Simultaneously we have studied two-photon absorption for the nanosecond 1064nm Nd:YAG laser fundamental wavelength. The studies were performed during several cycles of applied uniaxial pressure. ABSTRACT Photo-induced treatment of L-alanine single crystals grown by slow evaporation method at... more ABSTRACT Photo-induced treatment of L-alanine single crystals grown by slow evaporation method at an ambient temperature was performed using a 25 ps Nd:YAG pulsed laser in the presence of an external acoustic filed. The changes of the absorption were studied for the wavelength 265 nm near the energy band gap edge at acoustical power density varying within 4–6 W/cm 2 . The observed absorp-tion changes indicate that the external optical electric field strengths and acoustical power densities may be efficient parameters for the characterization of photo-optical and acousto-optical treatment of the samples. From the X-ray diffraction data we have optimized the atomic positions assuming that force on the atoms is around 1 mRy/au. These are used to calculate the electronic structure and the chemical bonding for the amino acid L-alanine single crystals. The calculated electronic band structure and densities of states confirms the experimental results that this compound possesses a relatively large energy band gap. The upper valence band has its maximum at the Z point of the Brillouin zone while the conduction band minimum is located at C point in the zone center, resulting in an indirect energy band gap. The electronic energy gap is equal to 4.19 eV within a framework of the used local density approximation and 4.54 eV with the Engel–Vosko generalized gradient approximation as the exchange correlation potential. This is in an agreement with our experimentally measured energy band gap *4.67 eV. The existence of O-p character in the upper valence band has a significant consequence for the optical band gap. From our calculated electron charge density distribution, we obtain a space electron charge density distribution in the average unit cell of the crystal. The chemical bonding features of L-alanine amino acid were analyzed.

ABSTRACT Changes in the velocity and attenuation coefficient of quasi-longitudinal waves propagat... more ABSTRACT Changes in the velocity and attenuation coefficient of quasi-longitudinal waves propagating in TGSe crystal in the direction X induced by uniaxial stress σY were measured in the temperature range of ferroelectric phase transition. The application of uniaxial stress was found to shift the phase transition temperature by ∂TC/∂σY = −0.18 K/MPa. For the stress greater than 2 MPa an additional anomaly in the wave velocity and attenuation appears, which has been interpreted as a splitting of the phase transition.

High resolution Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to study the elastic properties of K2ZnCl4 c... more High resolution Brillouin spectroscopy has been used to study the elastic properties of K2ZnCl4 crystal in the temperature range from 100 to 300 K in order to establish the temperature behaviour of elastic stiness tensor components. Ten Brillouin modes have been observed for the phonons propagating in the six directions. All phonon velocities reveal dierent anomalies at the phase transition (T0 = 144.7 K). The obtained results allowed a calculation of the temperature dependence of elastic constants of the prototype phase. A comparison of the presented results with the earlier low-frequency data indicates a strong relaxational character of the order parameter in K2ZnCl4 and the anomalous dispersion behaviour of quasilongitudinal and quasitransverse phonons propagating along the [110] direction.

A correlation between changes in the elastic properties and anomalies in the spontaneous polarization of the crystals at 170 K is found. No anomaly in the piezoelectric properties in the vicinity of the newly postulated phase transition at 250 K has been detected.

ABSTRACT Changes in the velocity and attenuation coefficient of quasilongitudinal waves propagati... more ABSTRACT Changes in the velocity and attenuation coefficient of quasilongitudinal waves propagating in a TGSe crystal in the directions z' = z-4° and x, induced by uniaxial stress σx and σy, were measured in the temperature range of the ferroelectric phase transition. The uniaxial stress applied was found to shift the phase transition temperature by ∂TC/∂σx = -0.074 and ∂TC/∂σy = -0.18 K MPa-1. Other effects appearing under the influence of external stress, such as a change in the jump of the wave velocity at the phase transition, increase in the attenuation coefficient and broadening of the phase transition range, are discussed on the basis of the phenomenological theory. The relaxation time of the order parameter fluctuations was determined. For stress exceeding 2 MPa an additional anomaly in the wave velocity and attenuation appeared, which was interpreted as a splitting of the phase transition. The nonlinear elastic effects at the phase transition, in the para- and ferroelectric phases, are also discussed.

No significant elastic softening was observed in the course of our studies. In a few cases an anomalous increase of V R at T C was observed. The observed behavior may be attributed to the properties of the surface layer, which in the case Brillouin scattering experiment, is penetrated to about 300 nm from the surface.
