the nascent European and Eastern Latin nobility in the era of the early Crusades. I hope to untangle some of the genealogical branches that one will encounter in studying the military leaders of the First through Third Crusades, for clearly the noble Crusaders do not magically appear in situ as the chronicles might lead one to expect. As well as I might, since some sources conflict, it is my intention to show how the ruling families of Europe descended and expanded from tenth-century Europe into the thirteenth-century Latin East. My intention is to provide, through genealogy, a path that will put the key players into the places and events described by the chroniclers.

In my studies of the Third Crusade there has been the occasional but recurring mention of an English princess, whose name is given variously as Giovanna della Inglese, Jehanne, or Joanna Plantagenet. Although her life became inextricably bound with the significant people and events of her era, she remains a shadowy figure who seems to pass through the chronicles without much further notice. As this conference presented the opportunity to speak of women in the medieval world, particularly the Norman world, I decided to set aside my usual books on war and take up the campaign to give light and life to this little-known Queen of Sicily.

Just as the government of the city and the country alternated between promoting peace dividends and planning civil defense, Torontonians alternated between apathy and anger as fifth-column scandals and strategic nuclear initiatives affected everything from the newspapers to the new architecture of the city.
This multidisciplinary study examines the first 20 years of Cold War history when Toronto the Great was at the center of the brave new nuclear world... when everyone in town knew (and sometimes openly admitted) that they faced an actual nuclear megadeath under the defense-in-depth system designed for NORAD... yet the world flocked to the continent's fastest-growing city of Toronto for a chance to influence the changing mental and physical landscapes of the nuclear mid-century both overtly and covertly, both in the jet-fighters above and in the subways beneath, becoming famous for Canadian peacekeeping while maintaining the city's freedom from any nuclear weapons limits.
The author is a born Torontonian trained in American espionage, and she interprets the conference theme of "soldiers and civilians in the cauldron of war" by examining and interpreting the history of her hometown for both American and Canadian audiences. This is a preliminary study intended to become a book-length examination of Toronto for the general public.

The year 1216 marks a key point in the transformation of Denmark from its origins as a Scandinavian domain into a nation, a waxing global military power possessing and projecting the foremost medieval maritime technology into the Baltic Sea. This paper investigates the flow of ideas about technology and culture, combined with religious, economic and political events from the Atlantic coasts, around the Kattegat Straits and the Cimbrian Peninsula, and into the Baltic Sea as the Danes battled the pagan Slavs (Wends) to secure their land and transform their sea. This paper provides an overview of the dynamic early centuries in Baltic crusading as the Danes developed their society while building and projecting their sea-power, militarily moving from a defensive posture to an offensive crusading-colonizing stance as medieval shipbuilding technology (cog / kogge) combined with Denmark's unique geographical position to create culture, economic developments, and theopolitical powers which manifested as crusades and colonization in Estonia.

Very early in the First Crusade, notes Bernard Bachrach, it became clear to the Crusaders that, "The attractiveness of a strategy of conquest based on a seaborne operation [was] obvious from a logistical perspective." 1 Moreover, it was "...evident that any long-term Western presence [in Outremer] would require... an effective projection of naval power into the area," as Dotson points out. 2 Whereas the Roman Vegetius wrote of mangonels and catapults mounted aboard ships but used only in the context of sea-to-sea battle -for example, one ship launching fire-darts at an enemy ship 3 -yet the Crusaders transformed this power for sea-to-land operations. To place this technology into its sociohistorical context, the Crusaders projected more than just engine-power from their ships at sea: John France approached the following point, 4 so I want to restate and emphasize it nowships are so much more than a projection of naval military power! The Crusader ship was not just a floating warehouse of people and chattel -it was a mobile microcosm.

One neglected area of maritime history and of the Crusades was the twelfth-century struggle for control in the Atlantic.
Wrote John France: “The problem was political, for at the time... [Andalusia was] in Muslim hands, making the journey very hazardous in a period when all shipping clung to the land.” To this end, the Crusaders clearly employed a strategy of wresting control of key river-mouth ports by attacking along the coasts of four maritime frontiers (Atlantic Iberia, Mediterranean Iberia, Sicily/North Africa, and Cyprus/Jerusalem). Among these four contemporary maritime frontiers, this article focuses on the Crusaders fighting to take Atlantic Iberia (Andalusia) from the Almohad (Muwahid) Empire of Morocco in order to secure passage via Straits of Gibraltar and the survival of the Crusaders’ “Outremer” in Jerusalem.
My paper today seeks to integrate sources from across time, cultures, and disciplines to achieve ... more My paper today seeks to integrate sources from across time, cultures, and disciplines to achieve a better understanding of the Crusades, and to change our focus from land to sea. These regions were called Outre-Mer – not Outre-Terre – for the simple reason that one could only get there by sea. Therefore, as John Pryor wrote recently, Crusader history needs to be told from “… the gaze of a seaman… from the masthead of a ship.” Both Crusaders and their opponents had significant ocean coastlines: Control of this coast, especially at river-mouths, was key to control of the interior lands, not merely for administration or defense, but for consumable-goods trade that was both necessary and very valuable. Thus we must study the maritime history of the 12th-century Crusades… in the ATLANTIC!
While examining the Atlantic-Andalusian Crusades of the 12th century, today I want to address SEV... more While examining the Atlantic-Andalusian Crusades of the 12th century, today I want to address SEVEN myths within medieval history that can be disproven by evidence from that conflict:
1. Pirenne’s theory of a land-based, N/S axis for medieval trade after the rise of Islam, was incorrect.
2. That you cannot sail West through the Straits of Gibraltar
3. That Muslims of any stripe rarely sailed or had any nautical leanings whatsoever.
4. The pop-culture perception of Crusaders as a bunch of brave and righteous and slightly bloodthirsty souls sailing off the map where “here be dragons”
5. The Crusaders mostly taxied through the Atlantic. The real naval action was in the Mediterranean.
6. “personalities”-- We need to recognize this bias and consciously shift away from personalities (kings, popes) much as military historians recognized their ‘battle’ bias and consciously shifted away it.
7. "eurocentrism" -- We need to shift away from European languages and sources in order to understand accurately the Crusades.
These myths we must overcome if we are to develop a more accurate understanding of maritime and Crusades histories generally.

This paper argues that the fall of Silves was not only a target of the Portuguese realm for its wealth and harbor, but also that the city's defense effort was severely weakened by the conflict of civil (caid), religious (qada), and military (sayyid) leadership in the town competing for authority when the Crusaders laid siege.

This link is the 2006 version presented to the MMLA. The key to eradicating the symptoms of extremism and of terrorism, and to resolving the underlying causes of these irrational philosophies, is threefold: To understand what has occurred historically in societies from both Islamic and Christian perspectives; to discover the motives and results of contact and conflict within and between them both; and thereby to trace the relevant contentions to the present situation, so to eradicate terrorism. How is an examination of the Crusades relevant to this hypothesis?

Although her life became inextricably bound with the significant people and events of her era, she remains a shadowy figure who seems to pass through the chronicles without much further notice. As this conference presented the opportunity to speak of women in the medieval world, particularly the Norman world, I decided to set aside my usual books on war and take up the campaign to give light and life to this little-known Queen of Sicily.

As a combat-disabled veteran and scholar of medieval military history, I possess both personal experience and professional interest in this material, and learned important new facts and approaches from the ten different perspectives of the contributing authors. The medieval experiences, attitudes, and concerns studied in this volume were and are truly fundamental yet extremely dynamic in our lives today. This book is a timely and relevant contribution to medieval studies. (April 2017)
