George A. Romano's Land of the Dead
my brother and i love the zombies, so we went to see this one together, and both of us wanted to leave after twenty minutes. the opening scene with zombies attempting to imitate their old lives was quite laughable, and i can't imagine that it was meant to be otherwise! the main zombie is, after all, named "big daddy." and with zombies that learn to communicate, use crude tools and weapons, and march en masse to begin a war on the living? no thanks! i like my zombies stupid and, preferrably, speedy (ie. 28 days later, dawn of the dead 2004-style, and this year's alias season finale!).
it is interesting as social commentary, which i will give old george for all of his zombie movies. if zombies were a threat in this world, i mean really, it would totally happen this way. the rich would create a fortress of safety for them to continue living out their meaningless, consumer-driven lives and think as little as possible about the world going to hell in a handbasket outside their little bubble, and the people outside that high society circle would have to deal with it on a daily basis and become the living army to protect the rich. come to think of it, it doesn't sound that far off from our current reality! (i mean, zombies aside and all.)
i don't think there was a soul in the audience that didn't silently cheer for john leguizombie when he finally got to stick it to The Man (dennis hopper). but we didn't cheer out loud, because overall, the movie sucked. and we all knew it.
